Description

April 25, 1933. w. B. SUTHERLAND BRAKE SHOE Filed May 18, 1951 g 4 Je gl y iT f Patented pr. 25, 1933 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE WALLACE '.B. SUTHERLAND, OF SUFFERN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO THE AMERICAN BRAKE SHOE AND FOUNDRY COMPANY,
TION OF DELAWARE F WILMINGTON, DELAWARE, A GOIRJPORA.-v
BRAKE SHOE Application filed May 18,
This invention relates to brake shoes and more particularly to those cast iron shoes which are provided with reenforce backs and which may or may not be provided U with inserts in the wearing face.
One of the objects of the invention is to rigidly secure the cast iron body to the reenforce back.
Another object of the invention is to provide an auxiliary back fastened to the reenforce back and having portions thereof bent downwardly and embedded in the body to effectively secure the body to the back.
I have shown the invention in a car shoe having a ductile metal back commonly called a steel back, an auxiliary back attached to the steel back, and a solid cast iron body, and referring thereto Fig. 1 is a side 'elevation of the brake shoe.
Fig. 2 is a back plan view showing the auxiliary back in broken lines.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3--3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line 4 4 25 of Fig. 1 and showing the bending line of the flanges on the auxiliary back intersecting the recesses in the side edges of the auxiliary back.
Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 4 but showing the bending line of the flanges of the auxiliary back tangent to the recesses in the side edges of the auxiliary back.
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary perspective view A .showing another form of the back.
Referring to the drawing, 6 is the body, 7 is the ductile metal back and 8 is an auxiliary back. The auxiliary back may be fastened to the steel back by use of one or more rivets 9 or by spot welding,'bolts, or any other fastening means. The auxiliary back 8 has a plurality of recesses 10 in the marginal side edges thereof which are bent on a line intersecting the recesses 10 as shown in Figs. 2 and 4, or tangent to the recesses as shown in Fig. 5, forming discontinuous ianges 1l which are embedded in the body and are interlockingly engaged therewith. The recesses are substantially circular in shape and open through the edges of the auxiliary back.Y The back 7 has its mar- 1931. serial No. 538,162.
ginal side edge portions bent downwardly to form continuous anges 12 which enclose the adjacent corners of the body. The recesses l0 in the marginal side edges of the auxiliary back may be omitted and the flanges on the auxiliary back may be made continuous between the attaching lug and thel ends of theshoe as shown by the flange 13, Fig. 6. Openings 14 are provided in the back 7, Fig. 3, and recesses 15 are provided in the auxiliary back 8 to permit the body metal to flow therethrough in the casting operation to form the projections 16 which partly enclose the lug strap 17 and form therewith the attaching lug of the shoe.
This invention provides a simple and novel means for securely anchoring thek body to the back and for retaining the parts of the body in place in case of fracture, so that the shoe may continue to give efficient service and to prevent parts from falling away and causing possible damage and injury. The flanges on the auxiliary back have interlocking engagement with the body and cooperate with the flanges on the back to securely anchor the body to the back.
I do not restrict the invention to the particular embodiment illustrated in the drawing but propose to employ it in any shoe for which it is or may be adapted and I reserve the right to make all changes4 in the form, construction and arrangement of parts within the scope of the following claim.
I claim:
A brake shoe comprising a body, a reenforce back Y on the body and having side anges enclosing adjacent corners of the body, an auxiliary back secured to the inner side of the reenforce back and having downwardly and outwardly inclined side flanges embedded'in the body, a strap lug engaged v with said backs, said auxiliary back having elongated recesses in its side edges and said reenforce back having complementary openings to receive parts of the strap lug and to permit the body metal to flow therethrough during the casting operation to form reenforce projections at the sides of said parts of the strap lug.V n
