With these and other objects in view, as will appear hereinafter, my invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts and portions, as will be hereinafter more particularly described in detail and set forth in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawingsand to the characters of reference thereon, which form a part of this application in which:

My device, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4, consists essentially of aback plate 1, apad holding member 2, a punching member 8, a pivot member 4, and a spring 5. j The back plate 1 forms the mainsupporting member of my device. It is preferably formed as a channel, the bottom of which" extends overtime back side of the pad and the side flanges, designated 1a, enclosing a portion of the side edges of the checks of the pad. This member 2 is preferably made of resilient metal of U-shaped cross section and" is secured in-any suitable manner with. one flange to the bottom of the member 1. The holding member 2 extends transversely across the one end of the member 1 and is adapted to receive between the flanges thereof the head endof a pad ofchecks, that is, the end thereof at which the ends of the checks are fastened together. I The portion 1?) forming the bottom of the member 1 is preferably extended beyond the ends of the flanges 1a and beyond the holding member 2, and is preferably offset downwardly or backwardly forming a ledge 10 which extends the greater distance across the head end of the device but spaced from the side of the device provided with the punching means. At such side of the member 1 the portion 1b is extended straight back without being offset and also beyond the side of the member 1, as shown in Figs. 1 and 4, said extended portion, designated 1d, serving as the die for the punching means. The punch in this instance consists of a lever 3 which is pivotally mounted in-. termediate its ends against the outer side of one of the flanges 1a of the member 1 by the pivot member 4 which in this instance is a rivet. Between the outer head of the rivet and the outer side of the lever 3 and around the shank ,of the rivet is a spacer 6 which retains the lever 3 against the member 1. Around the spacer 6, which is circular in form, is mounted the coil spring 5 the ends of which extend through the sides of the rivet, one end being secured in the lever 3 and the other in the adjacent flange 1w of the member 1. The spring is so arranged that the punching end 8a of the lever is nor-. mally forced from the die portion 1d of the member 1, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 3. The action of the spring is limited by a stop 36 between the pivotal portion of the lever and the punching end thereof, which stop is adapted to engage the upper edge of the flange 1a. The punching end of the lever 3 is provided with a bent portion which extends toward the die portion 1% and which is provided at the turned portion with an inclined shearing punch 30 which is adapted to extend through a correspondingly shaped opening 10 in the die portion 165, as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, for punching holes in the checks 11, shown in Fig. 5, which holes are designated 11a. The angular construction of the punching portion 30 facilitates the punching operation and, when the leveris in the dotted line position, serves as a guide to facilitate the introduction of the edge of a check between the punch and the die. It will be noted that the check is preferably laid with one edge on the ledge 10 which edge is also placed between the punch and die portion.
The opposite end of the lever 3 is provided with a flattened outwardly bent portion 3d whereby the operation of depressing the lever is facilitated. It will be noted that whether the lever is free, as shown by dotted lines, or depressed, as shown by solid lines, the whole structure is very compact and can be very readily placed in the pocket.
The checks, when secured together in the form of a pad, may be fastened together by a staple 12 at the middle portion of one end. This staple, when projecting slightly above the upper side of the pad, serves as an efficient lock when the pad is in position, such portion of the staple extending to an elongated slot 2?) in the holding member 2. If desired, there may be provided at one side of the back plate member 1 a resilient pencil holding clip 21 so that the pencil will be held in connection with the pad at all times ready for use.
In the modification shown in Figs. 6, 7 8 and 9, the holding means for the pad of checks is substantially the same as that previously described, but the punching means here consists of a plunger instead of a lever as in the other construction. In the structure shown in Figs. 6, 7, 8 and 9, the supporting and guiding ledge 10 for the edge of the check preparatory to punching or perforating the same extends preferably com- ,letely across the head end of the back plate T and may be made slightly wider. In this ledge, at the punching side of the device is also a die portion into which is adapted to extend from the front or upper side of the ledge a plunger 31. This plunger is reciprocally mounted in a frame 32 which is provided at its inner end with an angular portion 320 for securing the frame by rivets and 34 tothe side flange 11; and the bottom of the back plate. The portion extending outwardly from the securing portion consists of a bottom plate portion 32b and an upper plate portion 320 between and in e which the plunger 31 is reciprocally n1ounted. Around the plunger and between said plate portions is positioned a compression spring 35 which is adapted to be compressed by a pin 36 extending through the plunger and normally engaging the inner side of the upper plate portion. The bottom and top plate portions 326 and 320 are prefer ably partially enclosed by bending a portion of the frame around the plunger and spring between the plate portions, as shown in Figs. 6, 7, 8 and 9. The ledge 10 and the lower plate portion 326 are preferably bent outwardly from each other forming a guide to facilitate the introduction of the edge of the check therebetw een preparatory to punching the same.
In the ledges 10 may be provided a hole 1/ so that the device may be supported or located on a nail, or the like.
Though I have shown and described a particular construction, combination and arrangement of parts and portions, and a certain modification thereof, I do not wish to be limited to this particular construction, combination and arrangement, nor to the modification, but desire to include in the scope of my invention the construction, combination and arrangement substantially as set forth in the appended claims:
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the class described, a check holder comprising a back plate provided at one side with an upwardly extending flange and at one end with a die por- 5 tion in substantially the plane of the back plate and substantially in alignment with the flange, a punching lever pivotally mounted intermediate its ends on said flange and provided at its forward end with a punching portion adapted to engage the die portion, and a spring normally separating the punching portion from the die prtion.
2. In a device of the class described, a check holder comprising a back plate provided at one side with an upwardly extending flange and at one end with a die portion in substantially the plane of the back plate and substantially in alignment with the flange, a punching lever pivotally mounted intermediate its ends on said flange and provided at its forward end with a punching portion adapted to engage the die portion, and a spring normally separat ing the punching portion from the die portion, the punching portion being inclined outwardly and away'from the die portion in a manner to facilitate the introduction of a check between the die portion and the punching portion.
