Description
Patented June 5,1877.
ATTBBNEYS.
ILPEYERS, FNOTO-UYHOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON n C UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGFt MALAOHIAH ROBY, OF KDSGIUSKO, MISSISSIPPI.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED COTTON SCRAPER AND CULTIVATOR.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 191,613, dated June 5, i877 application filed April 30, 1877.
To all whom it mayconeern:
Be it known that I, Col. MALAOHIAH ROBY of Kosciusko, in the county of Attala and State of Mississippi, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combined Cotton Scraper and Cultivator, of which the followin g is a specification:
Figure 1 is a top view of my improved machine. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This machine is so constructed as to bar off and dirt or cultivate cotton-plants at one operation; and the invention relates to the construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter described and claimed.
A is the center or main beam, to the forward end of which the draft is attached. To the beam A, a little in the rear of its forward end, is attached the middle part of the crossbar B, in which are formed a number of holes to receive the hooks or clevises by which the forward ends of the side beams O are secured to said cross-bar.
To the rear end of the main beam A is attached the middle part of a cross-bar, D, to which the rear ends of the side beams O are socured by a bow and yoke, E, passed around them diagonally, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and which are tightened, when adjusted in place, by nuts screwed upon the ends of the bows.
F are two scrapers, which are secured to two standards, G. The standards G are secured to the inner sides of the forward parts of the inner side beams C by bands H passed around said beams (J, and diagonally around said standards G, and tightened in place by wedges or other suitable means, so that the scrapers can be readily adjusted to work deeper or shallower in the ground, and easily detached when not required i'or use.
I are the cultivating plows or dirters, the standards J of which are attached to the side beams O, the plows and standards of the inner side beams being placed in advance of those attached to the outer side beams, as shown in Fig. 1.
K are the handles, the forward ends of which are attached to the center beam A a little in the rear of the cross-bar B. The handles K are connected by one or more rounds, k, and are supported by a standard, L, the lower end of which is attached to the central beam A, and to the upper end of which is attached the round k.
When the machine is to he used as a cultivator, the scrapers F G are detached, and may be replaced by cultivating-plows.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the cross-bars B D, the side beams O and their plows and standards, the bows and yokes E, the scrapers F G, and the bands 11 with each other and with the central beam A, substantially as herein shown and described.
M. ROBY.
