'I'he duplication of turned pieces on a han lathe has been a dimcult and tedious undertaking requiring considerable skill, notwithstanding the aid of the usual templates which are applied to the work from time to time as the turning progresses.-

In these drawings, the numeral 15 designates the bed of a wood-turning lathe. A ilat horizontal table 16 is 'adjustably secured to the lathe bed by any suitable clamping means l17. A pair of spaced supports 18 are rigidly secured to the table, as by fastening elements 19, and have mounted thereon, as by fastening elements 20, Ia
flat horizontal template or pattern 21, having an edge with a suitable profile which vit is desired to duplicate in a turned piece 22 carried by the lathe.
In that form of the invention shown in Figs. 1l to 6, a cast metal base or shoe 23 is slidably mounted on the table 16 and is provided with a vertical bore 24 slidably receiving the lower end of an upright cylindrical bar 25 which has its upper portion cut away to forma semi-cylindrical open ended channel 26, the upper end of which is sharpened, as seen in Fig. 3, to present a cutting edge or nose 27. Upwardly projecting side ears 28 are here shown to be formed on the upper end of the channel.
The lower end of the bore 24 is closed by a disk 29 secured to the .base by screws 30 and carrying 4a central vertical screw 31 abutting against the lower end of the bar 25 to adjust the vertical position of the bar and thereby locate the cutting edge 27 substantially at the horizontal axial plane of the work. The bar 25 is clamped in position by a set screw 32 inthe base and by another set screw 33 mounted in an angle shaped bracket 34 integrally formed on the base, the bracket having a bore 24 in which the bar slidably fits. The upper portion of the bracket 34 is spaced from the base, and the cylindrical portion of the bar 25 in the intervening space is'adapted to slidably bear against the profiled edge of the template 2l. A guard bracket 35 is secured by screws 36 to the upper surface of the base 23 and has a laterally projecting upper end provided with a cylindrical guard 37 which is alignedwith the bar 25 and is spaced a short distance above the cutting edge 27. The cutting edge projects slightly beyond the lower edge of the guard 37 and is preferably `given a slight flare or outward inclination for cutting clearance.
In use, the base 23 is slid about on the i,table 16 to bring the cutting edge 27 against the Work 22, which in many cases may start as a blank of square cross-section. `While the base is resting flaton the table, it may be swung to variouspositions to suit the work at hand. The guard 37, by its abutment with the work, limits the depth of cut so as to insure smooth and safe cutting. lEventually, the cylindrical bar 25 slidably abuts against the profiled edge of the rtemplate-21 to limit the cutting movement of the tool, and to determine the profile of the iinished work. Succeeding work pieces turned on the lathe in a similar manner will be accurate duplicates of the rst. If the template 21 is shifted transversely of the lathe bed between turning operations, the work pieces will have the same profile but will be of diierent diameters. In some instances, it
is possible to use a turned piece as a template.

For many classes of work it is desirable to prothe bench itself may form the `support for the e vide a second tool, similar to the first, but having a bar 25' formed with cutting and guilde por-v -tions 26' of V-shaped cross section, as seen in Figs. 5 and 6, to cut relatively sharp recesses in the work. The cutting edge 27 is given a slight flare, as seen in Fig. 5. The guard bracket carries a guard 37 of V-shaped cross-section spaced a short distance above the cutting edge, and the cutting edge projects slightly beyond the guard.
In the form of the invention shown in Figs. 7 and 8, a slidable base or shoe 123 has secured thereto by screws 136 an upright bracket 135 having vertical slots 138 formed transversely therethrough near its opposite edges. A channelshaped cutting member 125 with parallel sides embraces one edge portion of the bracket and is adjustably clamped thereto by bolts 139 passing through the lower slots 138. The opposite side edges of the cutting member are provided with inturned flanges 140 slidably fitting in vertical grooves 41 formed in the opposite faces of the bracket. The upper end of thecutting member is sharpened to form a slightly ared cutting edge 127 which is located substantially at the horizontal axial plane of the Work. The upper side edges of the cutting member are formed with recesses 142 for the passage of chips.
A channel-shaped guard member 137 embraces the edge portion oi' the bracket above the cutting member 125 and is adjustably secured to the bracket by bolts 139 passing `through the upper slot 138. A rounded depending portion of the guard member is spaced at a short distance above the cutting edge 127, and the cutting edge projects slightly beyond the guard-member.
A channel-shaped cutting member 125' embraces the other edge portion of the bracket 136 and is adjustably secured to the bracket in the same manner as the cutting member 125.. The cutting member 125' has a V-shaped outer edge 126' for cutting relatively sharp recesses in the work. A guard member 137' of similar crosssection is secured to the bracket 135 in the same way as the guard member 137. The base 123 is preferably formed with recesses or, notches 143 at opposite ,ends in register with the lower ends of the cutting members 125 and 125' to provide clearance for chips.
