Patented June 20, 1933 UNITED STATES HARRY H. MORE-ELL, OF
BER-K11]LEY,v CALIFORNIA PENCIL ERASER HOLDER Application filed July 15,
This invention relates to improvements in pencil eraser holders.
The principal object of the invention is to produce a holder wherein a rubber or eraser may be reversed end for end so as to lengthen the life of the eraser portion of the pencil.
A further object is to produce a device which may be employed With an ordinary lead pencil.
A further object is to produce a device which is economical to manufacture.
A further object is to produce a device wherein the same machinery now employed for making the ferrule upon the end of a lead pencil may also be employed in manufacturing my device.
A still further object is to produce a device wherein the eraser will be held rigid while in use in counter-distinction to various attachments wherein the eraser is more or less free to slip around during the erasure operation.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of my device as the same would appear when attached to an ordinary lead pencil,
Fig. 2 is a View similar to Fig. 1, having the eraser portion removed from the pencil and ferrule portion,
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view taken on the line 4tl of Fig. 2.
It is common to secure to the top of an ordinary lead pencil, a ferrule which has an eraser positioned therein. This eraser soon wears away with the result that it is now necessary to carry a supplemental eraser or in most instances as soon as the eraser is worn from the pencil, the pencil is discarded. This causes a considerable loss, particularly in institutions where a large number of pencils are employed. Applicant has devised an eraser wherein both ends may be used, thus effecting a considerable saving to the user of 1932. Serial No. 622,723.
the pencil without involving additional cost in the manufacture of the pencil-,-
Tn the accompanying drawing wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of n y invention, the numeral 5 designates an oridnary wood pencil having the customary lead 6 disposed therein. This construction is common and forms no part of my invention. Secured to the top of the pencil is a ferrule 7, which ferrule has an enlarged head bifurcated so as to form portions 8 and 9, the bifurcations being caused by the slots 10. Internal grooves 11 and 12 are formed upon each of thebifurcated portions so as to receive annular rings 13 and 14, respectively, of an eraser clamp 16, which is in the form of a ring surrounding an eraser 17 having erasing ends A and B.
The result of this construction is that when a ferrule, such as shown in the drawing is attached to the end of a pencil and an eraser having the clamp 16 attached thereto, is inserted in the bifurcated portion of the ferrule, the rings 13 and 14 will F enter the grooves 11 and 12 and be retained therein. One of the ends will be exposed for use in causing erasures, while the other end will be protected until needed. When needed the clamp 16 is removed from its engagement with the ferrule and reversed, so as to bring the opposite end of the eraser into exposed position. Through this construction it will be noted that there is a very firm con nection between the clamp 16 and portions 8 8 and 9 of the ferrule and therefore the eraser will be effectively held against Weaving action during the process of making an erasure.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same and that various changes relative to the material, size, shape and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim In a device of the character described, a
ferrule adapted to be secured to a pencil, said ferrule having a bifurcated end, grooves formed in said bifurcated end, an eraser having a clamp secured thereabout, said clamp having rings formed thereon, the rings of said clamp serving to engage the grooves of said ferrule for maintaining one end of said eraser housed within said ferrule, and the opposite end of said eraser projecting beyond said ferrule.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
HARRY H. MORRELL.
