COUNTER Filed May 7. 1931 3'Sheats-Sheet 3 fruit being carried through the channel 17 by the moving belt 13. When the fruit engages the roller it lifts the trigger and the fruit passes underenath.
An actuating device comprises an adjustable arm 36 mounted on a bolt 37, such bolt passing through a bracket 38 on the end 29 of the trigger. This arm is held in place by a resilient pressure using a spring 39 coiled on the bolt and bearing against a washer, which latter presses against the arm 36. This arm 36 has a finger 40 at its upper end and such finger fits in the yoke end 41 of a bell crank 42, this bell crank being pivoted on the top of the stud 43 extending upwardly from the bracket 25. The opposite end 44 of the bell crank has a clamping block 45 connected thereto by a pivot 46, there being a series of holes to adjust the position of the pivot, and this block has a perforation therethrough, through which extends an actuating link 47, the link being adjustably connected in the block 45 by such block having a set screw 48 to clampthe link.
The mounting for the enumerators utilizes a channel-shaped bar 49 which is attached to the outer end of the beams 22, there being one for each enumerating trigger. This bar has a sloping plate 50 at its outer end on which is mounted an upper and a lower enumerator 51 and 52. These enumerators are of standard construction each having an actuating arm 53 and 54 connected thereto, the oscillation of such arm through a definite are causing the enumerator to be operated. Each complete oscillation of the arc operates the enumerator one unit.
Our shifting construction employs a link 55 which has its lower end 56 pivotally connected to the outer end of the arm 54 of the lower enumerator and has a sliding pivot connection 5'? with the lower end of the upper arm 53, the link having a longitudinal slot 58 to allow free sliding of the pivot 57. The long link 47 extending from the trigger has a swivel attachment at 59 to the link 55.
The remote control mechanism at will shifting from an upper to a lower enumerator and vice versa comprises a longitudinal control shaft 60. This shaft is journaled at 61 in all of the bars 49 adjacent the sloping face plate 50 and extends from one end of the machine to the other across all of the bins to all of the enumerators. Fixedly secured to the shaft for each of the enumerators there is a clamping hub 62, this hub being attached to the shaft by set screws 63. The hub has a fiat spring 64, which spring fits in a slot 65 in a cylindrical lug 66 on a lower end 67 of a bell crank 68. This bell crank has a hub 69 freely rotatable on the shaft 60. The upper arm '70 of the bell crank has a cylindrical lug 71 at its extremity. The lug 71 is positioned to contact with the arm 53 of the upper counter, and the lug 66 of the lower arm of the bell crank to engage the arm 54 of the lower counter 52. It will thus be apparent, as
- illustrated in Figs. 2 and 5 in full lines, that when the upper lug engages the upper arm of the enumerator such enumerator cannot be operated but the lower lug 66 is retracted and the arm 54 of the lower enumerator may be oscillated. Hence, as the trigger operates, reciprocating the link 47, the link 55 swings on the pivot 5'7 and. the arm 54 is oscillated.
When the shaft 60 is oscillated a predetermined amount the lug 66 is advanced to engage the arm 54 into the dotted line position of Fig. 5 and the lug '71 is retracted. This allows an oscillating movement for the arm 53 of the upper enumerator. The link 55 moved by the reciprocating motion of the link 47 then oscillates on the pivot 56.
In order to form stops for the motion of the bell crank there are stop lugs 72 and 73 formed on the inclined plate 50. However, these are not, in reality, necessary, as it is usual to provide a fixed arc of oscillation of the shaft 60; and the means for oscillating this shaft comprises a resilient arm '74 which is secured by a hub 75 to one end of the shaft 60. This arm operates on a face '76 on a fixed bracket 77, such bracket being attached to one of the beams 22. The face '76 has notches '78 which form a limit to the movement of the lever, the swing of the lever being sufiicient to shift the bell crank from one position to another to stop one enumerator and allow operation of the other.
Various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
We claim:
l. A counter having a pair of enumerators, each having an oscillating arm, a control means comprising a bell crank, means to actuate said bell crank to render one arm inoperative and to permit operation of the other arm, and an actuating device to actuate whichever arm of the enumerator is free to operate.
2. A counter having a pair of enumerators, each having an oscillating arm, a control device comprising a bell crank, means to actuate said bell 120 crank to cause one of the arms of the bell crank to engage one of the arms of an enumerator and to retain such enumerator stationary but to permit operation of the other enumerator, a link connecting the two enumerator arms, and a com- 125 men actuating means for said link.
3. A counter having a pair of enumerators each having an oscillating arm, a link pivotally connected to one arm and having a pivot and slot connection to the other arm, and a reciprocating 130 actuating means connected to the link, a pivotally mounted bell crank having two arms, each of said arms being adapted alternately to engage one of the arms of the enumerator whereby one arm may be held stationary while the other is permitted 135 to operate, the reciprocation of the actuating means operating whichever arm is free to oscillate.
