Description

J. A. GOODNOUGH.
ROOFING-SCAFFOLD.
No. 191,333. Patented May 29,1877.
NPETERS PHOTO-LITHOGRAPHER. WASHINGTON. D C.
JOSEPH A. GOODNOUGH, OF MOUNT PLEASANT, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN ROOFING'$CAFFOLDS.
I Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 191,333, dated May 29, 1877; application filed March 24, 1877.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOSEPH A. GOODNOUGH, of Mount Pleasant, in the county of Henry and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Device for Supporting Roofing- Scaflolds, which device is fully set forth in the followingspecification and accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a perspective view of said device. Fig. 2 is a side view, and Fig. 3 an end view, of same.
The object of my invention is to furnish an improved device by which the support or scaffold used by workmen to retain their position on roofs may be easily and securely attached to the roof, and as readily detached and removed, as desired, thereby effecting a great saving of time and labor, and avoiding injury to roofs by driving of spikes, as now practiced.
In the drawing, A is the clamp for holding the scantling H. O G are hooks cast upon sides of the clamp A, for attaching to the roof. G is the set-screw for securing thescantling in place. Bis an adjustable arm, with claws D D, and pivoted to the block A by the bolt E, and held at the desired angle by the pin F,
as shown in Fig. 2. The whole is designed to be of cast metal.
The method of using my device is as follows: Two or more of the clamps are attached to a scantling, as shown in Fig. 2, and the arm B is adjusted to the pitch of the roof by means of the pin F; and the whole is placed upon the roof, to which it becomes fastened by the pressure on the scan tling.
I am aware of the patents granted to E. Parker, February 15, 1870, and J. H. Look, Jr., July 11, 1871, and therefore disclaim the construction therein shown; but
What I do claim as new and useful is- An improved device for supporting rootingscafi'olds, consisting of the clamp A, having set-screw G, and provided at its front with spurs or hooks G, in combination with the arm B, having claws D D, and adjustable at different angles through the medium of the pin F, engaging with the holes in the sides of the clamp A, substantially as described.
JOSEPH A. GOODNOUGH.
