Description

,H'. R. FELLSQ Lime Kiln. I No. 19,023. Patented Jan. 5, 1858 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
H. R. FELL, OF TEXAS, MARYLAND.
LIMEKILN.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 19,023, dated January 5, 1858.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, H. R. FELL, of Texas, in the county of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Perpetual Limekilns; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which-- Figure 1, is a front view of a lime kiln constructed with my improvements. Fig. 2, is a vertical central section in the line a, a, of Fig. 4:. Fig. 8, shows a vertical central division in the line 3 y, of Fig. 4, halves of the kiln being exposed. Fig. 4, is a horizontal section of the lime kiln as in proper condition for operation.
Similar letters of reference in each of the several figures indicate corresponding parts.
The nature of my invention consists in providing a perpetual. kiln with two or more air chambers, intermediate between the inner and outer surfaces of the wall of the kiln, when said chambers are constructed and arranged in the peculiar manner hereinafter more fully described.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A, represents a kiln constructed with a circular central chamber B suitable for burning lime-stone and coal together. The basin (1., of this central chamber is similar in form to an inverted cone, and has a discharge opening C, through which the manufactured lime discharges.
D, D, represent the air chambers, they are constructed in the building of the wall of the stack, and present in their horizontal section an annular space a, intermediate between the inner and outer surfaces of the kiln as shown in Fig. 4, the said space being divided by radial partitions c, 6, so as to prevent a continuous revolution of the air, and to render more certain its entrance into the stack. The chamber D, is double the depth of the air chamber D, and has two external inlet passages a a while D, only has one 6. This is necessary in order that sutlicient draft be admitted to insure the first burning of the fuel perfectly. .The chamber D, is situated near the base of the kiln, while D, is a considerable distance above it. This is necessary in order that air may be suppliedby the chamber D, to insure the combustion of the smoke and gaseous products thrown off from the coal.
The draft or air is supplied through fines c, a, c, c, which are made flaring inward or tapering outward as shown at 0', o, c, 0, so that the limestone and coal shall not fall back into the air chambers, and also that the air shall be compressed, and the draft shall consequently be more powerful and sudden in its effect.
hat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The peculiarly constructed air chambers D, D, intermediate between the inner and outer surfaces of the wall of the kiln, and grrauged as described, for the purposes set orth.
H. R. FELL.
