PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL S. JONES, OF NORRISTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN GAS-REGULATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 191,860, dated June 1 1877; application filed Ma 's, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, SAMUEL S. JoNEs, of
N orristown, in the county of Montgomery and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gas-Regulator, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a vertical central section of my improved gas-regulator, and Fig. 2 a side View of the regulating-valve.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre sponding parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish for gas-burners a simple and reliable regulator, so so that the consumption of gas may be economized, and, if desired, entirely interrupted atany one burner.
The invention consists of a burner socket or base, with exterior threaded issuing-tube and slotted cap 01' valve adjustable thereon. The valve is inclosed by a bulb-shaped outer part, to which the burner is attached.
In the drawing, A represents the base or socket of a gasburner, by which the same is An issuingtube, B, with exterior screw-thread, extends from'the socket A, and carries an interior threaded capor valve, 0, with two or four vertical slits, a, at diametrically opposite points, the cap turning up or down on the tube B, and admitting the gas to pass through those portions of the slits above the upper edge of the tube B.
By screwing the valve higher upon the tube B the passages for th'egas are enlarged,by
lowering the valve decreased in length, and thereby the quantity of gas escaping regulated to a nicety.
i The tube B and valve 0 are inclosed by a bulb-shaped outer section, D, of glass, metal, or other material, into Whose upper part the burner D, of the usual shape and material, is seated. The adjustable valve 0 forms adiaphragm, that checks the flow of gas so asto prevent the issuing of the same, as required, the bulb-shaped section keeping up a uniform supply to the burner.
Whenever it is desired to discontinue the use of any burner, the valve is screwed down tightly on the issuing-tube B, and thereby the supply of gas is entirely interrupted. This is sometimes of great convenience, and especially in servants rooms, hall-rooms, and also during summer, when the house isunoccupied, forming thereby a point of considerable advantage, as it prevents any unnecessary waste and leakage of gas.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A. gas-regnlator consisting of socket-tube A, having threaded extension-tube B, side-slotted cap-valve O a, adjustable on said extension, and the inclosing-bulb D, the latter connecting withv the burner D, as shown and described.
