V Itis an object of this invention to provide an auxiliary table adapted forremovable engagementwith the base of a portable sewing machine to facilitate the advance of material into the field of operation of the sewing machine.

It is also an object of this invention to provide an auxiliary sewingmachine table constructed to permit the same to be removably engaged over a portable sewing machine into a position wherein the top surface of the auxiliary table is on a level with the top surface of the base of the sewing machine. 7 50 It is a further object of this invention to provide an auxiliary table for use with a portable sewing machine said table having an opening therein topermit the upper portion of the sewing machine to project upwardly through the auxiliary table with the top surface of the auxiliary 7 of tableillustrated in Figure 3.

It is furthermore an object of this invention to provide anauxiliary table for use with a portable sewing machine and constructed to permitv the same to be removably associated withthe base of a portable sewing machine to be held in position. thereby with the feet of the auxiliary table resting upon a common support for the sewing machine and the auxiliary table whereby the 0 top surface of the auxiliary table is disposed in the same plane as the top surface ofthe base of the portable sewing machine. It is an important object of this invention to provide a portable sewing machine with an auxil- V iary table which is removable and. which when in position is held in position by the base of the sewing machine toprovide a working extension for thesewing machine 'wherebygoods to be sewed may be fed to the sewing machineon a level with the top surface of the'base of said'machine. Other and further important object'sof this invention will be apparent from the f disclosures in the specification and the accompanying draw ing.

The invention (in a preferred form) is illustrated in the drawing and hereinafter more fully described.

- The present invention covers an auxiliary worktable for use in combination with a portable sewing machine to provide a working or material feed surface at the same level as the top surface of the base of the sewing machine to facilitate sewing. In the present showing the reference numeral 1 indicates the rectangular base of an v ordinary portable type of sewing machine, said base having a top working surface 2. Projecting above the base of the sewing machine is an arm or elbow 3 having the ordinary sewing machine head 4 formed or mounted on one end there of. Projecting downwardly from the sewing mac5 chine head 4 is a needle holder 5 in which the sewing machine needle 6 is engaged.

The improved auxiliary work table embodying the principles of this invention comprises a portable table top '7 provided with supporting legs 8 of a length determined by the height of the base section 1 of the sewing machine. The length of the legs 8 is such that the top working surface of the auxiliary table top? is disposed in the same plane as the top surface 2 of the'base section 1 as clearly illustrated in Figure 2. The auxiliary table top 7 is provided with a longitudinal rectangular opening 9 provided near one end of the table top. The shape of the opening '9 is subr stantially that of the shape of the base 1 to permit the auxiliary table when the same is engaged downwardly over the upper mechanism of the portable sewing machine to fit around the base 1 which in turn acts as a means for holding the auxiliary table locked in position against longi-' tudinal or transverse shifting with respect to the base of the sewing machine. As clearly illustrated in Figure 2 a work drawer 10 is supported upon the bottom surface of the auxiliary table top 7, Printed or inlaid in the top surface of the table top 7 adjacent the front margin of the auxiliary table is a yardstick or graduated ruler 11. I v 7 .When it is desired to use a portable sewing machine the sewing machine is placed upon a supporting table 12 and the auxiliary table is then engaged over the sewing machine in the position illustrated in Figure 2 to permit the legs of the auxiliary table to rest upon the top surface of the supporting table 12 thereby positioning the top working surface of the auxiliary table on a level with the top surface 2 of the base of the sewing machine. With the auxiliary table in position as described it will be noted that a considerable working or feed surface is provided to the left of the base of the sewing machine in addition to the working surfaces disposed to the front and to the rear of the machine base. With the use of the auxiliary table work to be sewed may be fed to the sewing machine needle 6 in the plane of the top surface 2 of the sewing machine base thereby greatly facilitating sewing and eliminating the inconvenience of raising and holding material as it is fed to the needle which was necessary when the material was supported on the supporting table 12 instead of on the auxiliary table top 7.

After a sewing operation when the portable sewing machine is no longer needed the auxiliary table is merely lifted upwardly off of the supporting table 12 out of engagement with the portable sewing machine thereby permittingthe portable sewing machine and the auxiliary table to be stored away in a compact space. Figures 3 and 4 illustrate a modified form of auxiliary table for use in combination with a portable type of sewing machine. In the modified form of the auxiliary table the reference numeral 13 indicates an auxiliary table top having'pivotally attached to one end thereof a table extension I 14. The two auxiliary table sections 13 and 14 are connected to one another by means of hinges 15 or other suitable means. Hingedly or pivotally. supported on the bottom of each of the auxiliary table sections 13" and 14 are legs 16 which may be folded upwardly against the bottom surfaces of the table sections when the auxiliarydevice is not in use. Provided in theauxiliary table top section 13 is a rectangular opening 1'7 of a shape and size to permit the auxiliary table to be engaged downwardly over the base of the portable sewing machine similar to the arrangement illustrated in Figure 2. The foldable legs 16 of the auxiliary table are of a height sufiicient to permit the top surfaces of the table, sections 13 and 14 to be disposed at the level of the top surface 2 of the base of the portable sewing machine when the auxiliary table is in position for use.

After a sewing operation the auxiliary table may be lifted upwardly out of engagement with the base of the portable sewing machine after which the auxiliary table may be. folded in half with the supporting legs 16 folded against the bottom surfaces of the table sections.

,While two different types of auxiliary tables have been-illustrated and described for use in combination with portable types of sewing machines it will of course be understood that other forms may be developed to embody the principles of the present invention.

It .will also be understood that various details of construction maybe varied through a wide range without departing from the principles of this invention and it is therefore not the purpose to limit the patent granted hereonotherwise than necessitated by the scope of the appended claims.

I claim as my invention:

1. A removable auxiliary work tablehaving an opening defined by four sides, the said sides of said opening being constructed and arranged to be disposed about the base of a portable sewing machine supported on a substantiallly fiat supporting surface for preventing-a substantial relative movement .of said table and .machine in the plane of said surface-and means for supporting said work table in the plane of the top surface of said base of saidmachine' and in spaced relation above said supporting surface.

2.v A removable auxiliary work table of a single piece of material having an opening defined by four sides, the said sides of said opening being constructed and arranged to be disposed about the base of a portable sewing machine supported on a substantially fiat supporting surface for preventing a substantial relative movement of said table and machine in the plane of said surface, and means for supporting said work table in the plane of the top surface of said base of said machine and in spaced relation above'said supporting surfaces.
