lMPROVEMENT IN lCE-CREEPERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 191,863, dated June 12, 1877; application filed February 9, 1877.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES A. KRYTER, of the city of Wheeling, county of Ohio, State of West Virginia, have invented certain Improvements in Ice-Creepers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing.

My invention consists of an adjustable device, which, for convenience, term an icecreeper, made of thin sheet-iron or other suitable material, so constructed as to be readily attached to the foot by means of straps, either over the boot or elastic shoe, as desired, to prevent slipping upon the ice, and, when not in use, tobe easily folded together in a con venient shape to be carried about the person.

To enable others to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to more fully explain its construction and mode of operation, reference being had to the drawing, in which Figure l is a perspective view of the ice creeper attached'to the foot; Fig. 2, a central longitudinal section; Fig. 3, a top view or plan.

In the drawing, the letter A represents a heel-plate provided with points or projections b b b b, and having ears or lugs a, a, to which the straps are attached, turned up a suitable height to receive and bear against the round or back of the heel when the straps are buckled around the ankle,- thus preventing the heel from slipping off the plate when the wearer is walking up or down an incline. B is a bar fastened to the heel-plate A, and extending to the ball of the foot, at which point it is fastened to a cross-bar, D, provided with points or projections b b b, similar to the heel-plate, and turned up at the ends sufficient to ,inclose the sole of the boot or-shoe, and to receive the ends of the straps, which are fastened thereto. The bar B is hinged or pivoted at O, for the purpose of folding the device together, so that it may be conveniently carried in the pocket, if so desired. 1

The advantages of my invention are these, viz: It is an effectual safeguard against slipping upon the ice,jas the heel and ball of the foot are both calked; can be easily and quickly fastened to the foot over the leather boot or rubber shoe without injury to it, as is the case with creepers attached to the boot or shoe by means of clamps or thumb-screws; can be folded together, when not in use, so as to be conveniently carried about the person; it is very light in weight, and strong and durable.
