This invention relates to improvements in combined motor and manual operated devices for adjusting an object horizontally and vertically with respect to its supports, and more particularly to the negative frame as used in photoprinting apparatus, this application being divided from an application on Photo-composing machines, filed February 24, 1927, Serial Number 171,126, now'Patent No. 1,920,399, dated August 1, 1933. In devices of this character, it is desirable to avoid all tendencies of looseness or back-lash in such structures, for the reason that extreme accuracy is absolutely necessary.
It is also advantageous that the movements be accomplished as rapidly as possible and with a minimum of energy on part of the operator.
It is therefore the purpose of the present invention to provide a structure, composed of spaced 3!} uprights rigidly connected at their lower ends and presenting means for guiding a slidable frame mounted for vertical movement, and to-combine with the frame a plate carrier movable longitudinally relative to the frame.
A further object is to provide a means for'moving a press plate bed in one direction that is separate from other means of movement for moving a negative carrier, so that the movement of either the negative or the plate will not cause movement of the other.
These and other important objects, which will become apparent as the description progresses, are accomplished by the novel and practical construction 'and combination of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawing, forming a material part of this dis.- closure, and in which:
Figure 1 is a rear elevational view of a machine made in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is asectional view taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawing in greater detail, the numeral 300 designates a base from which rises a pair of columns 301, one of which is provided on its inner surface with spaced, parallel dovetail guides 302 extending its full length.
I Movable on theguides is a rectangular slide 303 having a rearwardly extending rigid bar 304 at its upper end on which rides, at a right angle thereto, a pair of horizontal rails 305' having downwardly extending brackets 306v carrying a lamp housing 307, the slide 303 being provided with a bracket 3'08, passing through a slot in the upright and having a threadedboss 309 at its end engaging a vertical screw 310 journalledin bearings 311 at the top and bottom of the upright.
Extending inwardly from the slide303 in front of the lamp housing 30'? is a spacer 312 to which is fixed a negative carrying frame 313. 5
Secured on the base 300 is a bracket 314 supporting a motor 315 connected by a friction clutch 316, to the lower end of the screw 310, the same being provided at its upper extremity with a hand'wheel 317, so that the screw may be mechanically or manually actuated as desired.
Thus the frame 313 and the lamp housing 307 may be moved in a vertical plane, while the housing 307 may be moved backward and forwar on the track 304.
Fixed to the front of the uprights 301 and extending beyond the same at both sides, is a beam 318 having an undercut guide 319 on its upper surface on which is a carriage 320 engaging a horizontal screw 321 journalled in bearings 322 at the ends of the beam, the screw being provided with a hand wheel 323 at one end for manual operation, and a friction clutch 324 at its other end, connected to an electric motor 325, mounted on a bracket 326 for mechanical operation.
The carriage 320 is provided with upstanding lugs 327 connected by a pair of horizontal hinge pins 328, engaging in leaves 329 secured on the outer face of a plate bed 330 to carry any preferred sensitized positive plate,-the bed being provided with a catch 331 to hold the same in its vertical position.
It will be noted that in the foregoing structure, the negative frame 313 can'be moved in a vertical plane together with the lamp housing 307 and the lamp housing can also move away from the negative, whereas the plate bed 330 may be moved longitudinally, enabling a sensitized plate held thereon to be moved in any position relative 40 to the negative.
The term negative, as used throughout this application, is to be understood as referring to any transparent or translucent substance, as
glass, celluloid and analogous compounds, paper j and textile fabrics treated to permit the passage of light, etc. etc. bearing images, scribed, written, drawn or deposited photographically, of any objects whatsoever, or having the objects attached in such manner as to be reproduced by photoadjustment.
A sensitized plateis secured on the press bed which is then raised by swinging upwardly and held in a vertical position, parallel with the negative frame and the bed and frame mutually adjusted.
Separate controls for each are provided, all being conveniently accessible to an operator, making final or complete adjustments by the hand-wheels.
It will be understood that the relative positions of the negative and blank. positive may be re versed if desired.
It is also to be noted that the vertical screws may be made of such diameter and rigidity as to operate as guides in themselves.
Although the improvements have been described with considerable detail and with respect to certain particular forms of the invention, it is not desired to be limited to such details since many changes and modifications may well be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention in its broadest aspect.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new and desired to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a photographic machine having upright supports, a negative frame movable vertically in said supports, and a plate bed foldable upwardly and movable relative to and in a direction different from that of said frame.
