Description
Nov. 28, 1933. F. w. RETTENMEYER BOTTLE LOCK Filed Jan. 1933 Patented No 28, 1933 PATENT OFFICE v BOTTLE LOCK Frederick W. Rettcnmeyer, Mcriden, Conn., as!
signor to The Napier Company,
Conn., a corporation Meriden,
Application January 3, 1933. Serial No. 649,903
3 Claims.
This invention relates to an improvement in bottle locks,t hat is, devices adapted to be applied to the neck of a bottle to prevent surreptitious access to the contents, the object being to provide a device readily applied and capable of fitting various sizes and shapes of bottles, and which will be attractive in appearance.
The invention consists in the construction as hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing:
Fig. 1 is a sectional view illustrating one form of my improved bottle lock;
Fig. 2 isa sectional view on the line 2--2 of Fi 1;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the bottle-collar detached;
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the cap detached;
Fig. 5 is a broken sectional view illustrating a modified form of eye for a padlock;
Fig.6 is a broken perspective view illustrating a modified form of collar; and
Fig. '7 is a broken perspective view showing a modified form of cap to be used therewith.
In carrying out my invention, I employ a collar 10 formed from metal, and in this collar is a plurality of openings 11 for. the reception of screws 12, whereby the device may be coupled with the neck 13 of a bottle, either in agroove 14 or beneath a rib 15. This collar has a horizontal flange 16 and the edge 17 is turned upward and formed on one side with a slot 18 and on the opposite side, the flange 16 is formed with an opening 19.
The cap 20 may be of any approveddesign and is of cup shape. The rim 21 of the cap has an eye 22 secured to it and extending beyond the rim, and opposite the eye, the rim of the cap is provided with a lug 23 adapted to enter the slot 18.
Before or after the cork has been removed, the collar is connected with the neck of the bottle by means of the screws 12, the diameter of the collar being such as to be adapted for various sizes of bottles.
After the collar is located in position, the cap 20 is placed by first inserting the lug 23 through the slot 18 and then turning the cap downward so that the eye 22 passes through .the opening 19, and a padlock 24 is then engaged with the eye 22 so that the cap cannot be removed without opening the padlock.
Instead of forming the eye 22 from flat wire, as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 4 of the drawing, it may be formed from a single piece of sheet metal 25, as shown in Fig. 5 of the drawing, this piece being secured to the rim of the cap by forming it with integral rivets 26, and instead of providing the cap with the lug 23 and the edge of the collar with a slot 18, the edge of the collar may be turned inward at one point to form a lug 27 and the edge of the cap in line therewith formed with a slot 28 to receive the lug, as alsoshown in Figs. 5, 6 and 'I of the drawing.
In either case, a lock is provided fora bottle,
which is readily applied and when applied, se-
curely protects the contents of the bottle against surreptitious removal, and the device is readily removed from one bottle and applied to another bottle when desired.
I claim:
1. A bottle lock comprising a collar, a plurality of screws mounted in said collar and adapted to engage with the neck of a bottle, said collar also formed with a flange having an upturned edge, said flange formed on one side with an opening, a cap adapted to be seated inside of said flange and provided-on one side with an eye extending through the opening in the flange, the diametrically opposite sides of the cap and collar provided one with a slot and the other with a lug to enter the slot, and a lock applied to said eye.
2. A bottle lock comprising a collar, a plurality of screws mounted in said collar and adapted to engage with the neck of a bottle, said collar also formed with a flange having an upturned edge, said flange formed on one side with an opening, a cap adapted to be seated inside of said flange and provided on one. side with an eye extending through the opening in the flange, the diametrically-opposite side of the flange formed with a 7 slot, the corresponding side of the cap formed 90 with a lug adapted to engage said slot, and a lock applied to said eye. v
3. A bottle lock comprising a collar. adapted to be engaged with the neck of a bottle, said collar formed with a flange having, an upturned edge, said flange formed on one side with an opening, a cap adapted to be seated inside of said flange and provided on one side with an eye extending through the opening in the flange, the diametrically-opposite sides of the cap and collar provided one with a slot and the other with a lug to enter the slot, and a lock applied to said eye.
FREDERICK W. RETTENlWEYER.
