s Claims.

This invention relates to a flower holder, and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this kind which includes a base which removably receives a flower member so that if desired the flowers may be readily transported, as for ex- 7 ample to protect them during the night.

Another object of the invention is to provide a structure of this kind which is particularly adapted for use in connection with a grave and which includes a cover to be placed over the flower member to afford protection against the earth from a grave which is being dug alongside of the grave provided withthe holder.

r 'A further object of the invention isto provide a device of this kind including a base member constructed in' a manner whereby it is possible to eifectively use aimower to cut the grass right up to the edges of the base member.

The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved flower holder whereby certain importantiadvantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

in order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference-to the accompanying drawing, wherein:

As disclosed in the accompanying drawing, B denotes a base member of desired dimensions and which is preferably rectangular in form. This member B as herein disclosed comprises the relatively broad members 1 defining a central rectangular opening 2 and the inner marginal portions of the members 1 are defined by the upstanding flanges 3. One of the flanges 3, preferably an end flange, is provided with a name plate 4.

The holding member H is of such dimensions as to allow the lower portion thereof to be snugly received within the base member B.

The side walls 5 of the this member H are of a height considerably greater than the height of theflanges 3 of the base member B and said side walls are provided therearound with an exterior shoulder 6 for contact with the upper edge faces of the flanges 3 whereby is limited the extent of insertion of the member H within'the base member B and also whereby the member H is effectively held in place. These shoulders 6 are preferably provided by having the upper portions of the side walls 5 of the holding member H of a thickness greater than the thickness of the lower portions of such side walls as is believed to be clearly illustrated in Figures 2 and 3 of the drawing.

The upper marginal portion of the holding member H is defined by the outstanding flanges 7 which are mainly for esthetic value and it is to be noted that these flanges terminate inwardly of the outer edge faces of the flanges 1 so that in cutting grass one wheel of the mower can readily run on the flanges 3 thus assuring desired cutting of the grass right up to the edges of the base member. It is to be further stated that in practice in placing the base member, the surrounding soil is preferably substantially flush with the upper surfaces of the flanges 3.

From the foregoing it is believed to be clearly apparent that the member H can be readily reroved or applied with respect to the base member B. This is of advantage as the holder can be transported when desired to protect the flowers and more especially during the night.

The removal of the member H is also desirable when the holder is employed in connection with 40 a grave as it will allow the removal of the holder with its flowers at the time an adjacent grave is opened. When the holder is for use upon public or private lawns, the removal of the holder H readily allows for-protection against frost or pilfering of the flowers after nightfall.

As herein disclosed, the holding member H is positively held or locked in applied position by a latch 8 carried by a flange 3 and coacting with a pocket or recess 9 provided in a side wall 5 of the member H. This latch 8 as herein disclosed is operated ext'eriorly of the members B and H by a key 10. At this time it is to be stated that the particular construction of the latch 8 and the operating means therefor forms no particular part of the present invention.

The bottom wall 11 of the holding member H, preferably in its central portion, is provided with drain openings 12 which may be closed by a sliding or pivoted closure plate 14 operatively engaged with the under surface of the bottom wall 11.

My improved flower holder as herein disclosed also comprises in its assembly a cover member C adapted to be disposed over the applied holding member H and which has its marginal portions defined by the outstanding flanges 15 to rest upon the outer portions of the flanges 1 of the member B.

After being applied in place a suitably designed frame 16, in the present instance rectangular, is superimposed upon the flanges 15, the members of said frame being preferably angular in cross section to provide depending flanges 16 which, as herein disclosed, overlie the outer edge faces of the flanges 1 and lie closely adjacent thereto. Each of the members of the frame 16 substantially midway its ends carries a swinging latch 1'7 which engages the adjacent flange 1 from below and thus provides means to effectively hold the cover member C in applied position.

This cover member C is used when it is desired to protect the flowers within the member H without removing such member H from the base member B. This cover member C is also adapted to have produced thereon fraternal emblems or other insignia as may be desired. It is also desirable to employ the cover member C during such periods the member H may be removed and more especially when such removal is for a protracted period of time.

It is also possible for the cover member C to be separately used and when so used each of the flanges 15 has engaged therewith one or more headed anchoring members 18, preferably in the form of stakes or wedges to be driven into the ground. The upper or outer ends of each of such stakes or wedges 18 is provided with an axial bore 19 to permit the placement of rods for holding wreaths or to receive the staff for a flag.

The members H and B as illustrated in Figures 1 and 2 may be of wood, stone or any other suitable material. In Figure 5, however, I illustrate an embodiment of my invention wherein the lower portion of the holding member M comprises a separate pan-like member 20 of a rust resisting or other metal. In this embodiment of ny invention the member M comprises an upper section 21 and a lower section 22, the section 22 comprising the lower portion of the side wall of the member M. The section 22 is bolted, as at 23, to the section 21 and between adjacent edge faces of the applied members 21 and 22 is received an outstanding flange 24 defining the upper marginal edge of the adjacent wall of the member 20. As is particularly illustrated in Figure 5, each of the bolts 23 is also directed through the flange 24 thus assuring the member 20 being effectively maintained in desired assembly.

From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a flower holder constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.

I claim:

1. A device of the class described comprising relatively broad base members defining a central opening, upstanding flanges defining the inner marginal portions of said members, a holding member snugly fitting within the central opening, said holding member having exterior shoulders for contact from above with the flanges to limit the insertion of the holding member within the central opening.

2. A device of the class described comprising a base member defining a central opening, a holding member snugly fitting within the base member, said holding member having exterior shoulders for contact from above with the base member to limit the insertion of the holding member within the base member, said holding member having a bottom provided with a drain opening, and means for closing said drain opening.

3. A device of the class described comprising a base member defining. a central opening, a holding member snugly fitting within the base n'rei'nber, said holding member having exterior shoulders for contact from above with the base member to limit the insertion of the holding member within the base member, and means for locking the applied holding member to the base member.

4. A device of the class described comprising a base member defining a central opening, a holding niem er snugly fitting within the base member, said holding member having exterior shoulders for contact from above with the base member to limit the insertion of the holding member within the base member, said base member being defined by a flange extending outwardly beyond the applied holding member.

5. A device of the class described comprising a base member defining a central opening, a holding member snugly fitting within the base member, said holding member having exterior shoulders for contact from above with the base member to limit the insertion of the holding member within the base member, and a cover member for placement over the applied holding member, said cover member seating on the base member.

6. A device of the class described comprising a base member defining a central opening, a holding member snugly fitting within the base member, said holding member having exterior shoulders for contact from above with the base member to limit the insertion of the holding member within the base member, a cover member for placement over the applied holding member, said cover member seating on the base member, and means for holding the cover member in applied position.