2. In a photographic machine having upright supports, a negative frame mounted in said supports, means to move said frame'in a vertical plane, and a plate bed hinged at its bottom and movable in a transverse plane relative to said frame.
3. In a photographic machine having upright suports, a negative frame movable vertically in said supports, means for moving said frame vertically, a carriage, a plate bed hinged to said carriage, and means to move said carriage and bed relative to and in a direction diiferent from that of said frame, saidmeans of movement being separate from each other.
4. In a photographic machine having upright supports, a vertically movable negative frame in said supports, means for moving said frame vertically, a lamp housing in register with said frame, a carriage, a plate bed hinged to said carriage, and means to move said carriage transversely to said frame and said lamp housing, said means of movement being separate from each other.
5. In a photographic machine having upright supports, a track on one of said supports, a negative frame vertically movable on said track, a beam fixed on said supports, a carriage longitudinally movable over said beam, and a plate bed hingedly engaged to said carriage.
6. In a photographic machine having upright supports, a stationary horizontal beam carried by said supports, a slide vertically movable in said supports, a negative frame carried by said slide, a track extending rearwardly from said slide, a lamp housing movable on said track, a plate bed movable on said beam transversely to said frame and lamp housing, hinges connecting the lower edge of said bed to said slide, and means to retain said bed whenerect.
'7. In a photographic machine having upright supports, a negative frame vertically movable in said supports, a stationary beam carried by said supports to extend outwardly therebeyond, a longitudinal lead screw journalled in said beam, a carriage engaging said screw, and a plate bed hinged in said carriage to move at a right angle to said frame and to be folded into a vertical position.
8. In a photographic machine, means for moving a plate in one direction, means for moving a second plate in a direction at a right angle to that of the first plate, said means being wholly independent of each other and said plates being movable while in parallel planes independently one to the other one of said plates being hingedly mounted.
9. In a photographic machine, the combination of a body frame comprising two spaced uprights, a negative holder, means for shifting said holder vertically with respect to the body frame, a horizontal slide carried at the rear of said uprights, a sensitized plate supporting bed hinged to said slide, means for securing said bed in a position parallel with said negative holder and supporting the bed when horizontal, and independent means for producing relative movement between said bed and holder in parallel planes.
10. In a photographic machine, a supporting structure, a negative holder mounted to move vertically thereon, a rearwardly extending horizontal beam movable up and down with said holder, a. lamp housing supported by said beam and adjustable therealong towards and away from said holder, a plate bed movable transversely to said holder, and means to actuate said plate bed.
ll. In a photographic machine, a pair of spaced uprights, a support slidably attached to one of said uprights to extend toward the other, a negative frame carried by said support, rack bars extending at right angle from the support, a lamp housing adjustable on said bars, a beam fixed on said uprights to extend therebeyond at each end, a slide movable on said beam, a plate bed hinged to said slide, and means to actuate said slide.
12. In a photographic machine having upright supports, a vertically movable negative frame carried on one of said supports, a stationary horizontal beam on said supports, a carriage movable over said beam, 8. plate bed hinged to said carriage, said carriage being movable transversely relative to said frame, means to actuate said carriage, and means to retain said plate bed when in an operative position, all of said adjustments being independently effected.
13. In a photographic machine having a base and spaced uprights thereon, a negative frame intermediate said uprights, a horizontal beam sup ported by said uprights to extend at both ends therebeyond, a slide movable on said beam, a plate bed hinged to said slide to fold into vertical and horizontal positions, and a lamp housing ad justably mounted for movement towards and from said negative frame on the rear side of said frame.
14. In a photographic machine having two spaced uprights, a negative frame mounted for vertical movement therebetween, a horizontal beam having outreaching ends on the faces of said uprights, a slide on said beam, means for actuating said slide longitudinally of the beam, a bed plate hingedly connected with said slide, a lamp housing at the rear of said frame, and means for supporting said lamp housing, said lamp housing being adjustable in horizontal plane relative to said frame.
15. In a photographic machine, a supporting structure, a negative frame carried centrally of said structure, a lamp housing adjustably supported by said structure to move in a plane transverse to said frame, a horizontal beam carried by said structure, a slide movable therealong, means for actuating said slideyand a plate bed hingedto said slide to fold upright adjacent said frame. 16. In a photographic machine, anegative support mounted for translatory vertical movement, a sensitized plate support mounted for translatory horizontal movement, and means for actuating each support independently of the other.

