Description

VISION SHIELD Filed May 7, 1931 I nvenio, 7
Patented May 2, 1933 PATENT OFFICE UNITED: V-SIIATES MARY EIIEURCBQOF BELMONT, MASSACHUSETTS VISION SHIELD 'Application filed May 7, 1931. Serial. No. 535,651.
This invention aims to provide a novel vision shield for use in any case to cut off the vision or to protect the eyes and face from injury as in mechanical or chemical lines of work; and particularly to be used by students of the piano and organ to shield the view of the keyboard from the eyes and thus reduce the temptation to focus the eyes thereon instead of on the music.
In the drawing of one form of my invention selected for illustration and description,
Fig. 1 is a plan; Fig. 2, a plan of the shield collapsed; Fig. 3, a side View of the shield as use a student; and
Fig. 4,
dby
a partial view of amodified form particularly adapted for use in dangerous occupations.
Referring first to Fig. 1, my novel vision shield comprises a shield member 1 of cardboard or other suitable material, provided at opposite side edges with straps 2 secured to the shield in any convenient manner, as by eyelets 3. The ends of the straps 2 pass about the neck of the wearer, Fig. ,3, and may be secured by any convenient means, as a buckle 4.
Preferably also, the straps 2 are adjustably connected as by a tie strap 5 and buckle 6 to the shield 1 at another point-to-efl'ect the desired degree of pitch of the shield when in position, and increase its stability when in use.
To provide increased shielding effect laterally, when desired, the member 1 has pivoted thereto on each side edge one or more wing members 7, the forwardend of the wing being guided in proper relation 8, engaging a slot 9 in the wing 7. By this means the width of the shield may be adjusted as desired. 1
In use the ribbons or straps'2 are adjusted about the neck of the student at the desired height and angle so that the keyboard immediately in front of him is hidden'and thus the inclination to watch the same is overcome and he may more easily give his entire attention to the reading of the music.
the shield parts.
to the memher 1 by an eyelet or other suitable member Obviously the shield may be used for other purposes where it is advantageous. For instance, in the mechanical and chemical arts many times, during certain working operations and experiments, it is necessary to protect the eyes and face. I
In such case the shield may be made, if deslred, with one or more glass or other transparent, windows 12 with guides 13 in which slidealso opaque covers 1 1 so will protect the face and at the same time permit one to see beneath the shield if desired, or cover the window and use the shield so covered.
The member 1 maybe constructed in two parts and hinged at 10 so that it may be 001- lapsed for packing for transportation if desired, and held open by buttons 11 on one of My invention is not restricted to the particular embodiment thereof described and illustrated. I claim: 1. A vision shield comprising a multi-part main shield member with a chest conforming inner edge hingedfor folding, and having buttons for keeping the members in opened position and provided with extension wings movably secured thereto at its inner corners, and suspending straps at a plurality of points on the main member to pass around the neck of the wearer to hold the member in adjusted and balanced position on the chest to shield from the eyes piano keys and the like covered a by the shield.
2. A vision shield to be suspended from the neck and above'the hands of the wearer to shield piano keys and the like from sight, comprising a main shield member, suspending straps thereon, a substantially sector shaped wing member pivotally secured to the shield near a side edge thereof, a guiding and connecting member between the shield and wing member permitting parallel relative action thereof to broaden the shielding area progressively toward its outer end.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
MARY E. CHURCH.
