IMPROVEMENT IN CHICKEN-COOPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 191,621, dated J mm 5, 1877 application filed March 12, 1877.
'To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, DANIEL M. SULLIVAN and THoMAs A. RETALLIo, of Montgomery City, in the county of Montgomery and State of Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Ohicken-(loop, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a side elevation in part section. Fig. 2 is a transverse section on line as w in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on line y y in Fig. 1.
Our invention consists of a coop adjustable vertically on a Standard, and provided with removable partitions and doors for convenience in cleansing.
In the drawing, A is the frame of the coop, which is placed on a standard, a, at thetop of which is placed a pulley, b. A cord, 0, is attached to the top of the coop-frame, and runs over the pulley, and is attached to-a counter-weight,-d. The coop is divided by a central transverse partition into two compartments, of, which are subdivided by transverse partitions g, composed-of slats, and held in place by a dowel-pin at the bottom, and by a pin, h, at the top. The vertical strips that hold the slats of the partitions 9 together are grooved on each side to receive sliding partitions 1', which are arranged on a central longitudinal line of the coop, and at right angles to the partitions g. Grooves are also made in the ends and central partition of the coop to receive these sliding partitions.
The compartments e f are provided on each side either with doors B, composed of slats and hinged at the bottom of the coop, or with door O, which are provided with openings j, the said openings being closed by doors B, composed of slats, and hinged at the lower side of the opening 7', so that when it is open it rests in a horizontal position and forms a step by which the hens may enter the coop. The doors B, when closed, are secured by a button, E, and the doors B 0, when closed, are secured by buttons D.
F is a removable roof, which Shuts over the top of the coop, and is secured by clasp-hooks k, which engage eyes I at the end of the coop. GG are folding legs hinged to the bottom of 'the coop, and capable of being let down into a vertical position when the coop is raised.
A slide, m, closes the space through which the standard a passes.
This coop is especially designed for laying and setting hens. Each of the compartments 6 f are subdivided into four Spaces for nests. The compartments having the doors 0 are intended for the laying hens, and the compartments having the doors B are for the setting hens.
The advantages claimed for our improved coop are that it is conveniently arranged for the purpose intended. It is portable, and may be easily taken apart for cleansing.
It possesses the further advantage of being easily raised from the ground, when cold or dampness renders it necessary.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A chicken-coop consisting of a frame. A, divided into compartments 6 f, and provided with partitions g, slides i, doors B G, and removable roof F, all constructed and combined substantially as herein Shown and described.
. 2. The vertically sliding chicken-coop A, having folding legs G, in combination with the supporting-post a and counter-balance device consisting of the pulley b, rope e, and weight d, as and for the purpose set forth.
