- the splined shaft 42 is loosely mounted within the hub of the bevel gear 41 so as to be vertically movable therein and so as to have limited axial movement with respect thereto.
- the splined shaft 42 is held within the hub of the bevel gear 41 by means of a cap piece 43 which engages a shoulder 44 on the inner portion of the hub of the bevel gear 41.
- the cap piece 43 may be held on the top portion of the splined shaft 42 by any suitable means,
- said means herein being preferably shown as a machine screw 45.
- a sleeve 46 is journaled within the cutter bar supporting member 33 and is driven by the lower portion of the splined shaft 42.
- An annular ring 42 is fixed within the sleeve 46 and is adapted to abut the lower end of the splined shaft 42 and move said shaft vertically upon vertical movement of said sleeve.
- the splined shaft 42 is likewise loosely mounted within the sleeve 46 so as to be vertically movable therewith or allow said sleeve to be vertically movable with respect thereto and have a limited axial movement with respect thereto to provide for vertical adjustment of the cutter head 18 with respect to the cutter frame 17 and to provide a flexible driving connection between the bevel gear 41 and sleeve 46 to allow for limited transverse movement of the cutter head 18 with respect to the cutter frame 17 as the cutter bar 20 is sumped into the coal.
- a sprocket 47 is keyed on the lower end of the sleeve 46 and meshes with and drives the cutter chain 21.
- a thrust member 48 is fixed on the top portion of the sleeve 46 by any suitable means well known to the art to hold said sleeve within the cutter bar supporting member 33. It may be seen in looking at Figure 3 that since the splined shaft 42 is movable in both the hub of the bevel gear 41 and sleeve 46 that the top portion of the splined shaft 42 is beneath the top portion of the motor 16 when the cutter bar 20 is in its uppermost cutting position thus providing a drive for the cutter chain 21 which insures a maximum of vertical adjustment of the cutter bar 20 and takes up a minimum of vertical height.
- an adjusting screw 50 is provided to support the forward end of the supporting member 25 and vertically move said supporting member along the guides 19.
- the adjusting screw 56 is attached to the supporting member 25 at its lower end by means of a pin 51 which is fixed to said supporting member and which passes through an eye piece 52 integral with said adjusting screw.
- the adjusting screw 50 is threaded for its entire length and is engaged by a threaded inner portion 53 of a threaded sleeve 55. See Figures 2 and 3.
- the threaded sleeve 55 is in turn threaded within a hub 56 of a worm gear 57.

Chicago, Ill., assigncr to Goodman Manufacturing Company, Chicago, 211., a corporation of Illinois Application ()ctcber 25, 3.929, Serial No. 402,505 Eenewed July 30, 1932 28 Claims;
This invention relates to improvements in miningmachines and has among other objects to provide a mining machine of the mounted type especially designed for operation in. thin seams of coal for cutting a keri in the mine wall along the mine bottom or at various elevations with respect thereto.
A prior application, Serial Number 157,005 filed December 25, 1926, shows a mining machine of the the mine bottom or atvarious elevations with respect thereto. The machine of my present invention while somewhat similar in construction to that ofmy prior invention is an improvement 'on'my prior invention in that the parts are so arrangedthat a greater range of vertical adjustment of the cutter bar may beobtained in a machine of less vertical dimensions so it may operate in relatively low coal seams. 7
Other objects of my invention will appear from time to time this specification proceeds.
My invention'may be more readily understood with reference to the accompanying drawings,
wherein:
Figure 1, is a top plan view of the device embodying my invention with parts broken away and in section to more clearly show the details thereof; 7
Figure 2 is an enlarged partial longitudinal fragmentary sectional view of the device shown in Figure 1; and
Figure is an enlarged partial o longitudinal fragmentary sectional view of the device shown in Figure 1 with the cutter bar in a different position than is shown in Figure 2. 1 Like numerals refer to like parts throughout the various figures. I,
Referring now in particular to the drawings, the device embodying my invention. includes a truck 1-0 mounted on truck wheels ll and axles 12. A turntable l3 mounted on the truck 10 and rotated by means of a motor 14 on the truck 10 through a suitable s 'stem of gearing of an ordinary type not herein described nor shown in detail since it is no part of my invention. Cutting mechanism generally indicated at 15 is trunnioned on the turntable 13 on a transverse axis near the forward end thereof and is yieldably supported at'its rearward end on said. turntable 'foradjusting. the angle of said cuttingmechanism" with respect to the mine bottom.
