UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD M. DEEY, on NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN LOCKING DEVICES FOR BOTTLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 190,292, dated May 1, 1877; application filed April 16, 1 71.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD M. DEEY, of the city, county, and State of New York, have in-,
vented a new and Improved Locking Device for Bottles, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to contrive a simple and cheap device for locking the stoppers of liquor and other bottles and vessels, for security against theft of the contents.
The invention comprises a cap, which covers the stopper, from which cap chains with suitable links depend. From these chains the hasp of the lock, which is made in the form of a band or collar, is suspended. This hasp and the chains are adjustably adapted for bottles of different sizes and forms. One end of the band is attached to the lock, and the other end is provided with a series of holes, to admit the key or bolt in a loop of the look, through which it passes, and thus holds the chains securely on the neck of the bottle.
The bolt forms the axis of a series of notched and lettered disks, which look it on the combination principle.
The bolt is provided with a spring, which raises the bolt when the disks are adjusted for unlocking, and holds the disks set until pressed down and looked, all being very simple in construction, and adapted to furnish a convenient and cheap safety attachment.
Figurel is a side elevation of the device, with the cap partly in section. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken between the cap and V the collar.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the cap, fitting over the stopper B and the nozzle 0, and having the collar D suspended from it by the chains E and links F,
or any contrivance allowing the collar to spring off and on the neck of the bottle, and to be shifted higher or lower for necks of different lengths. The said collar is attached by one end to the lock-frame G at H, and the other end passes through the slot or loop- I, to be secured by the bolt J, which enters the holes K for that purpose. This bolt, which works in the hollow longitudinal axis of the frame or case G, has the locking-disksLfitted on it, and also has key. projections on it, corresponding to notches in the disks, whereby it is locked and unlocked. M is the spring for-raising the bolt automatically, and retaining the disks in position when thebolt is raised.
It will be noticed that the lock frame or case is of such simple contrivance that it can be cast in the complete form required for use by coring out the center hollow and the spaces for the disks, and the disks can also be either cast or stamped in complete form and condition for use, thus making a very simple and cheap lock.
In this example the letters of the combination are C a t.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination of the cap A, the pendent chains E and links F, the suspended hasp or collar D, and lock G, substantially as specified.
2. The bolt J, the spring M, the disks L, the frame G, and the hasp or collar D, combined and arranged substantially as specified.
