This invention relates generally to apparatus for cleansing various articles by scrubbing and rinsing, operations, and comprehends a device which, while not necessarily restricted to such use, is particularly designed for washing tableware or culinary implements.
Broadly, the invention aims to provide a device of the indicated character, by virtue of which scrubbing with a liquid cleansing solution and rinsing of the articles being cleansed, may be rapidly, thoroughly and effectually accomplished.
The invention further resides in the provision of an improved device of this class, which embodies scrubbing and rinsing means sorelated that the removal of the articles from the scrubbing means exposes them automatically to the action of the rinsing means.
More specifically, the invention contemplates an improved device for washing and rinsing dishes or analogous articles, which essentially embodies a pair of contiguous parallel rotary scrubbing elements between which the articles are passed, together with means for projecting a rinsing spray onto the surfaces of said articles as they are removed from between the scrubbing elements.
The invention furthermore resides in the provisionof a washing and rinsing device equipped with means for mixing and supplying a cleansing medium to the scrubbing elements.
The invention further aims to provide means for removably mounting and associating the scrubbing elements with thedevice sothat they may be removed and replaced when worn. J
As a still further object, the invention 'comprehends a device of the character set forth which employs few and simple parts capable of economical production and assembly, to afford a compact and durable structure which is highly eflicient in its purpose.

Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, 10 designates a base provided at one end with a water tight casing or housing 11 and at the opposite end with av pair of laterally spaced upstanding brackets 12. The casing 11" houses an electric motor 13, the
shaft 14 of which has secured thereto a worm 15 which meshes with a worm pinion 16 on a stub shaft 17. The stub shafthas secured thereto a gear pinion 18 which meshes with meshed gears 19 and 20 the shafts 21 and 22 of which are journaled in the inner Wall 23 V of the casing or housing 11, and which shafts 21 and 22 extend through and project from the wall 23 and are provided with tubular exteriorly disposed extremities 24 and 25. The extension cord 26 leads from the motor within the casing or housing 11 and is provided with the usual form of attachment plug 27 for plugginginto a source of supply to drive the motor and gear train. A pair of rotary cylindrical brushes designated generally by the reference characters A and B is provided, and said brushes each include a shaft 30. Eachshaft is provided with a substantially cylindrical ma or set of radial bristles 31 and an axiall spaced minor setof bristles 32at one end of the shaft, the latter being arranged to form brushes having substantially semi-spherical ends. The portions of the shafts 30 which are exposed between the bristle sets are removably mounted in bearings 33 provided at the upper ends of I the brackets 12, and, if desired, retaining pins 34 are associated with the bearings 33 to prevent accidental displacement of the shafts from the bearings. The ends of the shafts opposite to the ones which carry the set of bristles 32 are designed to removably lit within the tubular extremities 24 and 25 of the gear shafts 21 and 22, and a suitable coupling therebetween is established to cause the brushes A and B to be driven by the motor and gear train in the direction indicated by the arrows. Thiscoupling may consist of a bayonet slot in each of the extremities 24 and 2-5 and co-operating pins in each of the shafts 30. This provides a pair of rotary parallel contiguous scrubbing brushes or elements A- and B, between which the articles such as plates, saucers, pans or the like, may be passed to subject the same to a scrubbing action, while cups, bowls, tumblers or the like may be positioned over the bristle sets 32 at the ends of the brushes A and B. The brackets 12 are also provided with supporting arms 35 and 36, which support a pair of spray pipes 37 and 38 respectively disposed over and parallel to the brushes A and B. These spray pipes, 37 and 38, are arranged as shown, in order to direct the flow of a fluid, such as clear water direct from the supply, toward the brushes and from opposite directions so that the sprays meet on a line on the tangential plane between and common to the brushes to cause the fluid to spray substantially tangentially upon the brushes at and adjacent their contiguous peripheral portions substantially in the directionof movement of the brushes. The spray pipes are respectively connected at one end with a common intake 39 which leads from the outlet 40 of a threeway valve casin 41, which is also provided with an upward y directed outlet 42 having mounted within the casing for selectively directing water from its inlet 45 to the outlet 40 or simultaneously to the outlets 40 and 42.- The inlet 45 of the valve casing joins a T-coupling 46, and one branch of the T-coupling is connected with aflexible conduit 47 which leadsto a water supply, such as a faucet, a faucet engaging nipp e 48 being provided at the free extremity thereof. The remaining branch 49 of theT-coupling leads to and extends through the cover 50 of a mixing vessel 51 which contains a cleansing substance with which the water supply to the vessel is f adapted to be mixed and the solution'discharged through an outlet conduit 52 extend ing t rough the cover 50 and communicating with a discharge pipe 53 which is supported by the bracket arm 36, the discharge pipe 53 eztendin alongside of and parallel to the brush B slow the spray pipe 38.