The cutting mechanism 15 includes a motor 16 which is herein preferably shown as an electric -motor having a cutter frame 1'? extending forwardly therefrom and projecting beyond. the
track mounted type adapted to out a kerf along boundaries of the truck 10. A cutter head 18 is suspended beneath the cutter frame 17 and is movable vertically'with respect thereto in guides '19, 19. A cutter bar 20 projects forwardly from the cutter head 18 and has a cutter chain 21 movablethereabout, which cutter chain is driven by the motor 16.
The cutter head 18 includes a supporting memoer h ving relatively widely spaced vertically extending portions 26 which engage the guides 19, 19 and are sliclably movable therealong.
he vertically extending portions 26 of the supporting member 25 have recesses 28 on the rearward side thereof which have bearing contact on forward and side surfaces of the guides 19, i9. Retaining strips 27, 27 abut the rearward sides of the vertically extending portions 26, 26 of the supporting member 25 and the guides 19 are fixed to said vertically extending portions in a suitable manner; as, for .29. Thus the vertically extending portions 26 of the supporting member 25 and the retaining strips 27 have bearing contact with the guides 19 to support the supporting member 25 for slidable movement along the guides 19 towards and away from the cutter frame 17.
A cutter bar supporting member 33 is vjournaled within the supporting member 25 for rotatable movement with respect thereto and depends from said supporting member and projects outwardly beyond the boundaries thereof. A retaining ring 35 is attached to the top outer portion of the cutter bar supporting member 33 by means of cap screws 36 and abuts a shoulder 34 of thesupporting member 25 to hold the cutter bar supporting member 33 from vertical movement with respect thereto so said cutter bar supporting member may rotate about the supporting member 25. Suitable locking means (not shown) are provided to permit adjustment of the cutter bar v20 about its axis of pivotal connection to the supporting member 25 and hold said cuter bar supporting member 33 in a stationary position'with respect to the supporting member 25 when themachine is cutting a kerf in the mine wall. The cutter bar 2o supported on the cutter bar supporting member 33 in a usual manner not herein shown since it is no part of my invention.
The cutter chain 21 is driven from the motor 16 through a suitable geared reduction drive which includes a motor pinion 37 which meshes with a spur gear 38 keyed on the rearward end of a longitudinal shaft 39. A bevel pinion 40 is keyed on-the forward end of the longitudinal shaft 39 instance, cap screws and meshes with and drives a bevel gear 41 journaled on the outer portion of its hub within the cutter frame 17. A vertical splined shaft 42 is engaged by the inner portion of the hub of the bevel gear 41 and is driven thereby. The splined shaft 42 is loosely mounted within the hub of the bevel gear 41 so as to be vertically movable therein and so as to have limited axial movement with respect thereto. The splined shaft 42 is held within the hub of the bevel gear 41 by means of a cap piece 43 which engages a shoulder 44 on the inner portion of the hub of the bevel gear 41. The cap piece 43 may be held on the top portion of the splined shaft 42 by any suitable means,
said means herein being preferably shown as a machine screw 45.
A sleeve 46 is journaled within the cutter bar supporting member 33 and is driven by the lower portion of the splined shaft 42. An annular ring 42 is fixed within the sleeve 46 and is adapted to abut the lower end of the splined shaft 42 and move said shaft vertically upon vertical movement of said sleeve. The splined shaft 42 is likewise loosely mounted within the sleeve 46 so as to be vertically movable therewith or allow said sleeve to be vertically movable with respect thereto and have a limited axial movement with respect thereto to provide for vertical adjustment of the cutter head 18 with respect to the cutter frame 17 and to provide a flexible driving connection between the bevel gear 41 and sleeve 46 to allow for limited transverse movement of the cutter head 18 with respect to the cutter frame 17 as the cutter bar 20 is sumped into the coal. A sprocket 47 is keyed on the lower end of the sleeve 46 and meshes with and drives the cutter chain 21. A thrust member 48 is fixed on the top portion of the sleeve 46 by any suitable means well known to the art to hold said sleeve within the cutter bar supporting member 33.
