`It is an'object of this invention to produce a latch having a spring actuated bolt-theproject ing end of whichl is provided with a roller having a supporting pin which is concealed.
This invention also contemplates a latch having a spring actuated bolt comprised) of `two `interchangeable halves. Y This invention further contemplates ai latch having a spring 'loaded bolt retractable by a swinging handle which in turn is spring loaded y toY always return and hold the handle in its nor- V mal inoperative position regardless of whether the bolt is fully projected or not.

Figure 3 is a side elevation of the latch bolt.v Figure` 4 is a section along the line'4-v4of Figure 2. A
Figure 5 is a section along theline 5 5 of 'Figure 3.
Figure 6 is an elevation of one of the two interchangeable parts comprising the bolt.
Figure 7 is a plan view of one of the interchangeable parts' comprising the bolt.l
Figure 8 is an' end view of one part of the bolt.
Figure 9 is a plan view of amodiiied` form of latch. y
Figure 10 is a view along theline 10-10 of Figure 9.
FigureV 11 is a section through the modied form of the bolt.
Figure 12 is a side elevation ofthe modified form of bolt.
Figure 13 is a detail of one part of the modieclform of bolt. U
The latch has'an outer casing 1 vand an inner casing 2. The inner casing 2 is provided with the ears 3 which carry the pin,4 upon which the bolt retracting handle 5 is pivotally mounted. The casing 2 is provided with the bore 6' in whichis slidably mounted the bolt 7. The'bolt 7 is spring loaded by the coil bolt spring 8. The inner casing 2 is provided with the opening 9 o for the rollback 10. The rollback 10 abutsragainst the forward end of the opening 9 asjat 11 to limit the projection of the bolt.
The bolt '7 is composed of two identical interchangeable parts 12, shown detail in Figures 5 6, 'l and 8. Each bolt part 12 is, roughly speaking, a semi-cylinder so'that theV two parts which comprise the bolt form a cylindrical or round bolt. VEach bolt part comprises a head portion 13 provided in its innery face with the recess 14 for the pin 15 which supports the roller 16. It
Willbe noted that the recess 14 for the pin 15 extends into but not completely through the bolt head13 Vthus insuring i concealment for the Vroller pin. Eachv bolt half 12 is provided with a rib V1'7 and a corresponding groove 18 running lengthwise of the bolt half. bolt is likewise provided with a transverse opening 19 for the rivet20. The bolt half 12 is provided with a recess 21 and a semi-cylindrical tail portion 22-having a shoulder 23. A
To assemble the bolt the two'identical interchangeable parts 12 are -placed togetherso that the rib 17 of the one part 12 seats itself inthe groove 18.015 the other part and at the same time Y the pin 15 and roller 16 are mounted between the bolt-head portions 13 with the ends of the pin 15 supported in the recesses V14. The bolt parts 12 are then, riveted together with the rivet 20."V The-A tail parts 22 of the bolt are fixed together by a- Washer24 having a press t with the shoulder 23. It will be seen that the recesses 21 of the bolt parts cooperate to form `the rollback opening 25. It will be noted particularly in Figure 2 that the pin 15 which supports the roller 16 iscompletely concealed Vwithin the bolt head 13 thus giving the bolt head and roller a finished and neat appearance. v Y
The pin 4 which supports the handle 5 also carries the at U-spring having the 'spring ends 26 and 27, vthe spring end 26 extending downwardly through the opening 9 into the opening 25 in the bolt between the rollback 10 and the rear face 28 of the bolt opening 25. Thehub portionl of the handle 5 is provided with the radial slot 29 which accommodates the U-spring. As shown, the spring ends 26 and 27 are under tension or loaded.' i Hence, in case the bolt is not fully projected The forward portion of they the U-sprin'g will expand causing the rollback 10 1 to abut against the front face of the opening 9 as at 11 and thus cause the handle 5to assume itsV normal non-bolt retracting position as shown in Figure 1. y
In Figures 9 to 12 there is shown the modied form of the latch'and bolt. In theinodified form the latch bolt 3l is provided with the roller 32 and concealed roller pin 33 as in the principal form of the inventioni In the :modified form,A however, though the bolt is comprised ofV two parts 34 and 35 which are'riveted together by the Vrivet 36, the two parts 34 and 35 are not interchangeable. The part 34 of the bolt 31 is pro--Y vided with the recess 37 and the other part 35 concealed opening 39 and the lug portion 38 fitted inthe opening37, the two parts are then riveted together by the rivet 36.
YIt is evident from the above description that Y there is herein set forth a novel latch and bolt construction wherein the projecting bolt head is provided with a roller supported upon'a pin the ends of which are concealed within the bolt, thus giving the projecting bolt head a neat and, finished appearance. Further, the principal form of the invention is characterized in that the bolt is comprised mainly of two interchangeable or identical parts, either ofwhi'ch may be used means for fixing the members` together, each' instead of the other thus obviating theV necessity for keeping the bolt parts separate thereby cutting down handling costs and in case the main bolt parts are die-cast, which is preferable 'a1- though they may be otherwise fabricated, permits both parts to be made from the same die thus cutting die costs. e