In a photographic machine having' two spaced upright supports, a negative frame carried by said supports and mounted for. translatory movement in a vertical plane, a horizontal beam fixed on said supports and extending at each end therebeyond. a carriage movable along said said supports, means for vertically moving saidframe, and a plate bedfoldable upwardly and movable relative to andin a direction different from that of said frame.
19. In a photographic machine having upright upports. a negative frame movable vertically in said supports, a plate bed foldable upwardly and movable relative to and in a direction different from that of said-frame, and means for moving said bed plate lona'itudinally.
20. In a photographic'machine having upright supports. a negative frame movable vertically in said supports, a carriage movable relativeto and in a direction diiferent from that of said frame, and a plate bed supported by said carriage for movement therewith and for movement transversely with respect to said carriage.
21. In a photographic machine having upright supports, a negative frame movable vertically in said supports, means for moving said frame ver- 1 tically, a carriage movable relative to and in a on different from that of said frame, and a plate bed supported by said carriage for movementtherewith and for movement transversely with respect to said carriage.

In a photographic machine having upright supports, a negative frame movable vertically in said supports, a carriage movable relative to and in a direction difi'erent from that .of said frame, means for moving said carriage longitudinally, and a-plate bedsupported by said carriage for movement therewith and for movement transversely with respect to said carriage.

In a photographic machine, a pair of independently movable supports, one of which is a negative support mounted for translatory vertical movement and the other of which is a sensitised. plate support mounted for translator-y horizontal movement, actuating means operable to eifeet translatory movement of the negative support independently of the sensitized plate support, and actuating means operable to effect translator-y movement of the sensitized plate support independently of the negative support.

In a photographic machine, a pair of independently movable supports, one of which is a negative support mounted for translator-y vertical movement and the other of which is a sensitized plate support mounted for translatory horizontal movement, actuating means operable to effect translatory vertical movement of the negative support during the. maintenance of the sensitized plate support in a definite position, and actuating means operable to effect translatory horizontal movement of the sensitized plate support during the maintenance of the negative support in a definite position.

In a photographic machine, a pair of independently movable supports, one of which is a negative support mounted for translatory vertical movement and the other of which is a sensitized plate support mounted for translatory horizontal movement, and actuating means for ef-, fecting translatory vertical movement of the negative support during the maintenance of the sensitized plate support in a definite position and for eifecting' translatory horizontal movement .of the sensitized plate support during the maintenance of the negative support in a definite position.

In a photographic machine, a negative support mounted for translatory movement toward .and away from a definite point, a sensitized plate support mounted for translatory movement toward and away from a definite point and in a 'path at right angles to the path of movement of said negative support, and actuating means for Ieifecting translatory movement of the negative ward and away from a definite point, a sensitized.
