Description

UN TED STATEs PATENT OEEIcE.
OINTHIA JANE BEATTIE, OF PUEBLO, COLORADO.
IMPROVEMENT IN OINTMENTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 199,684, dated January 29, 1878; application file October 27, l877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CINTHIA JANE BEATTIE, of Pueblo, in the county of Pueblo and State of Colorado, have invented a new and Improved Salve for Skin Diseases, of which the following is a specification:
This invention relates to that class of compounds known as salves, composed of a variety of ingredients having medicinal qualities; and consists in a composition in the form of a salve, hereinafter described, in which the aforesaid medicinal properties are utilized, together with the curative properties of other ingredients.
To prepare the salve, take the bark in a dry state, stew it in a little water until the water nearly all evaporates; then add old-bacon grease, and fry it until the bark is brittle; then strain out all the grease, to which the other ingredients are to be added, the spirits of camphor last, so that undue evaporation of the latter will not take place; then stew the mixture over a fire just hot e ugh to fuse the resin for a few minutes, stir ng a little in order that the ingredients may ite more readily; take it off the fire and box 1 .efore it congeals.
The following is the nameand proportion of each ingredient that I have found very satisfactory, to wit: Dried bark of sumac-root,
one ounce; old-bacon grease, one ounce; mutton-suet, one-half ounce; bees-wax, one-half ounce; res1n,one-fourth ounce; spirits of camphor, two drains; spirits of turpentine, two,
drains.
The salve improves by age, and is very effective in skin diseases, such as fetter, ringworm, salt-rheum, sunburn, frost-bite, burns, scalds, outs, bruises, and sores in general, whether chronic or acute.
The essential ingredient or element of this compound is the extract in lard of the bark. The other ingredients and the proportions can be varied to suit circumstances, tastes, or caprice. 7
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- A compound consisting of dried bark of sumac-root, one ounce; bacon-grease, one ounce;
mutton-suet, one-ha1f-ounce; bees-wax, onehalf ounce; resin, one-fourth ounce; spirits of camphor, two drains; and spirits of turpentine, two drarns, as set forth.
h OINTHIA JANE BEATTIE.
