IMPROVEMENT IN WATER-GOVERNORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 190,154, dated May 1, 1877; application filed February 26, 1877.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CONRAD NEAB, of Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain Improvements in Water-Governors, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to equalize the pressure on the valves and stop-cocks of water apparatus, and to regulate the flow of water under varying pressure in the servicepipe by the interposition of a water-governor, consisting of a double-chambered case or hollow cylinder, A A, the chambers being separated from each other by a partition or diaphragm, B, having an opening, 0, in its center, a valve, D, to diminish or close said open ing, and a water-tight plunger or piston, E, that is connected to the valve D by a rod, F, as shown in the accompanying drawing.
G is the induction-pipe, connected with the lower chamber A; and H, the eduction-pipe, connected with the upper chamber A I, weights, to load and hold the valve open at any required minimum pressure.
The lower end of the valve D works through an ordinary stuffing-box in the bottom of the lower chamber A. The object of this arrangement is to prevent the pressure of the water in the chamber A A from effecting the movement or action of the valve D, as the pressure does not get below it, and hence its movement is effected only by the pressure exerted upon the plunger or piston E. 5
It will be readily understood that when the valve D is loaded, so as to be held down and leave the opening 0 clear open under a minimum pressure-say, of thirty pounds to the square inch-it will be raised by an increasing pressure acting on the plunger E, thereby diminishing the opening (J in proportion to the increased pressure, and consequently the flow of the water into chamber A, thus preventing the increasing pressure from injuriously affecting the valves, or increasing the flow of water into or through the water apparatus attached to the connection H.
I claim as my invention- 1. The double-chambered case AA, having the partition B with its opening 0, and having connections G .H with the service-pipe, as shown, in combination with the valve D and plunger E, arranged and operating substantially as and for the purpose set fortln 2. In combination with the chamber A, piston E, and weights I, the valve D, extending through the bottom of chamber A, as and for the purpose described.
