LOCKING DEVICE Filed 0012. 17, 1932 mm 1 BY v ATTORNEYS Patented Feb. 5, 1935 UNlTED srrs 2 Claims.
trunks, bags and other articles.
Another object of my invention is to provide a locking device which may include a key and which can operate without the use of a key.
Other objects of my invention will be set forth in the following description and drawing which illustrate a preferred embodiment thereof, it being understood that the above general statement of the objects of my invention is intended to generally explain the same, without limiting it in any manner.
Fig. l is a perspective view of my device, the locking device being in the inoperative position.
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the device in the closed position.
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, showing how the locking plate has been slid, preparatory to swinging the hinge member of the device to the position which is shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 2 showing the bolt of the lock in its operative position.
Fig. 5 is a sectional view.
As shown in Figs. 1 and 5, the device comprises a hinge plate 1 having an opening 2. The plate 1 is connected to a base plate 3, by means of a suitable hinge 4. The base plate 3 may be connected by members 5 to one part of the receptacle or the like to which the device is to be applied.
A slidable locking plate 6 is mounted upon the hinge plate 1 and said slidable locking plate is provided with channel-shaped ends which act to guide the sliding movement of the locking plate 6 upon the hinge plate 1. The slidable locking plate 6 is also provided with an opening which corresponds generally to the opening 2.
A suitable spring or springs are provided so that the slidable locking plate 6 normally has the position shown in Fig. 1, with the rear end of said slidable locking plate 6 adjacent the lugs of the hinge 4.
As shown in Fig. 5, said spring or springs S may be located adjacent the rear end of the slidable locking plate 6, and the hinge plate 1 is provided with a suitable offset or shoulder against which one end of the spring'or springs S may abut. The outer sliding movement of the locking plate 6 upon the hinge plate 1 may be limited in any suitable manner so that said outer sliding movement is stopped when the opening of said plates 1 and 6 register with each other. In the normal position illustrated in Fig. 1, said openings are out of registration with each other. The hinge plate 1 has an oiiset member 1a which is either integral therewith or which is suitably connected thereto, and the inner end of the slidable locking plate 6 may have a cross-bar which abuts a shoulder which is formed upon said member 1a, when the slidable locking plate 6 is at the limit of its outer movement. This outer position of the slidable locking plate 6 is illustrated in Fig. 3. The locking plate 6 is provided with a hookshaped end So, which can be engaged by the finger of the operator. The lock L is provided with the usual bolt or keeper 7, which is actuated by the key K in any well known manner.
In Fig. 1 the bolt 7 has been shown in its outer position, but it is to be understood that said bolt is retracted within the casing of the look when it is desired to move the hinge plate 1 and its associated slidable plate 6, from the position shown in Fig. 1, to the position shown in Fig. 2. The lock casing is provided with a recess or groove 8. The lock casing is provided with a suitable base which is connected by means of members 9 to the body or other suitable part of the receptacle.
In order to move the device from the position shown in Fig. 1 to the position shown in Fig. 2, the locking plate 6 is slid outwardly and the hinge plate 1 is then moved to the position shown in Fig. 2 and in Fig. 5. The locking plate is then released and it is moved inwardly by the spring or springs S until an edge of the opening in said locking plate enters and engages the groove 8. This latches the two parts of the device together. The openings in the plates 1 and 6 are now out of registration with each other. When the bolt 7 is now moved outwardly, it engages the upper surface of the hinge plate 1, as shown in Fig. 5, so that the two parts of the device are locked to each other.
Upon moving the bolt 7 to its inoperative position, it is possible to outwardly slide the plate 6 and to then turn the plate 6, together with the hinge plate 1, to the inoperative position. In the position shown in Fig. 4 the bolt '7 prevents the sliding movement of the plate 6 relative to the plate 1.
While I have shown the use of relatively fiat plates, the invention is not to be restricted to any particular form of the members 1, 3, etc.
I have shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, but it is clear that numerous changes and omissions can be made without departing from its spirit.
I claim:
1. A locking device comprising a hinge plate, a locking plate slidably mounted upon said hinge plate, spring means located between said hinge plate and said locking plate and adapted to move said locking plate to a predetermined position relative to said hinge plate, said locking plate and said hinge plates having openings which are adapted to be aligned with each other when the locking plate is moved outwardly from said predetermined position, and a second member having a projection which is adapted to project through the openings in said hinge plate and in said locking plate, said projection having a groove which is adapted to be engaged by one of the edges of the opening in said locking plate, said projection having a movable bolt which is adapted to be moved outwardly so as to prevent the sliding movement of said locking plate.
2. A locking device comprising a hinge plate, a locking plate slidably mounted upon said'hinge plate, spring means located between said hinge plate and said locking plate and adapted to move said locking plate to a predetermined position relative to said hinge plate, said locking plate and said hinge plates having openings which are adapted to be aligned with each other when the locking plate is moved outwardly from said predetermined position, and a second member having a projection which is adapted to project through the openings in said-hinge plate and in said locking plate, said projection having a groove which is adapted to be engaged by one of the edges of the opening in said locking plate, said projection having a movable bolt which is adapted to be moved outwardly so as to prevent the sliding movement of said locking plate, said bolt being adapted to overlie a portion of said hinge plate, when said bolt is in its operative position.
