. This invention relates" to" material dispensing: devices and particularly'to? devices: for: dispensing: rolled or reeled strip material;
My invention has numerous: applications but I:
5' have chosen toiHustrate"andrdescriberit herein as. applied to an apparatus-fora dispensing a strip' of paper from a. supply: roll. 1
In various" classes: of: apparatus;v illustrative of which is electrically. operated.quotation tickers; telegraph typewriters etc., it is-desirable to: feed through the said apparatus a; relatively narrow strip: of paper and to supply the. samerfrom: a roll or reel.
It is desirable also" to enclose the supp 'yroll of paper in a suitable'ienclosing: means= such;1or example. as a cabinet. other. housing: to preserve the same against mutilation, tov keep it. clean etc;
When the. supply: roll of. paper concealed from view, it becomesdesirabl'eto know the quantity of the supply on the roll? as it is'=c0ntinuously used, so that as. the. supply roll: approachesthe end of the strip a new roll maybe: charged-into" the cabinet 'to avoid". interruption of the strip feed in the said apparatus;-
It is therefore one of the objects of my: invention to provide a.rol1ed1 material dispensing device whereby the quantity of' the. material'on a concealed roll may be at all timesindicat'eda Another object of my invention"is to provideanimproved containing cabinet. for a row' of dispensable material such asapaper: strip or the like, and provided with an" externally" visiblemeans for indicating the quantity of a the supply roll in the ca'binet.
Another. object is to provide a dispensing c'abi netfor rolled: material provided with: externally visible indicating means adapted" to indicate the decreasing diameter of the" roll of material a's it is dispensedi'from the cabinet;
Another object is to provide a rolled material dispensing cabinet having externally visible in dicating means for indicating the quantity of 1 rolled materialavailable in the c'abinetf'or-dispensing andwhich will be'simple' construction andin' which the indicating mea-n'smayjfunction without interfering withthe replacing of'an ex hausted or substantially exhaustedroll and th'e installation of a succeeding supplyrolll Other objects willbe apparent to those skilled in the art to which my'invention appertains.
My invention is fully disclosed inthe'follo'wing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. l is-a view illustratingar.mechanismembodying my invention and. showing in cross-section a part of an enclosing cabinet therefor;
Fig; 2'isa view taken from the plane 2 of Fig. 1; and
materialon Fig; 3 is-a view-taken from the plane 3 of Fig. 1. Referring to the drawing, I have shown at 1 and: 2 side walls of an enclosing cabinet, the
walls being.representedfragmentarily to simplify the drawing, but which as those skilled. in this will be understood by art may be of any desired extent'to completely enclose the roll of dispensable, material, 3,,to'be referred to later. The cabinet may also comprise a rear wall 4 and a wallopposite the wall 4 which is not shown in the; drawing. inasmuch, as" the cabinet isnillustrated in cross+section as above mentioned. The-walls 1',
2a-nd4. may beprovided with a: closing door 5 hinged-to the panelzl as at 6 and adapted to-be,
latched tothe panel 2 as, for example, by the device indicated generally at 7 comprising an eye 8 onlthe wall'2 and'a hook 9 pivoted on the door 5.
Upon the door 5 andinternally off the cabinet thus providedissecured a'bracket 10 comprising as foot 11 secured to the door 5 as by screws 12 and comprising an upstanding post 13 to the upper: end? of whichv is pivotally mounted a bell crank device 14, the pivot connection thereof comprising a screw 1'5 having a reduced portion lfil'and" a threaded portion 17 threaded .into the post 13. l Therbell crank device lepivots upon the reducedrportion 16 of the screw and'c'omprises a forwardly upwardly extending arm 18 and a downwardly extending arm .19 at anangle to the arm. 18.- r
At". theoutenfree-end of the arm 18, it is pro- VidBdfWithiliStUb shaft 20 upon which is rotatably mounted'aroll-s 2l of: dispensable material such as a stripof paper, the-strip being indicated at 22 andwadaptedto'be dispensedfrom the roll 21 by the rotation of the latterxupon the shaft 20, the
stripextendin'g fromthe roll 21 through a suitable slot or other perforation 23 in the door 5.
The-peripheryof the rol1'21 rests upon a roller support-1 25,;being: maintained thereagainst preferablybyathei action of: gravityon the roll 21 and the roller 25 is' rotata'bly. supported on v the shankof azscrew26fthreaded into a post 27 which has a horizontal" foot 28i secured to the inner face of. the: door 5. asbya1,s'crewv 29.
A disc or'sother' plate 30 issecured' to the door 5=inwardiy thereof. as. by screws 3l3'1 andhas pivotallymountedthereon a .dial finger 32, the pivotconne'ction being provided :by a screw 33 screwed: into the plate 30 and: extending through a suitable perforation in one end of the dial finger 32. The dial finger 32 is disposed generally parallel: and? spaced: inwardly from" the door 5 and at? its endopposite' thepivot33is bent to the) right at. substantially" as right angle-and extends: through: an: arcuate slot? in the door 5 andzonrthe=extreme rend a portion where: it emerges a direction parallel with the outer surface of provided with 'material is in the cabinet.
the door 5 as at 36 to provide an indicating point. An intermediate portion of the dial finger 32 is an upstanding post 3'7 having adjacent its free end. a neck 38 formed therein. A connecting link in the form of a wire 40 has one end bent to encircle the neck 38 and at its opposite end is bent to form a hookwhich is hooked into a perforation 41 in the end of the arm 19. f
Upon the outer surface oi the door 5 and substantially coextensive with the arcuate slot 35 is an indicating scale comprising suitable subdivision marks 42 and having the characters E and F at the extreme ends of the scale which signiiy the words empty and full respectively. The scale marks 42 and the slot 35 are arcuate around the center of the pivot 33.
The length of the link 40 and the relative positions of the arms 18 and 19 are so provided that when the roll 21 is full of strips to be dispensed, and when the roll rests upon the roller 25, the indicating point 36 of the dial finger 32 will indicate the scale division corresponding to the letter F and thus indicate that the full roll of ihe stiip 22 may now be dispensed out through the slot 23 and as the roll 21 diminshes in diameter, the arm 18 is moved correspondingly clockwise as viewed in Fig. 1, the action of gravity maintaining the decreasing periphery of the roll 21 always in contact with the roller 25. This exerts a pull upwardly as viewed in Fig. 1 of the link 40 through the agency of the arm 19 and moves the dial finger 32 clockwise as viewed .in Fig. 2, causing the indicating point 36 to move upwardly over the scale, Fig. 3, toward and ultimately reaching a position adjacent. the character E.
Thus the indicating point 36 indicates at all times the quantity of dispensable material still on the roll 21.
- When the roll is exhausted or when it is desired to renew the same, the door 5 may be opened by unhooking the latch 7 and the arm :18 may be turned counter-clockwise as viewed in Fig. 1 to free the roll from the roller 25, and the dispensed roll may be removed and a new one placed upon the stub shaft 20; and as will be readily understood, this simple operation is not in the least degree interfered with by the presence of the indicating mechanism comprising the link 40, finger 32 etc.
When it is desired that the roll 21 shall move by gravity and against the roller 25 and be maintained 'thereagainst, the cabinet may rest normally upon the wall 2. However, the cabinet may be disposed to rest upon the wall 4, in whichcase, a spring'50 may be provided secured at one end to the cabinet wall 1 and at the other.
end to the arm 19 to resiliently constrain'the bell crank device 1-.- toward clockwise movement to maintain the roll 21 against the roller 25.
My invention is not limited to the exact details of construction shown and described. Many changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
I claim:
