N.FEERS. PNDTO-LITHOGHAPMER, WASHINGTON. D CV UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIGE.
JEHIAL D. KNIGHT, OF WEST CONCORD, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
IMPROVEMENT IN GRAIN-MEASURES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 199,159, dated January 1.5, 1878; application iiled December 11, 1877.
`To all whom 'it may concern:
clare the saine to be described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure l is a top view, Fig. 2 a side view, and Fig. 3 a front elevation, of a measure provided with my invention.
Ihe invention consists, first, in the combination of a series of points, hooks, or spurs with a measure and a spout or nose thereof; second, in the combination of a series of points or spurs with a band or partial hoop and a nose, all being for application to a measure, as described; third, in the combination of a pair of handles, a band or partial hoop, and a series of points or springs, all being arranged substantially as and for application to a measure, as set forth.
In the drawings, A denotes a measure, which, for instance, may be what is usually termed a peck-measure,7 it being y a cylindrical wooden vessel open at top. To this measure I apply a partial metallic hoop or band, B, provided at its upper edge with a nose or spout, C, and at its lower edge with a series of hooks, points, or spurs, D D, &c., all being arranged as shown. I also project from such band two handles, E E, the whole being confined to the measure by nails, rivets, or screws going through the band.
Instead of fixing the spurs directly to the band, they may be extended from the measure; but I prefer to have them attached to the band.
These spurs are to hold and support a bag while the-measure is being used to pour from it through the nose grain or other matter into such bag.
A portion of the rim of the bag at its mouth is to be passed up against or back of the points of the spurs, the opposite part of the rim being held in the hand. This will open and keep open the bag while the material from the measure may be in the act of being discharged into the bag by means of the spout.
The band may be a circular hoop to extend entirely around and lit to the measure; but I prefer to have it a partial hoop, as represented'.
When directly connected with the handles the band serves to support them under the weight and strain of the, measure while it is being inclined for discharging its contents. Besides this, handles with the spurs, enable a person to hold both bag and measure at one and the same time, and to keep the bag in its proper relation to the spurs.
I claim as my invention as follows:
l. The combination of the series of points or spurs with the measure and its discharging-spout.
2. The combination of the spout with the band or ange and the series of spurs or points, arranged and projected therefrom as set forth.
3. The band, the nose, the spurs, and the handles, arranged and combined substantially as and for application to and use with a measure, as set forth.
JEHIAL D. KNIGHT.
