SANITARY BEUsH Application led April 8,
My invention relates to brushes and particularly to a sanitary brush for use by barbers and the like. Y
Brushes are commonly used by barbers for applying powder to the face and neck and for removing hair clippings from the face and neck. Brushes ordinarily used for this purpose are very unsanitary. In some cases, to avoid unsanitary conditions, after a brush is used on'one lpatron it is cleansed and sterilized for subsequent use. With this system, which requires a great number of brushes, the investment in brushes and the cost of cleansing and sterilizing are considerable.
An object of my invention is to provide a brush of the class described comprising a handle and a quickly and easily replaceable head or bristle portion. Y
A further object of my invention is to provide a brush of the class described which is very simple and inexpensive `of manufacture.
A still further object is to provide a brush of the class described wherein the bristle portion may be made of paper or other suitable inexpensivel sheet material.
These and other objects and advantages of the invention will be more fully set forth in the following description made in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which like referencecharaoters refer to similar parts throughout the several views, and in which j Fig. l is a side view of my brush partially broken away to more clearly show the relation between the parts thereof;
Fig. 2 is a transverse cross sectional view of my brush taken along the line 2-'2 of Fig. l as indicated by the arrows;
Fig. 3 is a view of the folded paper blank from which the bristle portion of my brush is formed of the removable portion of the brush, and- Fig. 6 is a view of a portion of the folded 1932,. semaine. 603,967. y
paper blank from `the bristle' portion' of a modified form ofmy brush `is made.
Referring to the drawing, a rectangular sheet 7; of paper or ,other suitablesheet Vmaterial, is folded along its longitudinal center-line in such manner thatthehalves thereof, at the two sides of saidline, extend from the foldv parallel to each other. Each half ofthe folded sheet '7 is transversely slit from the free edge thereof toward the folded edge. to form a series of narrow bristle-likestrips 8, the slit portion thereof terminating short of the folded edge. `The folded sheet is then tightly rolledsof that the unslit portion 9, adjacent the folded edge thereof, will form -a cylindrical 'body 9a'with lthe bristle-like` strips depending therefrom. vPreferably the convolutio'ns of the body` 9a will be gluedfor .otherwise-se.-
curedtogether. A shallow cup 10,"V formed of metal or other suitable material, is slid onto the cylindricalbody and isysecured thereon by means of glue or cement orV by other suitable means. A handle, preferably made of wood or similar material, lis .pro
vided `at. one end withan enlarged Iportion 11a, having inthe endvthereof.` a recesswllb proportioned that the outer periphery there- Vin which the outer periphery 4ofthe cup'lO yis frictionally engaged. The/cup lOis so Y that said cup can be resistively drawnV from or insertedin said recess, but will not dropl out of said recess.` The enlargedportionlla is beveled at the outer end of the recess '11b to assist in centering the cup .K10 Lwheninserting the same inthe recess. 'l
In the modifiedV form of my brush, the construction and assembly of the same are identical withfthat. of the form described above `with the exception that the free ends of the bristle like stripsl2 are rounded,as f' It is' apparent thatlI have invented a new and useful form of sanitary brush `wherein the bristle portion can be very quickly and easily replaced and in which the handle portion may be used repeatedly. It is also apparent that my brush as a whole, and the lreplaceable bristle portion in particular, is very simple and inexpensive of manufacture. Y
It is obvious that my brush structure is readily adaptable to brushes of various 's'izes' and for various purposes and that the bristle portion may be made of any suitable sheet material. It is also app-arent that the slit paper blank, from which the bristles of my brush jare formed, may be formed into a brush by other methods than rolling, such as, for example, byY folding similar to the form of folding employed in forming accordion pleats. j
It will, of course, be understood that various changes may be made in the form, yde'- tails, proportions and Varrangement of the parts, without departingfrom the scope of my invention, which, generally stated, consists in a device capable of carrying `out the objects above set forth and in the novel parts and combinations of parts disclosed and defined in the appended claims.
What is claimed is '1. A method of constructing a brush head in which a rectangular sheet of material is first folded along the longitudinal center line thereof, the portions adjacent the fold being disposed parallel to and substantially in contact with each other, said folded sheet is then slit transversely from the free edges of said portions thereof toward the. folded edge to form a series of narrow, bristleelike strips, the corners are removed from the free ends of said strips said folded and slit sheet is rolled to form a cylindrical bristle structure, and means is applied adjacent the end formed by said folded edge `to retain said structure Vin rolled form.
2. A method of constructing a brush head in which a rectangular sheet of material is first folded along the longitudinal center line thereof, the portions adjacent the fold being disposed parallel to and` substantially in contact with each other, said folded sheet is then slit transversely from the free edges of said portions thereof toward the folded edge to form a series of narrow bristleelil'e strips, the free ends of said strips are rounded, said folded and slit sheet is rolled to form a cylindrical'bristle structure, and means is applied. adjacent the end formed by saidfolded edge to retain said structure in rolled form.
InV testimony whereof I affix l'my signan ture.
