April 1933. L. PROPP DECORATIVE DEVICE Filed Sept. 28, 1932 ATTORNEY 14 $1 m e o 'E'QRK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO NQ-IMA ELECTE-IL' C9111.
W YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK DECORATIVE DEVICE Application filed September 28, 1932. Serial No. 635,176.
This invention relates to decorative devices. It is particularly directed to an ornamental lighting unit for dressing Christmas trees, and the like decorative or display purposes.
An object of this invention is to provide a device of the character described having highly improved means for supporting a plurality of lamp sockets on a decorative device.
A further object of this invention is to provide in a device of the character described, highly improved means for illuminating a legend or design on said device.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a strong. compact and neat decorative lighting outfit of the character described, which shall comprise comparatively few and simple parts, be easy to assemble 8 and mount on a Christmas tree or other support, which shall be comparatively inexpensive to manufacture, attractive in appear ance, and nevertheless practical and eilicient to a high degree.
5 Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out. i
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described, and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the following claims.
In the accompanying drawing, in which is shown one of the various possible illustrative embodiments of this invention,
Fig. 1 is a front elevational view of a device embodying the invention mounted on the top of a Christmas tree;
Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view taken on line 33 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view taken on line H of Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is a cross-sectional view taken on line 55 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 6 is a cross-sectional view taken on 50 line 66 of Fig. 1,
Referring now in detail to the drawing, 10 designates a decorative lighting unit or device embodying theinvention, here shown for the purpose of illustration only, as being mounted on the top portion 11 of a Christmas tree. The member 10 is made of front and rear mating seetions'l2 and 13 assembled in the manner hereinafter described.
The sections 12 and13 may be made as counterparts, and assembled together in s mmetrical relation, as will appear hereina ter. The section 12 may be constructed of a single piece of stamped or die pressed sheet metal, and comprises a portion 15, here shown for the purpose of illustration only, as having five radially extending fingers or extensions 16, and shaped on the outer face thereof to display a five point star. I
At the end of each of the extensions 16, is a transverse substantially semi-circu'lar'portion'18 of beaded shape for the purpose hereinafter appearing, forming fingers 18a bentout of the plane of the portion 15. The por tion of the member 12 may be provided with any suitable cut out legend, design or display element 23, for example Merry Christmas as shown in the drawing.
Extending from the portion 15 at portions 24 thereon between the extensions 16, are small bent over radial clips or tabs 25 forminginwardly extending pockets 25a, there being, in the illustration, five such clips. Supported by said clips is a thin sheet 26 preferably of colored translucent material, such as crepe paper, entirely covering the legend or cut out portions 23, said sheet 26 preferably having the edge portions thereof inserted within the pockets 25a and gripped by the clips. The sheet 26 thus serves as a background for the legend or cut out portion 23.
The section 13 is substantially similar to the section 12 and is symmetrically disposed with respect thereto. Extending from each of the members 12 and 13 substantially at one of the portions 24 thereof, is an elongated, radially extending portion 30 of curved, transverse cross-section. When the members 12 and 13 are attached together, the
portions 30 are adapted to grip the upper end 11 of a Christmas tree for mounting the device 10 thereon. Said jaw members 30 are somewhat resilient and serve as clamps for mounting the device 10 on any suitable rod or support received therebetween.
Means is provided for attaching the members 12 and 13 together in spaced, substantially parallel relation. To this end the member 12 may be formed with a plurality of inwardly fianged' tubular portions 40, there preferably being three such flanges located on the jaw portion 30'thereof and on spaced points on the portions 15 thereof. The flanges 40 may be formed. with internal screw threads. The member 13, however, is formed with openings 41.aligned with the openings of the flanges 40. Screws 42 extend through each of the openings 41, the outer threaded ends of said screws being screwed to the threaded openings of the flanges 40. 1
Mounted on said device 10 area plurality of lamp sockets 21 connected in series circuit by wiring 32, there being one socket between each of the pair of mating portions 18, and one socket disposed between a pair choppesite portions 15 of said members 12 and 13. Said sockets 21 are preferably miniature sockets for receiving low voltage, decorative, preferably tapered, lamps 34, and are formed with beads 340 received in the beaded portions of semi-circular portions 18 of the extension. The tapered lamps are preferably used on the fiveextensions whereby the ornament simulates the star of Bethlehem. For supporting the socket disposed between the portions'15, a piece of wire 43 may be coiled at one end thereof about the screw 42 passing through the jaws 30, said wire having a circular ring portion 44 at the upper end thereof receiving said socket therethrough. Said socket between the portions 15, is provided with a lamp 35 disposed between the sheets 26 so that when said lamp is illuminated, the sheets 26 will serve as illuminated backgrounds for the cut out portions or legends 23. The design or legend will thus be illuminated, producing a highly attractive, illuminated, decorative device. The piece of wire 43 may of course, be omitted and the socket between portions 15 held in place merely by the wiring connecting the same with the other sockets.
It will thus be seen that there is provided a device in which the several objects of this invention are achieved, and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.
As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiment set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawing is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense,
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A decorative device of the character described comprising a pair of substantially similar and symmetrically disposed members, each having a plurality of extensions,
