Description

. N. c. M. GIFFORD &. P. ABELL.
PUMP-ROD ADJUSTER.
No. 192,690. Patented July 3,1877.

UNIT D STATES PATENT OFFICE.
N. O. MARTIN GIFFORD AND PRATT ABELL, OF BABNHARTS MILLS, PA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PUMP-ROD ADJUSTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 192,690, dated July 3, 1877 application fihed May 21, 1877.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, N. O. MARTIN GIF- FORD and PRATT ABELL, of BarnhartsMills, in the county of Butler and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Adjuster for Oil-Pumping Apparatus, of which the following is a specification Figure lis a side elevation, partly in section. Fig. 2 is a top view.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Our invention relates to an improved device i'or clamping the polish-rods of oilpumping apparatus; and it consists in the combination, with across-bar that is connected with the walking-beam of a' pumping apparatus by rods, and through which the polish-rod passes, of a gib that extends through the crossbar, a bolt that extends from the end of the bar to the gib, and an eccentric for forcing the gib into contact with the polish-rod, all as hereinafter more fully described.
In the drawing, A is the cross-bar, which is provided with wrists B, for receiving the rods that connect it with the walking-beam, and a is an opening formed in the bar A to receive the polish-rod G and the concaved gib b. The opening a extends through one side of the bar A, so that the polish-rod may be removed laterally from the opening. The end D of the cross-bar A is elongated and slotted to receive the eccentric E. The cross-bar Ais bored longitudinally from the slot to the central opening a, to receive the bolt F, which is provided with a triangular head, 0, that is engaged by the eccentric E. Y
The operation is as follows: The cross-bar A is connected with the walking-beam of the pumping apparatus by means of connectingrods, in the usual way. The polish -rod is clamped in the cross-bar by the eccentric F, so that the walking-beam raises and lowers the rod, together with the sucker-rod, to which it is attached, at each oscillation. By turning the eccentric, by means of its lever d, the polish-rod may be instantaneously released or clamped, as may be required.
We do not limit or confine ourselves to the form and arrangement herein shown and described, as they may he varied without departing from our invention.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with the hollow wrist B, of the cam-lever E, pivoted in the head D, and the bolt F, having inclined face on its head 0, as and for the purpose specified.
N. O. MARTIN GIFFORD. PRATT ABELL.
