L RY FEEDER File d Oct. 2, 1933 i L i 4 n @UOO OQ O U ."9 Ewen/16m Patented Dec. 25, 1934 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE POULTRY FEEDER Clarence Elliott Hcdrick, Newton, Kans- .Application October 2, 1933, Serial No. 691,877 1 Claim. (Cl. 119-61) My invention relates to poultry feeders, and especially to those that are collapsible, and it consists in the construction and arrangements herein described and claimed.
An object of my invention is to provide a covered feed trough embodying one single piece of rectangular, pliable, fibre board, that is so cut and scored that it can be readily formed into a collapsible, covered feed hopper.
A further object of the invention is to provide a feeder in which the feed is easily reached by the fowls, but which will prevent them from scatpoultry feeder indicated in general at A having a rectangular flat bottomed feed container, or a trough 1, with perpendicular side walls 2 ends 3 and a gable roof 4. The said roof is to be hinged to the side walls, by scoring of the fibre. board as shown at 5 in Fig. 4 and thus allows for the free motion of opening and closing of the roof, at the ridge, for the full length of said ridge,
thereby providing a means for filling the feeder.,
' A vertical extension of the fibre board, on each side of the roof, and running parallel and the full length of said roof is provided to form a thin ridge 6 as a means of preventing the chicks from roosting upon the roof ridge. The said vertical extension of the roof at the ridge also is to provide space for printing on both sides of said vertical extension. Both slopes of said gable roof are provided with suitable perforations '7,
therein, which perforations or openings provide ample and suitable means whereby the fowls can obtain their food from within the food trough by thrusting their heads, through the said openings, in the roof, into thefood trough and at the same time providing a means that will prevent the fowls from bodily entering the feeder.
It will be seen that I have provided an inexpensive poultry feeder, that can be' shipped and delivered to customers in a knocked down form, which may be easily and quickly con- 10 structed bysimply folding it together, as is outlined by certain cuts 8 and scores 5 and 9 that are placed upon the fibre board by the manufacturer, and then by clamping the ends, side wall and roof into their proper positions by means of 15 metal staples or metal clips 10.
The construction; described above provides,
as stated, a thin ridge 6, which serves the doublepurpose as a means for holding the folded "feeder together and as a means for preventing 20 the fowls from roosting on the top. The provision of the thin ridge does not'give the fowls suflicient surface upon which to cling, and therefor if any of the fowls jump up onthis ridge they lose balance and immediately jump off. 5
This prevents the feed in the box from being contaminated by droppings from fowl which 1 might otherwise roost on the apex of the roof, unless this sharp ridge were provided.
I claim:
e A poultry feeder comprising a single sheet of pliable material having cuts at the ends thereof and scores and foldable at the scores to form a bottom portion, side walls hinged thereto,
slanting roof portions hinged to the side walls 35 and having feeding .openings, ridge portions hinged to the roof portions, said ridge portions being secured together to form a thin perpendicular ridge, and end portions hingedly connected with said bottom, side and roof portions, and 40 foldable to completely close the ends of the feeder.
