Description

RICHARD J. OHARD, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN LUBRICATING COMPOUNDS.
Specification formingpart of Letters Patent No. 199,789, dated January 29, 1878 application filed December 22, 1877.
' To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD J. CHARD, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lubricating Oompounds; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilledinthe art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to lubricating compounds; and the novelty consists in combining West Virginia mineral oil, caoutchouc, sulphur, plumbago, sal-soda, and bees-wax.
1n carrying out my invention I mix the ingredients in the following proportions, to wit: West Virginia mineral oil, (gravity 25 twelve (12) ounces; caoutchouc, two (2) ounces sulphur, two (2) oimces; plumbago, four (4) ounces; sal-soda, two (2) ounces; bees-wax, four (4) ounces.
In bringing these ingredients together, and for a more thorough mixture, the process commences with a slight heat, and as the ingredients are added to the mineral oil, constant stirring goes on, the heat increasing until it reaches a degree of 14.0 Fahrenheit, and kept at that degree for thirty (30) minutes, which produces a homogeneous mass.
To secure good results, the compound is well stirred until cooled.
An advantage to be derived from my combination is that the addition of caoutchouc, combined as hereinbefore specified, renders the composition more durable, serves to hold the other ingredients in thorough suspension, and prevents friction.
I am aware-that each of the ingredients hereinbefore recited has been long known and used in lubricating compounds 5: and therefore the employment of either alone or in other combinations than this is not claimed; but
' WhatI claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- A lubricating compound composed of West Virginia mineral oil, 'caoutchouc, sulphur, plumbago, sal-soda, and bees-wax, and combined substantially in the manner and in the proportions specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I aflix my signature in presence oftwo witnesses.
RICHARD J. OHARD.
