Description

P. R. BROESKE July 18, 1933.
SWITCH Filed-June 20, 1932 ATTORNEY Patented J l 18, 1933 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE PA'UK B. BROESKE, OF NORTH CANTON, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE HOOVER COMPANY, OF NORTH CANTON, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO SWITCH Application filed June 20,
The present invention relates to electrical switches, and particularly to means for mounting an electric switch within a hollow tubular handle, such as might be used with a suction cleaner or similar apparatus,
or within a box. More specifically the invention comprises the provision of new and novel switch-mounting means in which the switch is easily mounted and dismounted, being held in place by resilient means when in normal position.
It is an object of the present invention to provide new and novel electrical switch mounting construction. It is a further object to provide a; novel construction for mounting a switch within a hollow tubular member. These and other more specific objects will appear upon reading the iollow= in specification and claims and upon consi ering in connection therewith the accompanying drawing.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure 1 is a disclosure of the present invention embodied within a hollow tubular handle which is shown partly in section;
Figure 2 is a section upon the line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Fi ure 3 is a view in perspective of the switc mounting within a hollow tubular handle, a portion of the handle being broken away to better show the switch position therein; 7
Figure 4 shows a modified embodiment of the present invention embodied within a tu bular housing which is shown partly in sec= tion;
Figure 5 is a view similar to Figure showing a still further modified embodiment of the present invention.
In the drawing, and Figures 1 to 3 in pearticular, an elongated hollow tubular mem= r 1 is shown provided with alongitudinab ly extending opening or slot 2. A cover plate 3 is provided which has the same curvature as the tubular member 1 and closes the openin 2, being suitably secured to the member 1 y screws4, 4 at its ends. A. conductor 5 which include leads 6 and 7 is carried by the cover pie 3, being suitably secured 1932. Serial No. 818,155.
thereto by means includin a strain-relief member 8 and a clamp mem er 9.
The switch indicated generally by the reference character 10, includes a body 11 formed of suitable insulating material, and an actuating lever 12. The switch is po-. sitioned within the member 1 in such relationship that the shoulder 14 on the body 11 securely seats within an opening 13 in the cover plate and the lever or trigger 12 extends therethru. The body 11 of the switch 10 is of such height that its side wall opposite the lever side closely approaches the enclosing tubular member 1. Between the wall and the surrounding member rubber seat 15 is positioned which is of such dimensions that with the switch in place and the cover plate 3 secured tothe body 1, it is compressed thereby forcing the switch body 11 firmly against the cover plate 3 and maintaining the shoulder 14 within the opening 13. The upper wall of body 11 may be ribbed, as shown at 16, so that upon the compression of member 15 relative movement between the switch and the seat member is prevented, the outer surface of seat member 15 being curved and rounded so that it substantially conforms to the curvature of the tubular member 1.
As a precautionary 4 surroundin metallic tubular member 1. a fibre enclosing member 17 is provided which extends the length of the body 111, being car ried by the seat member 15.
Referring now to the embodiment of the invention shown'in Figure 4 a switch or a slightly modified type is shown andis se-= cured in place in a slightly diiierent man.- ner. The conductor 5 is secured to the cover plate 3 in the same manner as in the first embodiment. The body 11 of switch 10? is provided with a shoulder 14 of somewhat greater extent than that in the first embodiment, a detail necessary by the difference in the actuating levers l2, 12 in the two embodiments. In the present exemplification of the invention the body ll of the switch is provided with a groove or channel 18 along its upper face which is undercut at its ends and which carries a flexible fiat leaf spring 19, the ends,
of which extend into the ends of the recess to I revent the dislodgment of the member.
ith the construction asembled the spring 19 contacts the enclosing body 1 and is compressed, the action resulting in the forcing of switch body 11 a ainst the cover plate 3 which is itself hel in place b screws 4, 4 as before. The shoulder 14 in t e opening 13 in the cover plate prevents any longitudinal movement of the switch and spring 19 prevents the dislodgment of shoulder 14 from its seat 13;
In the embodiment of the invention shown in Figure 5 the flat spring 19 of the embodiment shown in Figure 4 has been replaced by a coil sprin 20, the ends of which extend within the un ercut ends of the channel 18 in the manner oi sprin 19. In operation spring 20 is the functional equivalent of spring 19 and prevents the displacement of t e switch 10.
I claim:
1. In a switch mounting, a hollow member having an opening on one side, a removable cover plate closing said opening, an electric conduit carried by said cover plate extending therethru into said hollow member, a switch positioned in said hollow member and connected to said conduit including a wall spaced from said enclosing member and an o erating lever extended thru said cover p ate, and a resilient seat member compressed between said wall and said enclosing ollow member pressing said switch against said cover plate,
2. In a switch mounting, a hollow member having an opening on one side, a removable cover plate closing said opening and being itself provided with an opening, a switch including a rigid body positioned in said hollow member and including a portion which seats within the opening in said plate and a wall op osite said portion, and a resilient compressible member between said wall and the surrounding hollow member for the purpose of holding said switch body against said cover plate with said portion in said opening.
3. In a switch mounting, a hollow member having an openingon one side, a removable cover plate closin said opening and being itself provided wit an opening, a switch including a rigid body positioned in said holortion which low member and including a seats within the o ening in said plate and a wall opposite sai portion, a resilient compressible member between said wall and the surrounding hollow member for the purpose of holding said switch body against said cover plate with said portion in said opening, and an insulatin cover seated on said resilient com ressigle member and extended around sai switch.
4. In a switch mounting, a hollow member having an opening on one side, a removable cover plate closing said opening, a switch ineluding a body and an actuating lever, said body contacting said plate an said lever extending therethru, and a com ressible member comprising a spring carrie by said body in contact with the enclosing hollow member for the pur ose of forcing said body against said cover p ate.
