COMBINED FIREPL ACETHROAT AND AMPER Paul E. Boldt, Palo Alto, Calif.
Application September 15, 1931, Serial No. 562,985. Renewed August 15, 1933 1 Claim. (01. 126288) This invention relates to improvements in fireplaces and has particular reference to a combined fireplace throat and damper.
The principal object of this invention is to produce a device of this character whichis constructed of a blank, and so arranged that it may be employed in connection with the average fireplace.
A further object is to produce a device which- Figure 2 is a perspective 'view of the damper,
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the hood in which the damper is positioned,
Figure 4 is a top plan view of the damper actuating mechanism,
Figure 5 is a side elevation of Figure 4, and
Figure 6 is a fragmentary detail view showing the manner in which the damper is pivoted to the hood.
The ordinary fireplace permits the smoke to pass up the chimney at will, and provides no means whereby the draft up the chimney may be controlled. Applicant has provided means whereby this draft maybe controlled, and has from passing up the chimney from the room when the fireplace is out of use.
It is common in many apartments and houses to only occasionally use the fireplace, the customary heat being provided by means of registers or radiators, and it is therefore advantageous to V retain this heat in the room.
Referring to the drawing in detail, it will be noted that my device is entirely concealed from the front of the fire place, and consists of a blank 5, which has turned-down side pieces 6 and a turned out lintel '7 which supports the bricks'8, forming the upper portion of thefireplace, and
5 to which are pivotally secured actuating bars 13,
in a single plane.
invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.
further provided a means for preventing heat' particularly that portion adjacent the throat to which is' pivotally secured a chain element having a plurality of links capable of being bent This chain extends thru a guide 16'secured to the blank 5 and having its forward end flush with the face of the fireplace brick 8. A handle 17 is secured to the chain ele-. ment so as to extend beyond the face of the fire place brick, as best illustrated in Fig. 1,v where it may be grasped and moved outwardly or inwardly, to open or close the damper any given 5 amount. It will here be noted, that thru the use of this particular type of chain, which can only be pivoted in one plane, that, when the chain is pulled out, oneor more links, each link, when hanging downwardly, will prevent the remaining links from pulling rearward movement, thus 7 size, shape and arrangement of parts may be resorted to withoutdeparting from the spirit of the Having thus described my invention, I claim:-- In a device of the character described, the combination with a fire place having a throat, of a plate positioned in said fire place and adjacent said throat, said plate having down-turned side portions, a damper pivoted between said side portions, and when in a vertical position, being adapted to close said throat and remote means for actuating said damper, said remote means including an arm secured to said damper and a laterally rigid chain connected to said arm, said chain being capable of movement in one plane only, and extending to a point outside of said fireplace.
PAUL E. BOLDT.
