ISCIaimsL- (01. 242- 58) This invention relates in general to web supply mechanism, such as is used for printing machines, and more particularly to improved means for severing adhesive tape or tabs and the like pasted 5 to and temporarily .joining the free end of a replacement roll to the body portion thereof preparatory to making anon-stop joinof a webof a replacement roll to a web running froman expiring web roll.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved device of the general character illustrated in pending applications of Tomlin et al., Serial Nos. 578,270 and 596,508, filed December '1,
, 1931 and March 3, 1932 for Method and means for renewing webs of printing machines, and for Improvements in web supply mechanism, respec-' tively.
It is also an object of the invention to provide improved means for temporarily attaching the free end of a web roll to the body portion thereof preparatory to severing same," of generally im proved construction, whereby the device will be simple, durable and inexpensive inconstruction, as well as convenient, practical, serviceable and efficient in its use.
,With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement ofparts, and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed.
The preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated r in the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary end elevational view of a web roll supporting mechanism to, which the present improved means for securing and severing tabs and the like on the end and an adjacent body portion of a replacement roll, is secured;
Figure 2 is a side elevational view, partly in section,.of one of the devices embodying the invention, illustrating the positions of the device before and after the severing of the adhesive straps which temporarily bind the free end of the replacement roll to the body-portion; certain parts of the adjacent roll supporting mechanism being shown in section and partly in elevation;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary elevational view of the device shown in Figure 2;
Figure 4 is an enlarged plan view of the device as viewed in the direction of the arrow 4: of Figure 3, showing the web end securing tapes operatively secured to the device, and the relative position of associated'adjaoent parts prior to actuation of theknifey Figure 5 is a view similar to Figure 4, showing the knife blade'moved to a position where ithas severed the tapes;
Figurefiis anenlarged fragmentary side elevational view ofthe device showing the parts "5 in the same relative position as in Figure 4; and
Figure 7, is a fragmentary plan view as seen on"th'e" line and asviewed in the, direction of the arrow '7 of. Figure 2.
With more particular referenceto the draw- 10 ings wherein similar characters of reference" indicatejjcorresponding parts inthe several views of the preferred form of the invention, 10 designates a column of a web roll supply mechanism which mayform a part of the support or frame are printing machine, and llgll' a base and girder respectively, between which'the column 10 is arranged. 'A web ,roll supporting member or reel 12 is provided with roll engaging [spindles or cones 13 rotatable relatively. to a fixed support hereinafter described and adapted to engage the cores of a pair of web rolls mounted thereon;
i. e., a fresh or replacement web roll 14 and an exhausting web r011 15, it being understood that as customary the reel 12 may be swung or, rotated 5 about its axis to bring each of the {web rolls 14,
15 in turn into desired positions for feeding, loading, web renewal, etc.
In a manner snmlar to that described in the above-mentioned applications of Tomlin et ,al., .a pair of adhesive tabs or binder straps 16, 17 are provided which serve to confine the free, end of the replacement web roll 14 to the body portion at either side thereof, and, which arearranged in'transverse or crossing relation to each other 5 at the sides of the web roll and in overlapping relation to same,'one of the said straps 16 being pasted to ajdiagonally or helically 's'tretchingpornon" of the free end of the replacement web roll, while the other strap 1'7 is pasted on the body 40 portion of the last mentioned web roll and passed under or, over the'strap 16. v Novel means for engaging the binder straps 16, Hand severing same at a predetermined'time are provided, the said means including a pair of similar members or strap anchors 18, which are freely rotatable on the pa'irof cones or spindles 13 supporting the replacement web roll 14 :at either end. 'Thedetails of the member 18 are fully described in the above-referred Tomlin an. application, Serial No. 596,508, and form no part of the present mechanism.
In accordance with the ram invention, each i of the said strap members 18' includes an annular member19 which'is fastened'byscrews 21 to a fixed support alluded to above.
