This invention relates to a method and apparatus for making boxes, and more particularly to an improved method and apparatus for assembling and wrapping paperboard boxes of round, rectangular, polygonal, concave, convex or' an'y other regular or irregular shape or contour. I g
It has heretofore been' consideredimpossible to assemble and wrap boxes which have side walls which are cylindrical, elliptical, concave,-convex, heart-shaped, or f irregular shape and contour automatically on a wrapping machine. No method of assembling such boxes has heretofore been devised which could be'efficiently and effectively executedby machine, and no machine or apparatus for carrying out the same has been devised. Such boxes have heretofore been made only by hand with the aid of simple hand tools. Such boxes have consequently been very expen- 20 sive as compared with'the regular, straight sided,
rectangular boxes wrapped automatically bymachine. V Y
Paperboardboxes heretofore made having upwardly or downwardly extending rims' -have also '7 a been largely hand made. And, while-they are attractive and desirable, they have been used-very little except forexpensive packaging, since the cost of these handmade boxes ha's been prohibitive.
30 Also, irregular shapedboxes having padded tops or bottoms have heretofore been made by hand, which 'has'made them so costly that-they have only been used in limited quantities forthe packaging of expensive articles It is an object of this invention to provide a method of making paperboard boxes of regular or irregular outline, with speed and efficiency and with economy as to materials and labor.
It is another object'of this invention toprovide an apparatus for making paperboard boxes of irregular contour automatically.
Still another object of this invention'is to provide apparatus which may be attached to Wrapping machines in common useandwhich will.
i3 operate in conjunction therewith to wrapboxes of regular or irregular shape and contour wit speed, efficiency and economy- Another objectv of this invention is to provide matically padding and wrapping boxes of irregiular shape and contour.
Another object of this invention is to providean". attachment adapted to be-iapplie'd'to box mak-' ing' and wrapping machines in common use, which. can be easily and quickly connected to such'machines, which operatesin perfect synchronism therewith, which is sturdy, strong and lasting in: construction, substantially foolproof in operation, and which is relatively inexpensive to make" and may be operatedras' fast as the: machine to which itis'attached will operate;
Other objects of this invention will become apparent as the disclosure proceeds.
In accordancewith' this'invention, boxes having side walls of irregular contour, such as cy-" lindricai, elliptical, oval, heart-shaped, polygonal, concave, i'convex, and b'oxeszwith round or irregular shaped. corners may be wrapped quickly, efiiciently,. effectively and economically by .to the operating head of the wrappingmachine'.
If the box to be made'has'a fiat bottom, the vertically reciprocating platform upon whichv the box rests may be provided with: aflat'top' surface. A'wrap'is provided-the outer edge of which is slit so as to provide a plurality of tabs which extend up ove'r'the side walls of the box; when the same 'is'wrapped; The wrapis then glued, the box bottom inserted? into the continuous side wall, and the side wall and bottom is positioned on the wrap sothat the lower edge of the side wall adheres thereto; The'box side wall, with the wrap adhering'thereto, is then telescoped over the pressure block, spring fingersbeing provided which hold the same in place;
When the machine is operated .thepressure block carrying the unassembled box moves down wardly and seats upon the reciprocating plat form, pressing the box bottom intoiplace against the wrap sheet. The platform and-pressure block then move downwardly, and. during this .movement, the outer tab portions'of the wrap come" into contact witha series of brushes, which are: arranged to surround thebox. The brushes wipe the tab portions of the wrap upwardly intocontact with the side walls of the box. When the box to be wrapped has cylindrical, concave, convex, heart-shaped or generally irregular shaped side walls, it ispreferable to arrange the brushes: in inclined position so that: the tab" portibns'rof the wrap are successively and progressively wiped into contact with the side walls of the box. By this arrangement of the brushes, the tab portions of the wrap are arranged so as to overlap one another, and a smooth and finished appearing box results. As the box continues its downward movement, pressure blocks move inwardly to press the tab portions of the wrap firmly against the side portions of the, box, firmly cementing the same together. Thebox is then ejected from the machine and a side wall strip is applied to the box wall, which overlaps the tab portions and folds over the upper edge of the box. By providing flap folding brushes and folding blocks of the proper shape and arrangement, any desired shape of box may be assembled and wrapped. V I
' If a box having a verticallyextending rim portion is desired, the vertically moving platform of the machine is provided with a top surface having araised portion which extends above the rim thereof. The pressure block is provided with a plate mounted thereon which is adapted to overhang and engagethe upper edge of the side wall of the box and telescope: the same over the raised portion of the platform. The wrap then extends over the raised portion of the platform and downwardly around the depressed rimportion thereof so as to providethe container with an inset bottom. The tab portions surrounding the wrap are thenfolded upwardly by the brushes and pressed against the side walls of the box by the .pressure blocks as above described.
In forming. boxes with padded bottoms, the padding is placed on the'glued wrap sheet which is positioned toadhere to the lower-edge of the box side wall. The surface of the vertically moving platform is suitably hollowed ,or concaved to. conform with the desired shape of the padding. 1 Preferably the outer area of the bottom Wallis not padded. This permits the wrap sheet toadhere-directly to the bottom wall of the box around the padded area, and makes a stronger box. This is accomplished by providing the platformwith a raisedrim portion which surrounds the concaved area.
Where the word .box is used in the specification and claims, it is understood that either the containing part and/or the cover part of a container is meant, and the same should be'so construed. i
Although the novel features which are believed tobe characteristic of this invention will be particularly pointed out in the claims appended hereto, the invention itself, as to: its objects and advantages, and the manner in which it may be carried out, may be better understood by referring to .the following description taken in connection with .the accompanying drawings forming a part thereof, in which Fig. 1 is aside elevationalview of a wrapping machine with the box forming apparatus herein disclosed attached thereto, certain parts being shown incross section to more fully illustrate certain features. of the construction;

