Description

Oct. 17, 1933. w c HIERlNG 1,930,935
HAND BAG Filed Sep'E. 4, 1930 ATTORNEY Patented Oct. .17, 1933 William C. Hiering, Newark; J .,"assig nor 'to J. E. Mergott Company, Newark, N. J., a corporation of Delaware This invention relates to frames for ladies handbags, and more particularly to means for latching members of such frames together.
A popular type of hand bag frame includes a pair of U-shaped channelled frame members having the free ends of their legs pivotally connected. Heretofore, it has been the practice to attach latching devices to the upper edges of the horizontal portions of the frame members, the inherent resiliency of the frame members being relied upon to maintain tight engagement between latching members.
However, such positioning of thelatch members has been found objectionable in that considerable force must be used toengage the latch members, and the force must be applied practically at the center of the frame members adjacent the latch. Also, when the latch members become worn, they may be adjusted only by materially distorting the frame members.
It is an object of this invention to provide a latching device which is positioned on the under side of the horizontal channelled portions of the U-shaped' frame members, and which may be easily manipulated at all times.
A further object is the provision of a latch, the members of which are identical'in shape and may be simultaneously stamped from a blank, thus materially decreasing the cost of manufacture.
These and other advantageous objects, which will later appear, are accomplished by the simple and practical construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and exhibited in the i accompanying drawing, forming part hereof, and in which:
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a bag frame embodying the invention.
Figure 2 represents a partial plan view of a frame embodying the invention. a
Figure 3 represents a partial elevationalview of a bag frame member.
Figure 4 "represents a bottom view of the frame members showing the latch in an open position. I
Figure 5 represents a plan view of a blank showing the manner in which the latch members may be formed. I Referring to the drawing, in Figure 1 is shown a bag frame having a pair of U-shaped channelled frame members 6 and 7, which are pivotally connected at 8. Attached to the inner walls 9 and 10, of the framemembers 6 and 7, are T spaced apart curved supports 15 for the knobs ,attached the latch members .11 and 12, which are congruent as shown in Figure 5. Each latch Patent, is:
16 which facilitate the manipulation of the frame members. I To the underside of the horizontal portions of the frame members-6 and '7 are respectively member isprovided with end tabs 14 which pass through apertures in the base of the channels of the frame members and are bent over to J securely hold the members 11 and 12 .in place. (SeeFigureIi). f p
The latch members 11 and} 12 are respec- 'tively provided with holding prongs'13 and .13
which, as will be seen from Figure 5, are of the same shape. The latch membersfm'ay be simultaneously stamped from a sheet of metal, I orkthe ,member. 11 may be stamped from'the sheet of metal, and by merely turning themember 11 over it1is1s'een*that there; will be obtained the member 12. I
In operation, when the bag frame members arein the position asjshown in Figure 4, they may be latched together by pressing the frame members 6 and '7 together to causeprong 13 to cam over prong 13 andthe latchmem bers 11 and 12 to engage each other. The pressure on the frame members 6 and 7 may be, applied by means of [the spaced knobs 16, or it may be applied at=the curved portions of the frame members. From the above description it will beseen that I'haveprovided a simple andieffective latching device for bag frames, which device may be 1 manufactured at a small cost and applied readily. e I
Theforegoing disclosure is to be regarded as descriptive and illustrative. only, and not as restrictive or limitative of the invention, of
whichfobviously an embodiment, may be, constructed including many modifications without departing from the general scope herein indicated and denoted in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters 1. In combination with a hand bag frame having a pair of pivotally connected frame members, flat latch members secured to the.undersides of the frame members, each latch member being made from a single piece of flat material i and provided with a holding prong and with a recess adjacent the prong and conforming to the configuration 'of the prongof the'other latch member, the latch members being arranged in, lateral alinement on the. undersides of the frame 2. In combination with a hand bag frame having a pair of pivotally connected frame members,
flat latch members secured to the undersides of 'the frame members, each latch member be'- ing made from a single piece of flat material and provided with end tabs passing through and engaging with the frame member to secure the latch member thereto and being provided with 'a holding prong and with a recess adjacent the prong and conforming to the configuration of the prong of the other latch member, the latch members being arranged in lateral alinement on the undersides of the frame members and being 7 congruent so that the prongs will be in lateral alinement when the frame members are in an open position and the prong of one'latch member will first cam over the prong of the other latchmember and will then snap into the adjacent recess when the frame members are brought together.
