Description

April 2, 1935. R MIFRY 1,996,470
- RECTAL INSTRUMENT Patented Apr. 2, 1935 UNITED STATES oFF RECTAL INSTRUMENT- Robert M. Fry, Upper Darby, ra. Application November 1.7, 1932, Serial No. 642,987
2 Claims'.v '(Cl. 12S-271) The object of the invention is to provide im# provements in rectal instruments broadly, but more especially'in a type which is so designed as to advantageously treat the prostate gland.
As is well known, the prostate gland is a racemose gland at the base of the bladder in males, and therefore liesclosely adjacent to the lower portion of the rectal orifice or anus, the technical term for the opening at the aboral extremity of the alimentary canal thru which the excrement is expelled.
The prostate gland in some persons is subject to irregular and abnormal functioning, since it sometimes becomes inflamed, or enlarges, and in such cases besides affecting the regularity and completeness of the ow of the more solid excrement, adversely influences the secretion, retention and emission of the liquid excreta or urine.
A secondary result of such trouble is found in the resulting painful reaction, which frequently causes persons so affected to stoop more or less continually, at times resulting in the permanent deformation of the persons stature, and the more or less painful functioning of the excremental and excretive organs.
An object of the invention is therefore to provide an instrument, which can be inserted thru the anus and so extend into the rectum as to massage the prostate gland, thru the simple and natural act of breathing, and other normal muscular motions of the body, thereby causing the local muscles of the rectum to contract, along with an increase in the blood flow thru adjacent parts, resulting in a revivifying of the prostate gland, and an increase in the regular and natural functioning of the intestines.
With these facts and objects in mind, the invention comprises details which are fully brought out in the following description, when read in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of one embodiment of the invention;
Figure 2 is a central vertical section of the same, on the line 2-2 of Figure l;
Figure 3 is a horizontal section on the line 3-3 of Figure l; and y Figure 4 is a top plan view of the same.
Referring to the drawing, that embodiment of the invention here illustrated comprises a rounded head portion I, from which the body 2 tapers normally downwardly, towards a neck 3 of minimum diameter, whence said body portion merges into a radially enlarged terminal portion l, which forms a manually engageable handle or knob, by
means of which the device is designed to be inserted into and withdrawn from the rectum.
` When in operative position it is to be noted that the body portion 2 extends into and is of such diameter as to slightly distend the walls of 5 the rectum (not shown), while the neck 3 lies within the anus. The head l, being well rounded, prevents abrasion, laceration,l or chang, of the walls of the rectum while being inserted into', after entering, and during removal therefrom. l0 Finally, the terminal knob I permits manual movement 'of the device both longitudinally and angularly about its axis, and being of shallow depth permits retention of the device for short or long periods, whether in. sitting, walking, or 15 reclining posture, without interference with or even encountering ones clothes.
Also, it has been found that, as the improved instrument is formed of porcelain or other clay base, as distinguished from metal, rubber and 20 similar substances, it can be so employed to apply heat to the rectum and to the .prostate gland, by first heating said instrument to the required degree in water, oil, or other suitable medium, after which the instrument will retain such heat for a 25 relatively long period with the beneficial results desired.
In the use of this device, it has been found that to insert the same for a short period while in a sitting position, is frequently sufficient to massage 30 and otherwise advantageously produce the desired effect, either as a result of the manual movement of the device, or the more or less regular movement of the device during and as a result of the normal act of breathing. Otherwise, the 35 device may be retained for a longer period, either at definite or irregular intervals, with the result that the prostate gland gradually regains its ability to function normally, and again permits the regular operation of both the excremental and 40 excretive organs..
Thus, it has been found that the use of this device has been instrumental in alleviating both prostatic and prostatovesical ailments or deflciencies,including prostotauxe,the enlargement of 45 the prostate gland; prostatelcosis, the ulceration of the prostate gland; prostatitis, the inflammation of the prostate gland, prostatocele, the enlargement of the prostate gland; prostatocystitis, the inflammation of the prostate gland, involving 50 the bladder; prostatoparectasis, the enlargement and induration of the prostate gland; prostatorrhea, a gleedy or morbidly increased discharge from the prostate gland; prostatoscirrhus, an increase of the fibrous tissue of the prostate gland. 55
with consequent enlargement and hardening; prostatovesiculitis, iniiammation of the prostate gland and seminal vesicles; and other similar impairments, irregularities and ailments, without the use of medicines, salves, ointments and the like, or the resort to surgical methods and operations.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States, isz- 1. An imperforate elongated clay body adapted to be heated to a predetermined temperature and inserted into the rectum, and solely by virtue of its own physical characteristics and, without receiving heat from any other agency after insertion retain approximately such predetermined temperature for a relatively long period, said body comprising a head portion adapted to lie in the rectumand of maximum diameter adjacent to its normally inner end, said body gradually tapering outwardly into a narrower portion integral with said head and adapted to lie in the anus, and the circumferential surfaces of said body being characterized by no abrupt changes in diameter.
2. An imperforate elongated clay body adapted to be heated to a predetermined temperature and inserted into the rectum, and solely by virtue ot its own physical characteristics and, without receiving heat from any other agency after insertion retain approximately such predetermined temperature for a relatively long period, said body comprising a head portion adapted to lie in the rectum and of maximum diameter adjacent to its normally inner end a narrower connecting portion adjacent t'o the normally outer end integral with said head and adapted to lie in the anus, and a manually engageable enlargement integrally connected to said body by said narrower portion and operative to limit the longitudinal movement of the instrument in one direction. said enlargement terminating relatively abruptly and aiording a manually engageable portion for insertion and removal of said body, and said body being characterized by no abrupt irregularities zo in its circumferential surfaces.
