patented June 6, 1933 a UNITED STATES ROLAND A. FURLONG, or noonnsrnn. NEW am noosn LEAF nonnnn Application filed January 21,193i1. SeriallNo. 510,158.
This invention relates to an improved loose leaf holder which is convenient in use and is of such construction as to permit it to be readily filed for ready reference when {not in use.
quirements of nurses in hospitals, delivery clerks, and. the like. Such a holder is formed with a front and back cover so as to protect the sheets and the front cover is capable of-movement of 360 to engage the back face of the back cover and permit the binder to be laid fiat on a flat surface to facilitate writing. In accordance with the im provements this function is accomplished by 5 employing a double hinge between the front and back covers. Another consideration is to provide such a holder of simple and inexpensive form with suitable spring retain ing means for the loose leaves whereby they may be readily inserted and removed. The
improved retaining means in the present invention are of simple construction and are ofsuch form as to constitute pintles for certain of the hinges. Inorderto permit the filing of the improved holders in either a vertical file or fiatwise, a card holder is carried with the back cover and is adapted to receive a slip bearing a name which name is visible when the holder is filed vertically or laid fiatwise, as on a shelf.
These and other characteristics are afwill be described in connection with the embodiment illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary view in plan of the improved holder.
Figure 2 isa view in cover thrown back 90.
Figure 3 is afragmentary sectional view on the plane indicated by the line 3-3 of Figure l and looking in the direction of the arrows. Figure 4 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on the plane indicated by the line 4l4 of Figure I and looking in the direction of the arrows, the action of the double hinge when the top cover is thrown back being indicated by dotted lines.
igure 5 is a view in end elevation showplan with the top Holders of this kind meet rethrough "the aligned .Throughthe other aligned hinge elements '6, respectively. The
ing two ofthe improved holders laid fiatwise on one another and exposing the names.
The improved holder consists of a back plate a and a top plate 6 which are preferably of stiff material such as metal for durability, to aflord protection to the loose leaves,to facilitatefiling, and to afford a firm writing surface. These two plates are hinged together by a double hinge. This may be formed inexpensively bystamping and forming hinge elements a on the plate a and other hinge elements I) on the plate b which lie ,opposite the hinge elements a. In between these pairs of hinge pieces a, b, are placed continuous hingeelements chav ing portions in alignment, respectively, with the. elements al, 6. Hinge pintles d extend hinge elements 6, 0.
a,'0 mayextend the legs 6 of colled springs outer ends of the legs e are bentand liookedunder the back cover plate a while the inner ends of the springs e are securedtoa retaining bar f for the loose leavesl This retaining bar may be formed with non-metallic friction pads fnformore effective engagement with the loose leaves.
The actionof thesprings e is to urge the re retaining members f, ftowards the back plate a thereby yieldingly clamping the loose leaves in place. forded by the improved construction which The back plate a has secured thereto a name plate holder 9 which extends beyond its rear'edge. In this holder may be inserted remo vably a name car 72, to indicate the user of the holder. The card holder g may be of any form suitable for the particular service to which the binder is put. It is preferred, however, to have it present the name card at an angle to the binder, 9 as illustrated. When the binder is placed vertically for vertical filing the name card of all of the binders in the group will be exposed to view. Similarly, if desired, the name card may be turned upside down when- 9 the binders are to be laid flat for filing in a stack as illustrated in Figure 5. In this case, every card is visible and is not hidden from View by any of the other binders or their name cards. a
' cheapness ease of filing temporarily or permanently.
prising top and bottom hinge the plates together When a card holder is carried with the back plate a as shown it is necessary that the cover plate I) shall be cut out as at b so as not to interfere with free hinging. movement of the top plate nor with the re-- taining means 7", f, for the loose leaves.
In use, the top plate I) may be thrown back through an angle of 360 as illustrated in Figure 4 in which case it presents a flat supporting surface which will rest flatwise on a table for convenient writing on the loose sheet exposed to View. It is understood that the sheets are retained removably in place on the back plate a by'means of the spring-pressed holders f The double hinge permits this relationship of parts as between the top plate 1) and the bottom plate a. When the binder is to be filed, as for instance when the user goes ofi duty, it may be placed in a vertical position along with other binders as, for instance, in a filing cabinet, and the names of the users will all be exposed to view. If the holders are to be filed flatwise, as on a shelf, the name cards will be exposed to view towards the front of the shelf as shown in Figure 5. If preferred, the binders may be hung up on a suitable nail or peg provided for the purpose, an opening a being formed in the bottom plate near the upper edge, for that purpose.
The improved loose leaf holder is characterized by simplicity of construction,
of cost, convenience in use, and
Changes in details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention so long as the advantages described are accomplished by equivalent means.
What I claim is:
A holder for the purpose described complates, means to along one'edge and a flat card holder carried by one of said plates at said hinged edge and inclined at an angle to the plane of said plate.
This specification signed this 20th day 7 of January K. D. 1931.