ratchet plate 22, the annular member 19 being formed of two semi-circular sections 23, 24 joined by screws 25, and providing, when joined together,
a pair of holes 26 spaced 180 apart, only one of which is shown, in which studs or trunnions 27 formed on a collar or ring 28 are inserted. The studs 27 permit the swinging or rocking of the strap anchors in a plane transverse to that of the axis of the replacement roll 14, for a purpose which will appear hereinafter. The annular member 19 encircles the collar .28 which rotates about the axis of the adjacent cone 13 and is secured to. an inner ring 29 arranged on the cone 13 and engaged against a second ring 31-fastened to a retainer ring 32. A bearing 33 is arranged on a reduced portion of the fixed support alluded to above and hereinafter described, between two washers 34, 35 and the rings 29,32, the ring 29 being provided with an annular groove 36 on its inner surface, the said groove receiving packing or other lubricant retaining material 37. The ring 29 is also provided with a pocket 38, accommodating an inner end or portion of a spring 39, the outer end of which is received in a coacting pocket 41 formed in the lateral surface of the annularmember. 1-9, it being understood that the annular member 19 and the ring 29 rotate in unison. The elements 31-35 inclusive are-fencircled by casing 42 which is fastened to a bracket 43 fixed to a non-rotatable shaft 44 which is the The strap anchors 18 and associated parts including the elements 2832, it is understood rotate in unison relatively to the fixed support as the replacement roll rotates, preparatory to joining the web of the latter to the web of the expiring roll until the flying paster is accomplished, after which the said strap anchors and their component parts are freed from the end of the web of the replacement web roll by the severing of the binder straps 16, 17, as hereinafter described, and brought to a stop.
By further inspection of Figure 2, it will be seen that a recess 45 is formed in the inner lateral face of the element 42. The said recess 45 is adapted to receive a lug or tongue 46 fastened to the ratchet arm 22 when the latter and consequently the strap binder anchor head indicated generally at 47, to which it is attached and having the binder strap engaging elements 48 thereon, is tilted by the action of spring 39. This tilting of the anchor head 47 occurs when the binder straps are severed by the knife 49 of the said anchor head, thus'freeing or releasing the latter from the replacement web roll 14, at the moment when the free end of the web of the replacement web roll is joined to the traveling web of the expiring roll. As the now released and spring biased ratchet plate 22 to which the anchor head 47 is fastened, swings past the recess 45, the tongue 46 will enter the said recess 45 and thereby. lock the ratchet plate 22 and associated parts including the anchor head 47 to the fixed member or shaft 44, consequently allowing the web of the replacement web roll to feed unimpeded to the printing machine.
The operation of the device may now be summarized as follows:
In accordance with the above-referred to applications of Tomlin et al, Nos. 578,270 and 596,508, a pair of the binder tapes or straps 16, 17, having their outer surface smeared with an adhesive, are attached or pasted to the free end of the web of the replacement roll and the body portion at each side thereof and are secured to one of the web binder anchors or heads 47 after being passed through the slot 51 provided in the latter, thus anchoring the said straps operatively to the replacement roll 14in the position best shown in Figure 2, it being understood that two web binderanchors 47, one at each end of the replacement web roll 14 for an adjacent pair of binder straps, are provided.
It will now be understood when the replacement web roll 14 is rotated by an endless belt assemblysecured to the frame 10 and indicated generally at 52, the binder straps 16, 17, fastened to the free end of the said replacement roll and to the binder arms, will serve to rotatethe latter with the roll. At a predetermined time, after the peripheral speed of the replacement roll which has been swung previously to the position shown in Figure 1, is equal to that of the traveling web of the expiring roll 15, a brush arm or web deflector 53, described in application No. 578,270 above referred to, is swung against the traveling web of the latter, thereby thrusting same against the adhesive smeared outer surface of the 'helically positioned straps which are pasted on their inner surface to the free end of the replacement roll. The projecting trigger 54 on the strap anchoring member 47, which is operatively connected to the knife 49, will now strike against an abutting lower surface of the web defiector 53, thereby actuating or swinging the said knife 49 through the slot 51 thus severing the binder straps 16, 17 and consequently, permitting the web binder anchors 47, as described above, to be tilted or angled by the spring 39 about the lugs o-r trunnions 27 to the position shown in dotted lines in Figure 2. In this last. mentioned position the-lug 46 on the anchor head of the now free end and still swinging strap anchor 18 will enter the recess 45, thereby locking the said strap anchor to the'fixed member 42. The previous'engagement of the two webs will have operatively spliced the web of the expiring roll to that of the replacement'roll so that the latter may serve as a continuation of the former and more quiet operation, longer life and the quick stopping of the freed strap anchors which hitherto were prone to swing and oscillate for sometime after the severing of the binder straps.
It will be understood that the invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the spirit or essential attributes thereof, and it is therefore desired that the present embodiment be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive, reference be ing had to the appended claims rather than to the foregoing description to indicate the scope of the invention.
