Description
H. GEROULD. Shield for Commode-Oovers.
No.199,284. I Patented Jan. 15,1878.
15717105565. v Ewen/"011 ER. .wl
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
HENRY GEROULD, or CLEVELAND, OHIO;
IMPROVEMENT IN SHIELDS FOR COMMODE-COVERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 199,284, dated January 15, 1878; application filed September 17, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY GERoULn, of Cleveland, in the county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shields for Oommode-Govers, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a top view of a commode-cover. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in the several views presented.
This invention is a shield to be placed on, over, and around the edge of a commode-cover; and the object thereof is to prevent the escape from the vessel of the mephitic odors of its contents; also, to protect the edge of the cover from being nicked or broken, and to prevent the noise or click of the same on being placed upon the vessel.
The shield above referred to consists of a rubber ring having an upper and lower side or web, A and B, the outer edges of which are united to each other, whereas the two inner edges are open. The lower web of the ring is broad, so that it may extend down under the edge of the cover G, and partially over the under surface thereof, as shown in Fig. 2. The upper web A is not so wide, but which, however, extends circumferentially so far over the cover as to hold it securely thereon.
Said shield being made of rubber, and in virtue of its elastic character, it can be easily and readily sprung over upon the edge of the cover, as shown in the drawings. The flexible nature of the shield causes it to adjust itself closely and readily to the rim of the vessel when the cover is placed thereon, and also to the flange D of the cover, by which a close fitting of the cover is obtained to the "essel, whereby the odors of its contents are prevented from escaping into the room; also, the shield prevents the noise or clicking of the cover when placing it upon the vessel, and its edges are prevented from being nicked or broken by its contact therewith.
The elastic character of the shield renders it adaptable to various sized vessels, on the covers of which it can be easily sprung and removed therefrom.
WhatI claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
An adjustable shield, consisting of two elastic webs with central openings, and having their peripheries united to each other and their inner edges free, thereby forming a covering for the edge of a commode-cover, under which cover one of said webs extends to some distance as a lining, whereas the other extends around the edge of the cover, and for some distance or partially over the top thereof, substantially as herein described, and for the purposes specified.