The device of Fig. 7 is used in the same way as the device of Fig. 1. The cutting member 125 is first applied to the work and then, if necessary the device is swung around to apply the V-shaped cutting member 125'v to the work.
In the form of the invention shown in Figs. v9 and 10, a slidable base or shoe 223, has secured thereto by screws 236 a bracket 235 provided with a hollow polygonal standard 244. The bracket .may be die cast and in some instances may be integral with the base. 'I'he bracket is provided at opposite ends with hollow posts 245 and 245' f of triangular cross-section, the upper surface of each post sloping downwardly toward the standard. A channel-shaped cutting member 225 has diverging sides embracing the post 245 and is adjustably xed thereto by a C-shaped clamp 246 secured to the post by a set screw 247, the
'converging ends of the clamp engaging the diverging sides of the cutting member; Recesses 248 are formed in the base, one of which is in register with the cutting member 225 to permit extended downward adjustment of this member. 'I'he upper end of the cutting member forms a rounded nose and is sharpened to provide a cutting edge 227. The lower portion of the cutting member slidably abuts against the proled edge of the template 21 near or below the clamp 246, the opening in the clamp 246 permitting an unobstructed view of the 4touching parts of the cutting member and template.
A die cast guard holder 248 is slidably but nonrotatably mounted on the standard 244 for verticall adjustment and is clamped in adjusted position by set screws 249, the guard holder having a sleeve portion 2504 in which the standard slidably ts. Near its opposite ends, the guard holder has vertical bores 251 receiving bolts 252, one of which clamps a guard block 237 to the lower face of the holder the guard block being spaced a short distance above the cutting edge 227. The nose of the guard block has the same shape as that of the cutting member, but the cutting edge 227 projects slightly beyond the guard block.
A channel-shaped cutting member `225f has flared sides embracing the other post 245' and is adjustably secured thereto in the same manner as the cutting member 225. The cutting member 225 has a V-shaped outer edge 126' for cutting relatively sharp recesses in the work. A guard block 237' of similar contour is secured to the holder 248 in the same manner as the guard block 137.
Each cutting member 225 and 225' cancunveniently be formed for bending to shape a sheet of tool steel. The clamping means is of such character that no openings need be made in the cutting members.
The device of Fig. 9 is used in the same manner as the devices of Figs. 1 and 7, the cutting members 225 and 225' being successively applied to the work. The space between the flaring sides of each cutting member is open at the back above the` supporting posts Iso as to permit free discharge of chips.
While the cutting surface and template-touching surface are preferably formed on the same member to secure accuracy, it will be obvious that they can be formed on separate members.
'Ihe tool may also be used for original work without the template, and can be operated with safety b'y unskilled persons.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A duplicating tool for a lathe, comprising aslidable base having an upstanding portion, a cutting member embracing said upstanding portion and having an upper cutting edge adapted to operate on a work piece, said cutting member and upstanding portion having relatively slidable intertting tongue-and-groove parts at opposite sides for guiding the cutting member in a longitudinal adjustment, and means for clamping said cutting member to the upstanding portion, said cutting member having a template-touching surface for determining the profile of the work piece.
2.. A duplicating tool for a lathe, comprising a slidable base having a post, a cutting member having diverging side walls fitting against said post and having an upper cutting edge adapted to operate on a work piece, a C-shaped clamp having spaced end portions engageable With said diverging walls to draw them against said post, and screw means at an intermediate portion of said clamp for displacing said clamp, said cutting member having a template-touching surface for determining the prole of the work piece.
3. A lathe tool comprising a movable base having a post and a standard, a vertically adjustable cutting member clamped to said post and having an upper cutting edge, and a vertically adjustable guard carried on said standard and having a guard portion spaced a short distance above the cutting edge to limit the depth of cut.
4. In a lathe, the combination, with-a supporting member having a broad and fiat upper surface parallel to the work axis of the lathe, of a base supported on said surface and being slidable and swing'able thereon at will in any desired direction and orientation, and a cutting member carried by said base to operate on a rotatable work piece driven by the lathe.
` 5. In a lathe having a bed, the combination of a plate detachably clamped to the lathe bed and having a broad andflat upper surface parallel to the Work axis of the lathe, a base supported on said surface and being slidable and swingable thereon at .will in any desired direction and orientation, and a cutting member carried by said base to operateon a rotatable work piece driven by the lathe.
6. In a lathe having a bed, the combination of a platel detachably clamped to the lathe bed and having a broad and Jiat upper surface parallel to the work axis of the lathe, a base supported on said surface and being slidable andl swingable thereon at will in any desired direction and orientation, a cutting member carried by said base to operate on a rotatable work piece driven by the lathe, and a template carried by said plate for limiting the advance of the cutting member to the work piece.
