IMPROVEMENT IN ELASTlC-WELTED FELT PACKINIG.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 199,002, dated January 8, 1878; application filed July 7, 1877'. I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatI, ISAAC Sworn, of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in the Manufacture of Elastic-Welted Felt Packing for Glassware or other Goods; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention is an improvement in packing for glass bottles in boxes or .other cases,
- as a substitute for sawdust, bran, rice-hulls,
&c., affording great economyin space and a saving in weight. The welt is quite elastic, and between the welts thin paper or felt answers as to requisite strength.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a bottle having around it an enwrapment of my fabric. Fig. 2 is a section showing av packed box, whereinthe welted fabric is interposed between the bottles. Fig. 3 is an enlarged cross-section of the welted fabric.
The reference-letters indicate corresponding parts.
A shows a box, in which are packed the bottles B. A is my packing fabric as applied to the enwrapment of bottles, (3 being the thickened paper, and c the inserted elastic welts. D is a lining of the fabric interposed between the box and its contents.
In manufacturing my elastic-welted packing fabric, a pasted under sheet receives the elastic strips, distanced apart as suitable, and over all is laid another sheet, which a properly-arranged set of rollers presses together ISAAC SWOPE.
