KEY LOCKING LOCK Filed May 24, 1932 Patented May 16, 1933 UNITED STATES 'NAJEEIB J'. SAAD, F SPOKANE, WASHINGTON KEY LOCKING LOCK Application filed. May 24,
,My invention relates to key locking locks and certain objects of theinvention. are to provide a lock having means whereby a key that is used to lock and unlock doors of lockers, closets and the like is caught and retained in the lock when a door is unlocked and 1s thus prevented from being removed or wlthdrawn from the lock except by means of a second key which may be in the custody of an official or other authorized person. The device is particularly adapted for use in checking rooms and the like and by its use keys may be safely left in the locks of doors while they are unlocked thus obviating the necessity of turning the keys over to an official each time the lockers are used, or eliminating the necessity of carrying the keys around and the consequent danger of losing the keys.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of the novel construction, adaptation, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed. These objects are accomplished by the devices illustrated in the accompanying drawing; wherein: Figure 1 is a view in per-- spective showing a lock with its casing cover removed and embodying the features of the invention; Fig. 2 is a view in vertical sec-- tion taken substantially on a broken line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a fragmentary detail view in elevation showing a key in its movement ast the key locking means when a door is locked by the main locking bolt; and Fig. 4 i is a corresponding view showing the key locked by the key locking means when a door is unlocked.
Referring to the drawing throughout which like reference numerals indicate like 9 parts, the numeral 5 designates a lock casing having a cover member 6 secured thereto and and a locking bolt 7 and sliding levers 8 mounted therein with the usual actuating springs 9. A key 10 is adapted to be inserted into a keyhole 11 and used for locking and unlocking the look when the key is turned to the left or right to slidably move the levers and the bolt in the usual manner. The foregoing elements form no part of my invention but necessarily enter into combination there- 1932. Serial N0. 613,173.
with. It will however be understood that said elements may be of any form, arrangement and combination that will function in the operation of my inventionwhich will now be'described. Essentially my invention comprises a lever member 12 with a cylinder 13 fixed to its loW- er end andpivoted within the lower portion of the casing'5'4; Said cylinder is provided wlth -a keyrecess 14 that is adapted to receive a second key 15, as shown in Fig. 2, when same is passed into a hole 16 through the casing. A-leaf spring 1 7,fixedto said cylinder and bearing against a side of the casing, is adapted to normally retain said lever member in avertical position against a stop pin 18 fixed to the casing. A jaw 19 is: fixed to the upper end portion of the lever 12 and a corresponding jaw 20 is pivoted at 21 to said lever a short distance below the fixed jaw. The outer ends of said aws project in a direction toward the keyholell and areoppositely bev'eled, or in other words the fixed jaw 19 has its end beveled downwardly and outwardly while the pivoted jaw 20 has its end beveled upwardly and outwardly. The pivoted jaw maybe slightly longer than the fixed aw if desired, anda small leaf spring. 22 normally retains Y the pivoted jaw in parallel spaced relation with the fixed jaw and against a stoppin 23 fixed tothe lever member. 9 V
lVhen locking a door to which thedevice is fixedthe key'lO is turned to the left, or counter clockwise, in the regular manner as indi catedby the direction arrow in Fig. 3. In its turning movement to the left said key engages the outer beveled end of the pivoted jaw 20 pivotally raising said jaw, overcomin the tension of the small leaf spring 22 and forcing said pivotedv jaw against the fixed jaw 19 whereby the key is prevented from being caught between said two jaws as will be understood. In its continued movement to the left and in engagement with the outer beveled end of the pivoted jaw 20, the lever member 12 is pivota11y m ved' backagainst the tension of the leaf spring 17'and when the key passes said lever member the leaf'springs 17 r and 22 will return said lever member and its pivoted jaw 20 to their respective normal positions. The key then passes on tothe left engaging the sliding levers 8 and thus causing the bolt 7 to move to the outward or locked position.
Referring now to Fig. 4:, in unlocking the door to which the device is secured, the key is turned to the right, or clockwise, in the regular manner as indicated by the direction arrow. Assuming that the key has already moved the bolt 7 inwardly whereby the door is unlocked, said key will then, in its continued movement to the right, engage the beveled end of the fixed jaws l9 and thus pivotally move the lever member 12 back to the dotted position against the spring 17. Then in its continued movement to the right the key will be lodged or caught by the outer projecting end of the pivoted jaw and the spring 17 will forthwith move the lever member 12 back to its vertically normal position thus catching and locking the key between the jaws 19 and 20. Now in order to remove the key 10 from the lock it is necessary to again move the lever member 12 to the right to release the key from the jaws and this is done by inserting the second key 15 into the recess 14: of the cylinder 13. The second key may be in the custody of a check room ofiicial or other authorized person and it will now be apparent that, by means of my device, keys may be safely left in thelocks of closet or locker doors when the doors are left in the open or unlocked position.
Having thus described my invention, it being understood that minor changes in its construction and arrangement may be resorted to without departing from the scope and spirit of the invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. The combination with a lock comprising a bolt operable by a key for slidably moving the bolt to the locked and unlocked positions,
of key locking means comprlsing a lever member pivotally mounted within the lock and having a recess adapted to receive a second key, a beveled jaw fixed to the free end of the lever member, a spring actuated jaw pivotally connected to the lever in normally spaced apart relation with the fixed jaw, a spring arranged to normally retain the lever in a position whereby its jaws are engageable by the first key and whereby said lever and jaws are moved out of the way when the first key is turned to lock the bolt, and said jaws adapted to catch and retain the first key after it is turned to unlock the bolt and whereby it is necessary to move said lever by means of a second key inserted in its recess in order to release the first key.
2. In a key locking lock comprising a bolt operable by a key for slidably moving the bolt to the locked and unlocked positions, the combination of key locking means comprising a lever member having a cylinder fixed to one end and a beveled jaw fixed to its other end, said cylinder pivoted within the lock and having a recess adapted to receive a second key, another beveled jaw pivoted to the lever, a spring with means for retaining the pivoted jaw normally in parallel spaced apart relation from the fixed jaw, another spring arranged to normally retain the lever with its jaws in engageable relation with the first key and whereby said jaws arem-oved out of the way by the first key when it is turned to lock the bolt, and said jaws adapted to catch and retain the first key after it is turned to unlock the bolt and whereby it is necessary to move said lever member by means ot a second key inserted in the recess of its cylinder in order to release the first key.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature.
