BED LIGHT Application fi led August 21, 1930. Serial No. 476,742.
This invention relates to improvements in bed lights and has for an object the provision of a built in cavity in the head of a bed adapted to contain a light which may be utili'zed for any purpose desired.
Another object is to provide a cover for this cavity having end shields, which may be opened to any desired degree thereby giving and desired area of illumination, the end shields preventing any light extending beyond either side of the bed to disturb other sleepers in the same room.
Another object is to provide a switch'to cooperate with thecover, turningv current on when this cover is opened and oft when it is closed.
Other objects will be apparent from the following specification, and while the invention is disclosed as relating more particularly to beds it is not limited thereto as it may be applied to other kinds of furniture as well.
Referring to the drawing Figure 1 is a view of a bed having one embodiment of the invention;
Figure 2 is a view, partly in section, along the line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a view, partly in section, of a metallic bed havinga'frame of square section corataining an embodiment of the invention; an
Figure 4 shows a variation of the invention as incorporated in a bed of round section.
In Figure 2, a section 10 of the head of a bed is shown which may be made of any desired materials An opening 11 is provided into which is suitably secured a housing 12. A suitable socket (not shown) is secured to one end 13 and is adapted to support a lamp 1 1. A switch15 is mounted, preferably within the housing 12, and its actuating stem 16 is so located that when the door 17 is closed it pushes against the stem 16 turn ing oil the light. As soon as the door 17 is opened the stem 16 is released, thereby turning on the li ht.
The door 1 is suitabl hinged at 1 8 and each end is provided wit a series of shields 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24 which are pivoted on each other at 25.
A shield plate 19 is secured to the cover 16 and has a slot 26 therein which cooperates with a stud 27 in the shield 20. As soon as the end oi slot 26 engages the stud 27, the pull is impartedto the shield 20. The other shields with their slots and studs work similarly, and the innermost shield 24 has slot 32 cooperating with a stud 31 which is .secured to the end 13 of the housing 12. This stud 31 acts as a stop a'ndis the extreme limit of the movementof the cover 17 in which case the cover assumes the position shown dottedat 17 a.
An insulating bushing 28 is provided in the housing 12 through which an electric cord 29 is passed. This cord is connected in series with the switch 15 and the lamp socket and has a plug 30 on itsother endadapted to be connected to a source of power.
The variation shown in Figure 3 is the same except that the square or rectangular actuating stem 16 is also mounted on this plate.
A cylindrical member 34 containing a glass insert 35 is provided and secured thereto is a stud 36 which works in a clearance slot (not shown). As shown in Figure 4 the light 14 is burning and shines through the glass insert 35.
Upon rotating the cylinder clockwise as viewed in Figure 4 the edge 37 of the cylin-. drical member 34 gradually passes over and covers the opening 32 and just as the opening 32 is completely covered the stud 36 has pushed the stem 16 in thereby actuating the switch 15 and turningthe current off. The reverse of this operation uncovers the opening 32 and turns the switch on. As in the vother embodiments above described suitable electrical connections may be provided to a suitable ower supply.
Stuitadle rings 38 are provided to prevent the cylindrical member 34 from moving endwise.
The glass 35may be omitted from the member 34 without affecting the results obtained.
I claim In combination a bed having a head panel, a lamp housin having a U shaped cross section mounted in and havin its open face substantially flush with the ront surface of said a lamp horizontally disposed within said housing, a door hinged to said housing at the top thereof adapted when opened to direct light from said lamp downwardl on to said bed, and tapered interlockin en sit-ioned at each end of said oor for limitln the width of the light falling upon the be substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
