Description

April 25, 1933. YOUNG 1,905,570
DEVICE FOR SECURING BROOM HEADS- TO THEIR STICKS Filed Sept. 9, 1931 A T OEAEK Patented Apr. 25, 1933 UNITED STATES ELIJ'AH ALFRED YOUNG, F JOHANNESIBURG, UNION OF SOUTH AFRICA.
DEVICE FOR SECURING BROOM HEADS TO THEIR STICKS Application filed September 9, 1931. Serial No. 561,888.
The object of my invention is to enable the user of a broom to secure the handle firmly in the head of the broom by giving the handle a few turns, and to release the handle from the broom head, by giving the handle a few turns in the reverse direction.
The invention and the manner ofperforming the same is fully described with reference to the accompanying drawing in which similar letters refer to corresponding parts in all the figures, and wherein Fig. 1 is a front view showing the broom head A, broom handle 13, spiral spring coil G, steel wires D and E, and peg or screwF.
Fig. 2 is an end view.
Fig. 3 is a plan.
Steel wires D and E are welded together on the horizontal position on each side of the aperture of the spiral spring coil G through which the handle is inserted. The top two rounds of the spiral spring coil C are welded together so as to strengthen the entrance to the aperture.
The falling ends of the steel wires D and E are bent so as to form hooks to hold the head of broom as shown in end elevation Fig. 2. A peg or screw F is inserted into handle of broom preferably between the Welded rounds at the aperture, and the next round of the spiral spring coil.
By turning the handle left or right in accordance with the construction of the spiral spring coil, the peg or screw as the case may he travels downward through the coil,
and tightens broom handle in head; the handle is loosened by turning in the reverse direction.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention, and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. Means for securing a handle to a broom head comprising a symmetrical pair of wire rods each bent substantially U shape and both formed with horizontal median portions united to each other, the remainder of the two Wire rods being side limbs which are angularly spread, hooks at the free ends of all of said side limbs adapted to engage under the broom head, a circular ring formed in the centre of the united median portion of said wire rods, a coiled wire rod united to said ring coaxial therewith and depending therefrom and adapted to receive thehandle of the broom, and a radial projection being driven into the handle of the broom adapted to travel along the convolutions of said coiled wire rod.
2. Means for securing a handle to a broom head comprising a pair of wire rods each of substantially U configuration united to each other at their median parts, hooks at the free extremities of both of said U shaped wire rods adapted to provide two pairs of abutments to engage under both longitudinal edges of the broom head, a coil of wire united to the junction of the two substantially U shaped members so as to constitute 7 a socket, and a member adapted to be fitted substantially radially on the handle as a i lateral pin like projection adapted to travel along the convolutions of the coil of wire, said coil of wire receiving the handle of the 7 broom.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
Dated this 1st day of August 1931.
' ELIJAH ALFRED YOUNG.