Referring now in particular toanother of the novel features of my invention which includes a means for moving the cutter head 18 towards and away from the cutter frame 17, an adjusting screw 50 is provided to support the forward end of the supporting member 25 and vertically move said supporting member along the guides 19. The adjusting screw 56 is attached to the supporting member 25 at its lower end by means of a pin 51 which is fixed to said supporting member and which passes through an eye piece 52 integral with said adjusting screw. The adjusting screw 50 is threaded for its entire length and is engaged by a threaded inner portion 53 of a threaded sleeve 55. See Figures 2 and 3. The threaded sleeve 55 is in turn threaded within a hub 56 of a worm gear 57. The worm gear 57 is journaled on the outer periphery of its hub within the cutter frame 17 and is driven by a worm 58 on the forward end of a longitudinal shaft 59. See Figure 1. A spur gear 60 is fixed on the rearward end of the longitudinal shaft 59 and meshes with an idler gear 61. The idler gear 61 is in turn driven by a spur gear 62 on a sleeve 63 freely mounted on the longitudinal shaft 39. The sleeve 63 is selectively connectible with the longitudinal shaft 39 by suitable clutch means which may be of any type well known to the art but which herein comprises a cone clutch 64 of an ordinary construction. The cone clutch 64 comprises a member 65 feathered on the longitudinal shaft 39 having a face 66 thereon in the form of a frustum of a cone. The face 66 is engageable with a corresponding face 67 on the inner periphery of a clutch member 68 integral with the sleeve 63. The member 65 is movable along the longitudinal shaft 39 to drive the worm gear 5'7 from the motor 16 and thus move the cutter head 18 with respect to the cutter frame 17 by suitable means not herein shown since it is no part of my invention.
A collar 70 is fixed to the lower portion of the threaded sleeve 55 to stop vertical movement of said sleeve through the worm gear 57 when said collar abuts the hub of said worm gear. Thus when the cutter bar 20 is adjacent the mine bottom, as is shown in Figure 1, rotation of the worm gear 57 will move the threaded sleeve 55 upwardly through said worm gear, said threaded sleeve being held from rotation by the reaction of the adjusting screw 50, support frame 25, cutter bar supporting means 33, and cutter bar 20 thereon. When the collar 70 abuts the hub 56 of the worm gear 57, vertical movement of the threaded sleeve 55 will be stopped and said 165 threaded sleeve will rotate with the worm gear 57 thus moving the adjusting screw 50 vertically through the threaded sleeve 55 as is illustrated in Figure 3, which adjusting screw is beneath the top portion of the motor 16 when the cutter bar'20 is in its uppermost cutting position.
It may thus be seen that I have provided a mining machine of the track mounted type adapted to out a kerf along the mine bottom or at various elevations with respect thereto which is provided with means for moving the cutter bar 20 towards and away from the cutter frame 17, which means is of a double telescopic construction so as to be beneath the top portion of the motor 16 when the cutter bar 20 is in its 20 uppermost vertical cutting position and which thus requires a minimum of head room or vertical height. Furthermore, the cutter chain 21 may be driven by the mining machine motor 16 in all positions of adjustment of the cutter 5 bar 20 with respect to the cutter frame 1''! and said driving means is so arranged as to take up a minimum of vertical height and not project above the top of the motor 16 when said cutter bar is in its uppermost vertical cutting 30 position, thus providing a maximum of adjustment for the cutter bar 20 which requires a minimum of vertical height.
Although I' have herein shown and described one form in which my invention may be embodied, it will be understood that the construction thereof and arrangement of the various parts may be altered without departing from the spirit and scope thereof. Furthermore, I do not wish to be construed as limiting myself to the specific embodiment illustrated in the drawings, excepting as it may be limited by the appended claims.