The blocks are thus moved out of the way, permitting the box to move upward out of the ma' chineafter the wrapping operation. The brush blocks 60 will drop back into horizontal position by gravity when the arms 67 move upward.
The brushes ,60 are adapted to wipe the glued flaps 100 of the box wrap 101 against the side walls 102 of thebox 13 under construction. The upper forming block 40, carrying the box wrap 101, theside walls 102 and the box bottom 103, moves downwardly until it seats against the lower forming block 50. Both the upper block 40- and lower block 50 then move down through the brushes 60 which operate to wipe the glued flaps 100 into adhesive contact against the side walls 102 of the box under construction. This opera- ?tion will be described more in detail hereinafter.

60 the clamping blocks move inwardly and press the flaps 100 of the wrap sheet against the side walls 102 of the box, causing the flaps firmly to adhere to the box wall. The clamping blocks 90 are "of the proper shape to completely surround the box side wall. Any convenient number of clamping blocks may be used. Each clamping block 90 is supported in a seating member 91 which, in turn, is supported by one or more rods 92, horizontally slidable within a bracket 93 projecting downwardly from the slide'72. Each of the cams '74 is provided with a high point lug 94 being effective to press against a button 95 projecting from each clamping block 90, thus forcing the blocks 90 inwardly into clamping engagement with the box side walls. A coil spring 96 may be provided to return the clamping blocks to normal position when the pressure has been removed.
At the conclusion of the wrapping operation, the upper forming block 40 moves upwardly carrying the wrapped box with it. The sleeve 66 is drawn downwardly rocking the'cams '74 and tilting the brushes 60 so as to permit the wrapped box to pass freely therethrough. The stripping fingers 33" then come into play to strip the wrapped box off from the upper forming block 40, permitting the box to drop to resting-position on the lower pressure block 50. The ejector 99- then operates to push the box off the lower pressure block.
The particular construction and assembly of the attachments for wrapping irregularly shaped boxes will nowbe described.
In the formation of boxes having a vertically extending rim portion, a lower platform or pressure block 50 of the general shape shown in Figures 3 to 6, inclusive, is provided. This platform is provided with a raised portion 151 in the center thereof and a recessed rim portion 152 surrounding the raised portion 151. The raised portion 151 is of such form and shape as toreceive the'lower end of the side walls 102 of the box under construction.
' The upper pressure block 40 is provided with a plate member 161 mounted on the top thereof. The plate member has a central aperture 162 cut therein through which the tenon 26 of the plunger 19, which supports the pressure block, extends. The plate 161 is supported on a pair of adjustable screws 163 which extend into the block 40. A plurality of downwardly projecting, spring fingers 164, secured to the plate 161, frictionally engage the side walls 102 and retain the box parts inposition on the upper forming block,
40. The fingers 164 also prevent the side walls from warping out of shape during the box forming operation. The spring fingers 164 may be provided with upturned ends 165 to facilitate engagement with the side wall portions 102 of the box. These fingers may be positioned in any location where the box side wall would normally be inclined to bulge outwardly away from the form block 40.
As the machine operates, the upper forming block 40 descends with the side and bottom walls, and wrap sheet adhering to the bottom edge of the side wall. 'When the bottom edge of the box reaches the lower forming block 50, the plate member 161 engages the top edge of the side wall portion 102 of the box and forces thev bottom edge of the side wall into position within the surrounding recessed rim portion 152 of the lower forming block 50. is also carried down so as to seat closely around the recessed rim, and the center portion of the wrap sheet and the bottom wall 103 of the box arepressed together in adhesive relation between the upper forming block 40 and the raised portion 151 of the lower forming block. Thebox as thus constructed is provided with a vertically extending rim portion, as shown in Figure 13; The vertically extending rim dresses the box up considerably and gives it an attractive appearance.
In wrapping a. cylindrical box or a box having arcua'te side walls, each brush is preferably positioned in inclined relationship to each of the others, as shown more particularly in Figures 5 and 12. It is found that the best results are obtained when approximately three rows of brush bristles '79 placed in staggered relation are used in each brush. 1
In wrapping boxes having arcuate side walls, a series of lateral extending cuts 104 defining tabs around the outer edge of the wrap sheet by slitting the edges of the wrap sheet laterally, as shown in Figure 11. During the wrapping operation, bristles '79 of the inclined brushes 60 successively and progressively pick up the tabs 100 and fold them upwardly into adhesive contact against the side wall 102 of the box. This arrangement permits the tabs 100 to shingle or overlap with respect to one another, as shown in Figure .13. An unusually smooth and finished fold is thus secured;