In use and operation, the device is placed in a sink, the conduit attached to the faucet and the attachment pluginsert in an outlet. With the brushes A and'B rotating in the directions indicated by the arrows and the a spray head 43. A rotary valve core 44 is I mortise water flowing from the faucet, it is apparent that a soapy solution will be supplied di= rectly to the brush B- and indirectly to the brush A, while a clear rinsing water will be supplied to the spray pipes 37 and 38 and the spray head 43 if the valve core 44 is turned to permit. T he plates, saucers, pans or other articles of this character are passed between the rotating bristle sets 31 of the brushes A and B downwardly to permit the bristles to act thereupon, together with the soapy cleansing water, and are thence drawn upwardly, thus insuring the removal of all foreign matter from the surfaces thereof. As the articles are withdrawn upwardly from between the bristle sets 31, they will be acted upon by the water sprayed from the spray pipes 37 and 38, to rinse oi the soapy solution. It will thus be seen that in one operation the articles are thoroughly cleansed and rinsed and the water sprayed from the spray pipes '37 and 38 being sprayed over and between the brushes will wash and cleanse the brushes of matter gathered thereon from the articles.
The bowls, cups, tumblers or other similar articles are positioned over the bristle sets 32 to act upon both the interior and exterior surfaces thereof, the soapy solution zirom the pipe 53 being supplied to the bristle sets 32. After the washing of these articles, the spray head 43 may be employed for rinsing the same.
It is to be understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details, but that variations and modifications which properly fall within the scope of the claims may be resorted to when desired.
What is claimed is:
1. A dish-washing device having the combination of a pair of rotary scrubbing brushes mounted horizontally in substantially the same plane upon parallel axes with the peripheries of said brushes in contiguous relation and between which the articles to be cleansed are passed, means for rotating the left-hand brush of said pair in a clockwise direction and the right-hand brush of said pair in a counter-clockwise direction, means adjacent one of said brushes for applying a cleansing medium to the upper portion thereof, and means located above said brushes for spraying a fluid over and between the brushes or washing and cleansing the brushes and articles and for rinsing the articles as they are withdrawn from between the brushes.
2. A dish-washing device having the combination of a pair of rotary scrubbing brushes mounted' horizontally in substantially the till I direction and the right-hand-brush of said bers located in a plane above said last mentions, and

3. A dish washing, device having the combination of a pair of rotary scrubbing brushes mounted in substantially the same plane upon parallel axes with the peripheries'of said rushes in contiguous relation between which the articlesto be cleansed are passed, means I for rotating the brushes in opposite directions, means for spraying a rinsing fluid upon upon the articles as they are withdrawn from between the brushes, said means includin a air of spray elements having confronting laces, said spray elements being spaced apart from each" other and the brushes and having opening in the confronting faces thereof to direct the fluid from the spray elements toward the brushes and in opposite directions to meet on a line on the tangential plane between and common to both brushes to cause the fluid to spray substantially tangentially upon the brushes. substantially in the direction of movement of said brushes at and adjacent the contiguous peripheral portions thereof.
