RADIATOR CAP Filed Jan. 16, 1931 INVEN MOSES E. C NEY mmm Patented Aug. 8, 1933 UNITED STATES PATENT oFFlcE Meter Gauge & Equipment Corporation,
Toledo, Ohio, a Corporation of Delaware Application January 16,
5 Claims.
My invention consists of a simple and economical construction of cap for the radiators of automobiles, a cap which can be applied and detached easily but which will hold firmly in place when applied.
In the accompanying drawing- Figure l is a side elevation of the cap;
Fig. 2 a vertical section, and
Fig. 3 an inverted plan view.
My improved cap is of the bayonet joint fastening type, that is to say, the cap is provided on its underside with radially projecting fingers which enter and engage in bayonet grooves in the inside of the lling neck of the radiator oi the automobile. In Fig. 2, this radiator neck is indicated in dotted lines at l0.
The cap A is preferably provided on its underside within its peripheral flange a with a gasket B, which will come to rest upon the top of the filling neck 10. The radial fingers f-f, which are carried by the cap to engage the bayonet grooves in the neck of the radiator are formed on a sheet metal cup-piece F.
As shown in Figures l, 2 and 3, the iingers f-f are preferably integral with the sheet metal euppiece F, being channel shaped in cross-section with depending anges which are carried around the cup-piece. This cup-piece is normally held up to the underside of the cap A by means of a helical spring S carried by a centre piece T in the form of a hollow thimble with an annular ange t at the bottom, on which the lower part of the helical spring S is supported while the upper end of the spring bears against the underr side of the cup piece F.
The thimble T is of material diameter, so as to be close to the inner periphery of the spring S. This thimble is secured to the underside of the cap A by a screw C passed through the hollow thimble and threaded into the underside of the cap, the large head of the screw lying inside the thimble.
The cup piece F is prevented from turning about the centre piece by reason of the fact that teats g (three in the present instance) cast or otherwise formed on the underside or the cap pass through corresponding openings in the cup-piece F.
I claim:
1. A radiator cap, provided with a movable cup-piece having radial fingers in combination with a flanged hollow thimble and securing means having a head in the hollow of said thimble and securing it to the underside of the cap and a 1931. Serial No. 509,244
helical spring supporting the cup-piece on the flanged thimble.
2. A radiator cap, provided with a movable cup-piece having radial fingers with a depending flange extending onto said cup-piece, in combination with a flanged hollow thimble and a screw securing it to the underside of the cap, and a helical spring supporting the cup-piece on the flanged thimble.
3. A radiator cap, provided with a movable cup-piece having radial ngers, in combination with a flanged hollow thimble and a screw securing it to the underside of the cap, the head of said screw lying within said thimble and a helical spring supporting the cup-piece on the flanged thimble.
4. A radiator cap, provided with a movable sheet metal cup-piece having radially projecting fingers formed thereon, in combination with a hollow thimble having an annular flange at the bottom, means for securing the top of said thimble to the underside of said cap, and resilient means bearing on said annular flange and engaging the underside of said cup-piece for yieldably holding the same up against the underside of said cap.
5. A radiator cap of the bayonet joint fastening type provided on its underside with a sheet metal cup-piece having radially projecting iinr gers formed thereon which enter and engage in 8" bayonet grooves in the inside of the filling neck, in combination with a hollow thimble having an annular flange at the bottom, a screw passed therethrough and threaded in the underside of the cap to secure said thimble thereto, and a 0 helical spring carried by said thimble and bearing on said annular ange for holding up said sheet metal cup-piece.
MOSES E. CHENEY.