Themethod of making boxes which includes, providing a wrap sheet, a continuous side wall and a bottom wall, slitting the edges of the wrap sheet to provide-tab portions, inserting the bottom wall into the continuous side wall, securing the main portion of said wrap sheet to the bottom wall and to the inside edge of the side wall so as to provide a box with a vertically extending rim portion, and securing said tab portions to the outside face of the side wall so as to hold the parts together in assembled relationship.
7. The method of making boxes having a vertically extending rim portion which includes, providing a wrap sheet, a continuous side wall and a bottom wall, inserting the bottom wall within the continuous side wall, securing the wrap sheet to the end of the side wall, telescoping said side wall and adhering wrap sheet over a mould, said mould having a raised center portion and a depressed rim portion, and pressing the side wall and bottom wall against said mould so as to cause the wrap sheet to adhere to the bottom wall and inside edge of the side wall of the box.
8. The method of making boxes which includes,
providing a wrap sheet, a continuous side wall and a bottom wall, slitting the edges of said sheet to provide tab portions, inserting the bottom wall within said side wall, gluing the wrap sheet to one end of the side wall, telescoping said side wall and adhering wrap sheet over a mould, said mould having a raised center portion and a depressed rim portion, pressing the side wall and bottom wall against said mould so as to cause the wrap sheet to conform to the shape of the mould and to adhere to the bottom wall and the inside edge of the side wall, and wiping said tab portions against the outside face of the side walls so as to cause them to overlap one another and to adhere to the side wall to hold the box parts in assembled set up relationship. I 9. The method of making boxes which includes, providing a wrap sheet, a continuous side wall and a bottom wall, slitting the edges of said sheet to provide tab portions, inserting the bottom wall within said side wall, gluing the wrap sheet to one edge of the side wall, telescoping said side wall and adhering wrap sheet over a mould, said mould having a raised center portion and a depressed rim portion, pressing the side wall and bottom wall against said mould so as to cause the wrap sheet to conformto the shape of the mould and to adhere to the bottom wall and the inside edge of the side wall, wiping said tab portions against the outside face of the side walls so as to cause them to overlap one another and to adhere to the side wall to hold the box parts in assembled set up relationship, and securing a wrap strip around the side wall in overlapping relation to saidtabs.
10. The method of making padded boxes which includes, providing a wrap sheet, gluing said wrap at selected points to the bottom wall of the box with the padding positioned therebetweemand gluing the edges or thewmp to the side avails "or the box.
11. The method of making irregular shaped boxes with padded end walls which includes, providing a wrap sheet, slitting the edges thereof to which includes, inserting the bottom wall within the side wall, positioning the-padding between said wrap sheet and the bottom wall, and gluing said wrap sheet to the unpadded portions of said bottom wall and to the inside edge of the side wall to hold'the box parts inassembled set up relationship. 1
13. The method of making boxes having a vertically extending rim portion and a padded end which includes, providing a wrap sheet, inserting the bottom Wall within the side wall, positioning the padding between said wrap sheet and the bottom wall, and "gluing the intermediate portions of said wrap sheet to the unpadded edge portion of the bottomwall and to the inside edge of the side Wall, and gluing the edges of said sheet. to the outside face of the side wall to holdthe box parts in assembled set up relationship.
14. An upper form block adapted to be passed interiorly into a box including a side wall portion shaped to engage the inside face of the box side wall, a portion adapted to extend over and engage the box side wallfand means for gripping the box 'toretain the same in position on said form block; 1 I l 15. 16. Apparatus for wrapping boxes having arcuate side walls, including in combination, an upper form block having side wall portions adapted to fit within the box and shaped to conform to the inside surface of the box side walls, a portion adapted to extend over and engage the 'box' side wall and resilient means for gripping the boxside' wall to retain the same in position on said form block.
17. Apparatus for wrapping boxes having arcuate side walls including 'in combination,'an upper form block having side wall portions adapted to 'fit within the box and shaped to conform to the inside surface .of the box side walls, a portion adapted to extend over and engage the box side wall and resilient means adapted to press and hold the box side walls in position against the side wall portions of the form block.
18. Apparatus for wrapping boxes having arcuate side walls, including in combination, an upper form block having side wall portions adapted to fit within the box and shaped to conform to the inside surface of the box side walls, a portion adapted to extend over and engage the box side wall and resilient means arranged'to press and hold the inwardly concave'd'portions of the box side walls against the side wall portions of the'form block.

