My invention relates to a fence post and rail construction and more particularly to fences such as may be used around lawns, parkways and the like. i
It has, heretofore, in the construction of fences of this class, been necessary that the upright members be placed into the ground at. r
form of connection for the rail members;
A further object of my invention is to provide a fence construction wherein a rigid structure may be obtained with a minimum of material;
A further object is to provide a construction wherein the rail members may be, in
cross-section, square, circular, or any other i desired shape or contour;
A still further object is to provide acon struction which may be assembled with great ease; I j j Other objects will appear from the description and claims. I

Referring to the drawing in detail, the embodiment shown comprises an upright post 1 over which is placed the union member 2, said union member having one or more openings 3 of suitable size and shape to receive the rail members 4:, said rail members being the lower edges ofthe ends 15 of the rail memclamp members and the upper end of post 1.

provided with angular cut portions 5 at their point of juncture. The post l has adjacent its upper edge a plurality of struck-injportions 6 under which the complementary lugs v 7 of the clamping member 8 may be retained. The clamping member 8 is prevented from falling into the post 1 by means of its flange 9 extending over theupper edge of said post. A bolt '12 extends inwardly from an opening 19 in the" union member. The clamping member 8 has provisionsfor receiving the screw-threaded portion of said bolt 12 and is provided withjaws 149 into which are placed hers 4. j
In Fig. 5 the lower portion of the post 1 has struck therefrom a plurality of tongues 16; said tongues being provided with angular portions 17.
In Fig. 6 the plug 18 has beendriven downwardly causing said tongues to be forced outwardly, whereby angular portions 17 enter medium surrounding post 1 and anchor the same in position.
To assemble the fence thus shown and described, suitable holes 23, indicated by dotted lines, are drilled in the ground into which are placed the posts 1. After said posts have been placed in their proper positions the plugs 18 are driven down to anchor said posts The clamping members are then placed in the upper ends of the posts 1 and are retained in position by means of the complementary lugs 6 and 7 in the usual bayonet or breechlock fitting. The said clamp member 8 is rotated until its lug 21 abuts the lock-seam 22 of the post 1, said seam preventing any fur: ther rotation.

The rail members 4 are then inserted into the openings 3 of the union member so that the lower edges 15 rest in the jaws 14 provided in the clamp member 8. The bolt 12 is then tightened, causing the entire assembly to become rigid and immovably related.
I have thus shown and described a fence construction which will be easy and economi cal to manufacture and which willbe quickly and efliciently installed in desired places.
While I have described my invention for 5 use around lawns and parkways, it will be evident to those skilled in the art that it-may be used in any place where a fence having related characteristics to that described may be desired. It will also be apparent that numerous modifications may be made and I, therefore, desire to be limited only by the prior art and the scope of the appended claims. I
Having thus shown and described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A fence post construction comprising a tubular post, a clam-ping member secured adjacent the upper end of the post having a lower jawpo-rtio'n for engagement-with the outside of a horizontal frame member, a second' clamping member having an upper jaw portion for engagement with said horizontal member and a skirt portion surrounding the v upper endof the tubular post, and means for drawing said clamping members together to grip the ho-rizontalmember. .7
2; A fence post construction comprising a tubular post, an anchorage member secured 3,0 in the upper end of said post and having a screw-threaded opening and Y a clamping member having a jaw portion for engaging a horizontal frame member and having a skirt portion surrounding the upper end of the post, and means for drawing said clamping member downwardly to grip the horizontal member comprising a screw swiveled in said clamping member and threaded into said anchorage member.

4. A fence post construction comprising a tubular post, a clamping member secured adjacent the upper end of the post having a 'lower jaw portion for engagement with the outside of a horizontal frame member, a second clamping member having an upper jaw 9; portion for engagement with said horizontal member, and a skirt portion in telescop c relation with the lower jaw member, said skirt portion having an'opening' through which the end of the horizontal member .is inserted for engagement by the jaw members.
