Description

E. W. WALKER.
WHEELBARROW.
No. 191,735. Patented .Tune 5,1877.
"mW/1 2 lllllllllllllll N.PEI'ERS. PHOTC-LITHQGRAFHER. WASHINGTON. D C1 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE?.
'EDWARD W. WALKER, OF GOSHEN, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN WHEELBARROWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l 91,735, dated June 5, 1877; application filed May 18, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I., EDWARD W. WALKER, of Goshen, Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wheelbarrows, of which the following is a clear, full, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of thisspecification, in Which- Figure l is a perspective view of a Wheelbarrow with my improvements attached. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section.
My invention relates to wheelbarrows for removing dirt and for garden use; and it consists in the combination of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I Will'proceed to describe the exact manner in which I have car-- ried it ont.
In the drawings, A A represent the side rzils, B B the legs, and C the body of a wheelbarrow. The side rails A A are grooved 1ongitudinally, as shown in Fig. 3, to receive the bottom D, and are secured together by the metal rods E and screw-tap e, whereby the bottom D is held rmly in position without nails or other means of fastening. The metal rods .E I usually pass through the girts K, though they may pass outside of the said girts Without departing from the spirit of my invention. The body C is only used when the barrow is used for removing dirt,.and then may have an independent bottom. F F are curved supports passing from the legs B B up in front of the barrow to sustain the front board, and are bolted to the rails A A at the points a a. The bow-support G is bolted at each end to the curved supports F F, and, resting againstV the legs B B, affords a firm bearing for the rear board of the body, as shown in Fig. l, and aids materially in securely binding together the rails A A.
By this construction I am enabled to make a wheelbarrow substantial and light, and at a comparatively small cost.
Having thus explained my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The rails A A, provided with longitudinal grooves a a, in combination with the tloor D and metal rods E, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The railsAAand legs B B, in combination with the curved supports F F and b'owsupport Gr, all constructed to operate substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
EDWARD W. WALKER.
