Description

July 18, 1933. 'J 5 MILLS I 1,919,071
COMBINED METAL DOOR JAMB AND TRIM Filed Jan. 25, 1929 A Zia. J
A TTO/P/YE v dominant object of the invention bein Patented July 18, 1933 vvQFFFEQEJ 7 JOHN S. MILLS, OF ST. LOUIS, IfIISSOUB-I COMBINED METAL noon Jinan Ann TRIM Application filed January 25, 1929, Serial No. 334- 889.
This invention relates .generally to improved door jambs and trims, and more specifically to a combined door jamband trim which is formed of sheet metal, the preg to produce a combined door jamb and trim which may be applied to a door opening at the minimum expense of time and energy, and which when so applied will present a high ly pleasing appearance.
Prior to this invention, metallic door ambs have been produced, but in the use of these door jambs it was necessary to employ the usual trims, which heretofore were separate elements. When the door ambs referred to were being put into service said door jambs were applied to the door openings in the usual manner, after which it was necessary to ap ply the trims to the door openings, and because said door jambs and trims were applied to the door openings separately the time consumed in such application was considerable.
By producing the door jamb and trim in the form of a single unit, as will be the case in the use of my invention, both of said ele ments are applied to the door opening in a single operation, whereby a substantial saving in time and energy is effected.
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary elevation of a door and door opening, the latter of which is provided with my improved combined door j amb and trim.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged cross-section on line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a cross-section illustrating a modified form of the invention.
In the drawing, wherein is illustrated one embodiment merely of the invention, and referring for the moment particularly to Fig. 1, A designates a wall or partition in which a door opening B is formed. C designates a door of ordinary construction, which is adapted to close the door opening B. The door opening B is provided with my improved combined door jamband trim, which is designated generally by the reference character D, said door jamb and trim extending upwardly from the floor at the opposite sides of the door opening and across the top of said door opening (Fig. 1).
Referring now toFig. 2, it will be noted that the'wall or partition A includes the usual studs E to which laths F are secured in the usual manner. 1 designates a portion of the door jamb, said portion being locatec Within the door opening B and being extended vertically along the side faces of said door openin and-horizontally along the top face thereof. '.The portion 1 of the door jamb along the opposite sides and top thereof'is 69 shaped to provide a door stop 2, said portion 1 being part of a sheet metal construction and the door stop 2 being formed integrally with said portion 1 by being pressed outwardly therefrom. At the opposite sides of the door opening the door jamb includes relatively'short portions 3, which are each arranged at an approximate right angle to the portion 1.
Located at the opposite sides of the door F jamb D, at both the sides and top of the door opening, are the trims 4, which comprise parts of my improved combined door jamb and trim. The trims 4; extend outwardly be yond the portions 3 and are preferably shaped 7 5 so as to have a pleasing appearance, the portion 4 of the trim shown in Fig. 2 in crosssection being in the form of a compound curved portion. The trims 4: are integrally 80 connected with the portion 1 of the door j amb by a portion 5, and the portion 3 already referred to, and at the inner side of the combined door jamb and trim the trim 4 is provided with an inwardly extended portion 6,
which is formed integrally with said trim.
Arranged within the combined door jamb and trim at the sides and top thereof are backing elements 7, which are preferably formed of wood, said backing elements being interposed between the portion 1 and the portions 6, and the opposite end faces of said backing elements preferably being in contact with the inner faces of the portions 3, as shown in Fig. 2. The portions 6 are secured to the backing elements 7 by means of suitable fastening devices 8 (Fig. 2). The backing elements constitute permanent parts of the structure of the combined door jamb and trim, and said backing elements are provided with apertures 9 formed transversely n e. u U
therethrough, which coincide with apertures 10 formed through the portion 1 of the combined door jamb and trim.
In applying the improved door jamb and trim to a door opening, said door jamb and trim is arranged in place in said door opening and screws or other suitable fastening devices 11 are extended through the apertures 9 and 10 in the backing elements and .1 portion 1, respectively, and are passed into tion A, portions of said plaster will pass through said apertures .12, whereby keys 13 will be produced which will secure the plaster to the trims. l/Vlien the combined door jamb and trim has been applied to the door 1- opening in the manner described, the door C is hung in place thereon, the hinges H of the door being secured to said combined door jamb and trim in any suitable manner.
In Fig. 3 of the drawing, I illustrate a form of the invention which will be used in association with partitions which are narrower than the partit on shown in Fig. 2. In this form of the invention the door stop 2, instead of being located at the approxit;. mate transverse center of the partition A,
as is the door stop illustrated in Fig. 2, is positioned at one side of the partition, Also, instead oflproviding a double row of fasten.- ing devices for securing the combined door 1 'ja'mb and trim to the partition, as in Fig. 2,
only one row of fastening devices 11 is employed.
I claim:
1. An improved article of manufacture comprising a door jamb and a trim for door openings, said door jamb and trim being formed of one piece of sheet metal to provide a unitary structure, backing means permanently associated with said structure, so as to constitute a part thereof before and during the entire use of said structure, and fastening devices extended inwardly from a face of said door jamb, through said backing means, and into a support by which the combined door jamb and trim is supported.
2. An improved article of manufacture comprising a door jamb and a trim for door openings, said door jamb and trim being formed of one piece of sheet metal to provide a unitary structure, wood backing means permanently associated with said structure so as to constitute a part thereof before and during the entire use of said structure, and fastening devices extended inwardly from a face of said door jamb, through said backing means, and into a support by which the com bined door amb and trim is supported.
3. An improved article of manufacture comprising a door jamb and a trim, said door jamb and trim being formed of sheet metal and bein formed integrally with each other to provide a unitary structure, backing means permanently associated with said structure so as to constitute a part thereof before and during the entire use of said structure, portions of said trim overlapping said backing elements, fastening devices securing said overlapping portions of said trim to said backing elements, and fastening devices extended inwardly from the face of said door jamb, through said backing means, and into a. support by which the combined door jamb and trim is supported, the opposite edges of the sheet of metal of which the combined door jamb and trim is formed being concealed between said backing means
