A CORPORATION OF WEST VIRGINIA TROLLEY WIRE GUARD` SUPPORT Application filed December 23,1931. seran ne. 582.8261
of guard strips at opposite sides of mine` trolley wires, wherever the wire passes over a track or other passageway.
The principalxobject of the invention is to provide a uniquesupport of sectional construction which may be quickly and easily applied to a conventional trolley wire insulator. v
Another object is to provide a novel structure in which the upper ends of hangers for the guards, are provided with `means for holding clamp sections relatively assembled around the insulator. j
A still further object is to provide a construction of exceptionally simple and inexpensive nature, yet'one which will be elfieient and desirable from numerous standpoints.
With. the foregoing in View, the invention resides in the novel subject matter hereinafter described aand claimed, description being accomplished by reference tothe accompanying drawing.
Fig. lis a perspective view partly broken away and in section, showing two of the guard supports applied.
Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view on line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged perspective view of one of the guard supports.
In the drawing above brieiiy described, IV denotes a portion of a conventional trolley wire for a mine, I refers to insulators which support said trolley wire, G denotes the guards at opposite sides of the wire, and S has reference to supports for the guards G, constructed in accordance with the present invention.` Two or more of these supports are used for each pair of guards,
and as they are all of the same construction, a description of one will suffice.
The support S comprises a clamp having a central yoke portion to surround the insulator I, two arm portions projecting in opposite directions from said yoke portion, `and two hangers H depending from said arm portions' and adapted to support the guards G. In the preferred construction,
the clamp is formed from twol horizontally elongated bar-like sections 10 having outwardly bowed, central portions 11 to jointly embrace the insulator I, the portions of said sections 10 which project from the bowedportionsll, being disposed side by side and substantially in contact with-"each other., These ends ofthe sections 10 are snugly received in links12 forming the upper portions ofthehangers II, so that the two clamp 'sections are held in assembled relation, engaged with the" insulator I. Preferably, the upper edges of the clamp sections 10 are formed with notches 18 which receive the links `12 and the portions 14 at the outer sides of` these notches, constitute lugs which prevent said links 12 from accidentally shifting from the clamp.
Each link `12 is preferably formed by* a metal stamping as shown, being formed with an upper relatively `largeopening 15 and a lower smaller opening 16.` Theopenj i ings 15 of the `two links 12, receive vthe ends of the clamp sections 10, and the smaller openings 16 facilitate connection of the low'-V er hanger sections 17, with the upper sections or links 12. Each section 17 may well be formed by a length of heavy insulated wire anchored at one end in the opening 16 and bent to surround the guard G.
In applying the clamp to the insulator I, the two clamp sections are positioned so that their bowed portions 11 jointly surround said insulator, the link 12 of one of the hangers is engaged with the clamp sections at one end of the latter, the other ends of these clamp sections are then pressed together, and the link 12 of the other hanger is then engaged with them. The clamp is thus tightly heldupon the insulator, and the hangers II may be readily connected with `the guards G, by bending them around said guards and fastening their ends, as shown.
The guards, when supported by a number of the supports herein disclosed, serve ef-` fectively to prevent the heads of persons or animals walking under them, from coming in contact with the trolley wire Wand it will be understood that said guards may be mounted wherever advisable.
The details disclosed may be considered as preferred, but within the scope of the invention as claimed, numerous variations may be made.
I claim:-
l. A trolley wire guard support comprising a contractible clamp to surround a trolley wire insulator, and guard-supporting hangers having links at their upper ends for holding said clamp contracted.
2. A trolley wire guard support comprising a clamp to surround a trolley wire insulator, said clamp being divided into two sections adapted to jointly embrace the insulator, and guard supporting hangers having links at their upper ends for holding said clamp sections in assembled relation.
3. A trolley wire guard support comprising tw'o elongated clamp sections having outwardly bowed portions between their ends adapted to jointly sur-round a trolley wire insulator, and guard-supporting hangers having links at their upper-ends receiving the ends of said clamp sections to hold the latter assembled.
4. A trolley wire guard support comprising two elongated clamp sections having outwardly bowed portions between their ends adapted to jointly surround a trolley wire insulator, and guard-supporting hangers having links at their upper ends receiving the ends of said clamp sections to hold the latter assembled, said ends of said clamp sections being provided with lugs preventing accidental movement of said links therefrom.
In testimony whereor1 I affix my signature. Y
OKEY E. NICHOLS.
