The impression cylinder is shown at c, being driven by the intermediate shaft d from the motor e, the paper feed roller shaft at f andthe web of paper fed through the machine at y. Mounted in bearings h on the side frames i of the machine is a guide roller k from which the stretch of paper g passes to the impression'cylinderc and disposed below the. roller lc is a shaft m that is rotatively carried in the frames z' and on which are mounted a pair of iiexible tension arms n. The shaft m is extended at both ends beyond the frames i and on one such extended end is fixed a bar o to which is lconnected the rod p which is actuated by the cam q mounted on the .impression cylinder shaft r. A bar s with an anchoring spring t is fixed to theother extended end of the shaft m.

At theV end of arms n are swung clear of the web (Figure 2) the tension frame a: falls automatically, the shape and operation of the cam y permitting, into the position shown in this figure whereby the paper web g allowed during the printing operation to sag ,between the rollers k andv2 (Figure 4) shown in the printing operation when the n is drawn taut by the three bars 4, 3, and 5 and the stretch of paper g between the guide roller y' l lc and the impression cylinder c taut during Athe printing operation and to take up the accumulated slack in the web g between this roller 1c and the next guide roller 2 during the non-printing period.
It will be obvious that the tension devices described may also be employed in connection with machines of the platen type where there is an intermittent paper feed. n
