Description
'Feb. 5, 1935.
F. G PIKE TIRE TOOL Filed Feb. 6, 1954 Invenfor FfdflCZS G- Pike flllorney Patented Feb. 5, 1935 UNITED STATES PATENT OFF-ICE 1 Claim.
Ihis invention relates to a tire tool, the general object of the invention being to provide a device whereby an inner tube of a tire can be easily and quickly deflated and also to provide means for marking a puncture in an inner tube and at the same time permitting air to escape from the tube.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device.
Figure 2 is a top plan view thereof.
Figure 3 is a se ionlorflin f Figure 2.
In this drawing, the numeral 1 indicates a tube having a point 2 at one end thereof and with a number of sets of holes 3 and 4 therein intermediate its ends. A substantially U-shaped member 5 is suitably fastened to the other end of the tube, with said other end of the tube inserted into the space formed by the bight of the U-shaped member and the limbs of the U-shaped member slightly converge and have their. outer portions bent into a flat V-shape, as shown at 6, so that the limbs of the U-shaped member form resilient clamping jaws for engaging the outer end of a valve stem. to hold the device on the stem. A pin 6 passes through the top part of the tube with its head upset in a hole in the bight part of the member 5, as shown at 7 with the pin extending between the jaws andhaving its free end terminating short of the free ends of the limbs of tin: U-shaped member and said free end is form with a recess 8.
device on the tube.
Thus it will be seen that by pressing the limbs of the U-shaped member over a valve stem, the recessed end of the pin will enter the stem and engage the valve rod and thus force the rod inwardly and press the valve off its seat so that the 5 air will escape from the tube and as the jaws 'formed by the limbs of the U-shaped member 5 grip the stem, the device will be held on the stem while the air is escaping from the tube, so that it is not necessary for the attendant to hold the 10 When a tube has been punctured, the pointed end 2 of the tube 1 can be inserted in the puncture past the lower set of holes 3 so that the device will then act to mark the puncture and the air will escape through the tube 15 from the inner tube.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.
' It is to be understood that changes may be 20 made in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, pro- ..vided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed is: Ahdevice of the class described comprising an elongated handle-forming member having one end of circular shape" in cross section, a pin passing transversely through said end, with a short part projecting from aside portion of the handle 30 member and a long part projecting from the opposite side portion, a substantially U-shaped member having a bight fitting around said end of the handle member with the short projecting part of the pin entering the bight and the l imbs 35 of the U-shaped member converging outwardly, the long part of the pin extending into the space between said limbs, said limbs being resilient and having their outer portions of substantially V- shape in cross section. 40