Apparatus for making boxes having inset end walls, including in combination, an upper form block adapted to be passed interiorly into the box, a lower form block adapted to telescope the end wall of the box into the side Wall thereof, and adjustable means overhanging the top of the box side wall for pressing and holding the box side wall against the lower form block.
22. Apparatus for making boxes having inset end walls, including in combination, an upper form block adapted to be passed interiorly into the box, means for retaining the box in position on said form block, and an adjustable plate member overhanging the top of the box side wall for pressing and holding the box side wall against the lower form block.
23. Apparatus for making boxes having inset end walls, including a lower form block having a raised center portion and a recessed rim portion, said center portion being adapted to telescope the box end wall into the side wall thereof when the side wall is fitted within said recessed rim portion and means overhanging the top edge of the box side wall for retaining the lower edge thereof seated within said recessed rim portion.
24. Apparatus for making boxes having inset end walls, including in combination, an upper form block adapted to be passed interiorly into the box, a lower form block having a raised center portion and a recessed rim portion, said center portion being adapted to telescope the box end wall into the side wall thereof, and adjustable means overhanging the upper form block adapted to press and hold the lower edge of the box side wall within and against said recessed rim portion.

Apparatus for making boxes having inset end walls, including in combination, an upper form block adapted to fit within the box and shaped to conform to the inside surface of the box side walls, means for, retaining the box in position on said form block, and a lower form block having a raised center portion and a r cessed rim portion, said center portion being adapted to telescope the box end wall into the side wall thereof when said form blocks are manipulated.

Apparatus for making boxes having inset end walls, including in combination, an upper form block adapted to fit within the box and shaped to conform to the inside surface of the box side walls, means for retaining the box in position on said form block, a lower form block having a recessed rim portion and a raised center portion, said center portion being adapted to telescope the box end wall into the side wall thereof, and adjustable means overhanging the upper form block adapted to press and hold the lower edge of the box side wall within and against said recessed rim portion when said form blocks are manipulatedf -27. 30. Apparatus for wrapping the arcuate side wall of a box including a wiping member inclined with respect to the lower edge of said side wall, said member being operative to progressively wipe the tab portions of the wrap sheet upwardly against the side wall in overlapping relationship.

Apparatus for wrapping boxes having arcuate side walls including wiping brushes of arcuate shape arranged in inclined relationship with respect to said arcuate side walls, said brushes being operative to progressively wipe tab portions of the wrap sheet upwardly against the side walls in overlapping relationship.

Apparatus for wrapping heart-shaped boxes including in combination, a pair of wiping members of arcuate shape arranged to wipe portions of the wrap against the side walls of the box progressively from the tip of the box to the base end thereof, said members being inclined with respect to the bottom of the box.
33. Apparatus for wrapping boxes having arcuate side walls, including wiping members arranged in inclinedrelationship with respect to said side walls, said members being operative to progressively wipe tab portions of the wrap in overlapping relationship against said side walls, and clamping members shaped to conform to the side walls of the box adapted to move inwardly and firmly press the glued tab portions into adhesive contact with the box side walls.
34. Apparatus for making boxeshaving padded end walls including in combination, a lower form block having a concave top portion shaped to conform to the desired padded contour of the box end wall, and an upper forming blockadapted to press the end wall, the padding and Wrap sheet against the lower forming block to cause said box parts to adhesively adhere to one another.
35. Apparatus for making boxes having padded end walls including in combination, an upper form block shaped to conform to the side wall contour of the box, and a lower form block hav-,
ing a concave top portion shaped to conform to the desired padded contour of the boxand adapted to receive the padding material and wrap sheet thereon, said upper block being adapted to press the box end wall into adhesive engagement with said padding and wrap sheet.
36. Apparatus for making boxes having padded end walls including a lower form block having a concave top portion and a raised outer portion surrounding the concave portion, said concave portion being shaped to conform to the desired padded contour of the box end wall.
37. Apparatus for making boxes having padded end walls including an upper forming block shaped to conform to the side wall contour of the box, and a lower forming block having a concave center portion and a raised outer portion surrounding the concave portion, said concave portion being shaped to conform to the desired padded contour of the box end wall, said blocks being operative to shape the padding on said end wall and to cause the wrap sheet to adhere to the end wall at the unpadded parts thereof.
