The invention relates to an article of manufacture and more particularly to a material for use as a packing, belting, bumper, or for any purpose it may be adaptable for use.

The primary object of the invention is the provision of an article of this character,

wherein the body thereof is made from' sponge rubber compressible to repel water, moisture or air, of a shape and of the required length and cross-sectional size for the purpose intended and within this body is arranged a closely coiled spring, the latter being coextensive with the length of said body and its ends so arranged as to permit the detachable joining thereof or their detachable connection with a part, so that when the body is applied it will be under tension and secure, yetpossessed of the requisite resilient qualities to assure expansion and contraction as the occasion may require, the article being novel of construction and capable of a variety ofl applications and accommodating itself to different uses.

Another obj ect of the invention is the provision of an article of this character, wherein the `spring within the body constitutes a core capable of expanding and contracting, the latter taking place after the stretching of this core while the body is iiexible and resilient as well 'as expansible and contractible.

A further object of the invention is the provision of an article ofv this character, wherein the same is novel in' its entirety andv likewise in assembly to render it a plicable for various uses under variable con itions.

A still further object of the invention is the provision of an article of this character,

which is extremely simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and eilicient wherever used, strong, durable, and -inexpensive to manufacture and install.

With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the features of construction, bombination and arrangement of parts as will be herein-after more fully de-,

scribed, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which discloses the preferred embodiment of the invention and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.

In the accompanying drawing article comprises a body 5, preferably made from sponge rubber of a density so that when compressed it will repel water, moisture or air, and this body has a central bore 6 therethro'u h and opens through opposite ends, the body eing of any required length and crosssectional size, in this instance said body being round,yet it may be of any other` contour, if found desirable.

Within the bore 6 in said body 5 is arranged a closely coiled spring 7'which is coextensive. with the length of the body and one end of this spring is preferably formed with a tapered plug screw terminal 8, which initiallg protrudes slightly from the bore 6 at the en of the body, so that the ends of the core may be detachably joined by tapping into the other terminal of the spring or detachabl connected with a part to which the artic e may be a plied for use. y

W en the ends of the spring 7 are joined v together at their terminals or attached to a part then the body can be worked onto these terminals 8 and 8 so as to conceal them, it being understood of course that in applying the article the spring 7 is stretched or eX- panded to give the required tension thereto before attaching the terminals to apart so. as

to maintain the body tight when applied and in this manner the extent of the latter between its ends will beheld in place against dis lacement and at the same time taut. n Figure 4 of the drawing there` is shown a vacuum cleaner 9, to which is applied the article including the body 5 and the spring 7, which latter serves as an expanding'V and contracting core to said body as wellv as a retaining element for applying the article, and

in this application the terminals 8 are joined together and the spring is expanded over the body of the cleaner so that the article will be 6 firmly held in lace thereon and function as a bumper for t e said cleaner. The cleaner shown in Figure 4 of the drawing is merely for the purpose of illustrating one application for use of the article, as the latter is 10 ada table for many uses for example as a pac g, weather strip, belting, etc.

From the foregoing it is thought that the construction and manner of use of the article will be clearl understood and therefore a more extendedy explanation has been omitted for the sake of brevity.

What is claimed is:

An article of manufacture, comprising a body of sponge rubber having a central bore, a closely coiled expansible spring formi a core within the bore, and a connector or the terminals of the spring and accessible at the ends of the body.
